Choosing the perfect down jacket for your wardrobe is not that easy. In fact, nothing is simple when it comes to women's clothing. Here's what you need to consider to avoid fashion faux pas.
Regarding the material, we speak first of all of the padding of the down jacket. It can be either natural down or synthetic down. Both have advantages and disadvantages that must be weighed for a good choice. Natural down has a better thermal insulation, in addition to being compressible and very durable. The cheaper synthetic down also keeps you warm, but is not as durable as natural. The outer fabric of the down jacket also counts. It must be strong enough not to tear and let the stuffing out. On the finishing side, it's always nice to have nice details like snaps, pockets, a hood adorned with faux fur... As practical as it is stylish!
The
thicker the padding, the greater the thermal insulation capacity and the down jacket keeps warmer. So puffier down jackets are better, especially if you plan to go skiing. For even more warmth, the linings should also be thick, such as with fleece, quilted, or even faux fur.
You should never choose a down jacket that is too short, nor too long. If it is short, the maximum should be just below the hip bone. If it is long, it should not exceed mid-thigh, at the risk of looking like a walking sleeping bag ... Ideally, choose a length that will keep you warm, without leaving aside the aesthetics.
It
would be better to opt for those sober colors synonymous with elegance, such as navy blue, gray, beige ... The gaudy colors are to be avoided at all costs, because they will require you more requirement on the choice of clothing. Black is also not too flattering, because it looks like a garbage bag even if it keeps you warm. Regarding the effects, the shiny down jacket is not too recommended, unless you know how to wear it well. It is better to bet on a matte effect that will bring a chic side to the down jacket.
In order for your down jacket to last as long as possible, it is important to take good care of it, taking into account these few points.
As dust and perspiration can reduce the water-repellent properties of your down jacket, it is necessary to wash it well. However, you should not wash it too regularly, as this would also reduce its insulating properties. To remove small stains on a daily basis, rubbing with a simple soapy washcloth will do the trick. But it is at the end of each winter that the big cleaning comes into play. To be on the safe side, follow the washing instructions on the label carefully.
To wring out your down jacket, you mustn't twist it, because it could collapse and become ugly or no longer keep you warm. Press it flat between two towels or between your hands and that's it.
Once again, refer to the drying instructions on the label. Never dry your down jacket next to a heat source like a radiator or hair dryer. Lay it out on clotheslines in the sun, or on a hanger if you don't have one. And make sure it's completely dry before putting it away.
An important point after washing. Tap and shake your down jacket to distribute the drying down evenly. This way, once it is completely dry, your down jacket will regain its original loft.
As the fabric of a down jacket is quite difficult to sew, the only solution is to glue the lips of the tear. For this, you can use iron-on powder. We apply it on the tear, then we place a fabric similar to that of the down jacket on it. Finally, you iron it, on an intermediate cloth of course, and it's done. You can also use the adhesive duck tape. We introduce it under the tear and we stick by closing the lips of the tear above.
The short down jacket is adapted to all morphologies, but the long down jacket is less so. Depending on the morphology, some details must be considered to wear it correctly.
The down jacket for women comes in different forms, each with its own advantages. We present the main types of down jackets for women.
A great winter classic, the long-sleeved down jacket is the quintessential down jacket. Simple or quilted, long or short, everyone has owned a long-sleeved down jacket at least once in their life. It is the ideal down jacket to go out when the cold is in full swing thanks to its great insulating capacity.
During its
recent rise, the sleeveless down jacket can just as easily offer an ultra trendy look as a relatively old-fashioned style. It's easy to fall into a fashion faux pas when wearing it, so care must be taken when choosing this type of down jacket. However, the sleeveless down jacket has the great advantage of keeping warm in mid-season or in a poorly heated interior. It can also be worn in addition to a warm outfit and offers greater freedom of movement, by the absence of sleeves.
The
hooded down jacket is a variation of the long sleeve down jacket and the sleeveless down jacket. It is a better option because it also protects the head and ears from the cold, especially when it snows. On the other hand, the hood adds style to the down jacket. It can be adorned with real or fake fur for more elegance. There are some down jackets with removable hoods. Depending on the weather, you can put it on or take it off the down jacket as you please.
To spend the winter warm or go hiking at high altitude, we have two alternatives: wear a down jacket or a fleece jacket. But which one should we choose to protect ourselves from the cold? Which one is lighter and more practical?
A quilted down jacket provides excellent thermal insulation, no matter what the weather. With a down jacket, you can choose between natural down padding, which is warmer but harder to dry when wet, and synthetic polyester fibre padding, which is thinner but much less insulating than a down jacket. The down jacket also has the advantage of being much more compressible and therefore easier to carry. Even if it is not as aesthetic as a fleece, it is a very warm outdoor garment and essential for the coldest of people.
This type of jacket is sewn from insulating synthetic textiles such as PET. Fleece is very soft and breathable. Its properties are reminiscent of wool, but fleece jackets are much lighter. Moreover, they have the advantage of drying faster and being environmentally friendly (most fleece jackets are made from recycled PET). However, it tends to accumulate static electricity, which is not very practical when you live with pets for example... Moreover, the fleece jacket is not warmer than the down jacket. Compared to the latter, it is more bulky if you have to carry it in a bag because it is not very compressible! Nevertheless, it is a very affordable warm garment whose comforting softness is appreciated.
If you are looking for comfort, we recommend fleece. It's more breathable and softer. However, if you really need to stay warm, don't go without a down jacket. Although it is more difficult to maintain than a fleece jacket, a down jacket will insulate you from the cold effectively and it doesn't take up much space.
The right shoes
If your down jacket is colored or printed, choose neutral colored shoes to match your outfit. Boots and booties pair with the down jacket for a totally warm look. You can also wear derbies or low top sneakers for a more fashionable look. At your parties, look elegant with pumps or heeled booties.
A dress under the down jacket
Yes, it is indeed possible. The down jacket for women is able to twist your outfits to make them a little more original. And with oversized down jackets, it's even better! Flowery dress, short dress, long dress, everything goes with maxi down jackets, but choose your colors well.
Staying feminine in a down jacket
To
stay feminine, wear your down jacket with a stylish piece. Court shoes, heeled boots, dresses, so many combinations to feminize your look. And don't forget the chic accessories: jewelry, clutches, handbags...
How to wear oversize
These
last years, the oversize is the star of the catwalks. Oversized down jacket with mini-dress or mini-skirt and leather boots, chic and nice! The casual look with skinny jeans and a pair of sneakers is also very trendy.
The shiny down jacket to stay chic
You
have to be careful with the shiny down jacket to avoid a fashion mistake. But well worn, it twists your classy and chic outfits for a sportswear look for example. It also goes great with slim pants and black lace-up boots.
The heavy down jacket will be the centerpiece of your look. So, always opt for a chic and light outfit on the inside and accessorize it with stylish pieces.
During the fall, you can opt for a thin down jacket over a blouse and jeans, or a light dress. You can pair it with sneakers.
Ideally, choose a down jacket with a hood for more protection against the cold. But the hoodless is also an opportunity to get out your best hats.
Of course it is! Wear your down jacket with a dress and heeled boots, and you're done. For example, choose flashy, shiny or silver models.
