How to choose your curved PC screen

Display quality is not everything, as ultra-wide screens often have a high performance level. There are also other criteria to consider when choosing.

#1 - Screen resolution

Curved PC monitors come in different resolutions. The lowest are 2560 x 1080. Then there are resolutions of 3440 x 1440, 2840 x 1600 and 3840 x 2160 for 4k viewing. For 5k displays, you'll get a resolution of 5120 x 1440. The resolution determines the use cases of a curved screen. The higher it is, the better it will perform for application developers, for image editing or video editing. Movie and series fans will also want to have 4k capability.

#2 - Display technology

There aredifferent display technologies. TN technology is the most common. It offers very low response time and high brightness. However, it has reduced viewing angles. TN technology is most suitable for screens smaller than 34 inches. IPS or In-Plane Switching technology has a higher response time and displays more vivid colors. It is particularly suitable for image processing, video and office automation. However, many gamers prefer this display technology for its versatility. VA or Vertical Alignment technology combines the best of TN and IPS. It brings out exceptional contrasts. It also shines with viewing angles and color reproduction that are second to none to IPS slabs.

#3 - Screen size

When it comes to curved PC monitors, the most common size offered is 34 inches. For the uninitiated, this corresponds to 86 cm diagonally. The smallest ultra-wide screens are 24 inches. They are also the cheapest on the market. The larger the screen, the more space you need to accommodate it. The larger the screen, the greater the problem of stability! The biggest ones measure about 49 inches, which corresponds to a diagonal of 124 cm! If you want to accommodate a screen of this size, you will need to consider the dimensions of your desk.

The 21:9 format

The ultrawide screen appeared on the other side of the Atlantic at the request of gamers. This is why most video games support the 21:9 format natively. At equivalent sizes, a 21:9 ultrawide PC screen will offer a 30% wider display than a 16:9 screen. This means you'll have a larger field of view during gaming sessions or screen sharing. A 21:9 format also makes the pillarbox effect disappear. These are the little black bands that appear at the top and bottom of the screen when you watch a movie. You'll get a full immersion experience, very similar to a movie theater.

#4 - Refresh rate

The

frequency at which a monitor refreshes the image displayed on the screen is called the refresh rate. The higher it is, the smoother the images and the better the response time. Curved PC monitors have a refresh rate of 60 to 200 Hz. For gaming PC displays, you'll typically get 100 to 120 Hz.

#5 - G-Sync or FreeSync compatibility

AMD and Nvidia have developed FreeSync and G-Sync technologies, respectively. They allow to automatically adapt the refresh rate to that of the graphics processor. This aims to avoid jerky and torn images, stuttering and tearing in English. However, Nvidia's technology poses a small problem in terms of use. You need a graphics card with an Nvidia processor to take advantage of G-Sync. On the other hand, you can use FreeSync with an AMD card as well as an Nvidia card.

#6 - Connections and extras

Curved PC monitors come with many connectors. Among the most common are USB ports, Jack ports, DP or Display Port and HDMI ports. In the early 2010s, we see the arrival of 3D screens. But manufacturers have gradually abandoned them. Some models have built-in speakers. Let's say it right away, the sound is rarely of good quality. That's why the sound was not chosen as a criterion. Using PC speakers solves the problem. There are also curved PC monitors with memory card readers, so you can display photos directly on the screen. And if you want to turn your ultra-wide PC monitor into a curved TV, choose a model with a built-in TV tuner.

When to use a curved and ultrawide PC monitor?

Whether it is flat or curved, the ultrawide PC screen is intended for 2 areas of use.

Multimedia

Having an ultrawide screen is a must for gamers, designers and graphic artists. Application and game developers also find it useful. Indeed, they have to read many lines of code. You can also use it for music and videos, as the ultrawide screen allows you to display more timeline.

Office and multitasking

For intensive office work and multitasking, the ultrawide display offers the same capabilities as a dual-screen workstation. For example, it allows you to work on large spreadsheets with a large number of columns. Plus, you won't have to worry about the many cables and connections of dual monitor systems.

The different types of curved and ultra-curved PC monitors

Depending on the shape, there are flat and curved ultrawide screens. For your information, classifying ultrawide PC screens by size would be meaningless.

Curved screen

This is the most popular type of ultrawide screen. Visually, it is also more elegant. The curved screen offers an immersive experience that is popular with gamers and moviegoers. It's a treat to play first-person shooters or FPS games on this type of screen.

When you look at a standard computer screen, the edges are farther away than the center. This difference is accentuated with ultrawide screens because of their width. The curved shape corrects this problem while enhancing that sense of immersion.

Flat screen

Unlike the curved screen, the ultrawide flat PC monitor is ideal for doing graphics and writing lines of code. This is because a flat screen helps designers' images stay pure, instead of distorting as 2D images do with a curved screen.

An ultrawide flat screen is easier to orientate. And it requires fewer resources from your GPU. The field of view is still ultra-wide, of course. But videos and game images won't be as immersive as with a curved screen.

If you're looking for an ultra-wide screen for business purposes, a flat screen will give you better performance than a curved one.

Which one to choose?

Aside from recreational and professional considerations, it's impossible to say which type of screen is better. It all depends on your design preferences, budget and use cases. For some, curved screens cause more problems than they solve. For others, it's as big an innovation as the HD screen.

LED or Oled?

LED

Here, a distinction must be made between the display technology, colour filters (TN or IPS), and the backlight system. These are two components of the panel and influence the image quality. So, the LED backlighting system is more efficient since LED lights illuminate the liquid crystals instead of neon tubes like on LCDs.

Based on the LCD panel, the LED technology consumes less energy, while offering better image quality and it allows the manufacturer to increase the size of the screen.

Oled

Although the LED dominates the market with an exceptional quality/price ratio, the Oled technology starts to take more and more place. It's all about the Organic Light-Emitting Diode. No more backlighting unit filter with crystals, the Oled uses an organic material, on each diode, which lights up when electricity passes over it.

This technology allows a better level of contrast with an improved viewing angle. But above all, the Oled screen is thinner, because there are less filters.

Verdict

For really sharp work or for those who can afford it, Oled technology is perfect. It offers sharpness, maximum contrast, and image quality unmatched by LED or LCD.

On the other hand, for office automation or games, we recommend the use of this excellent old-fashioned LED. It will not be forgotten, as long as the price of the new technology does not drop.

Ultrawide or multi-screen?

Economically speaking, multi-screen is more interesting than ultrawide. And this solution offers more pixels in width. On the other hand, the ultrawide screen limits the clutter on your desk and the tangle of wires. It's more aesthetically pleasing, and it's also more productive.

Why choose a curved and ultrawide PC monitor?

No image distortion

With an ultrawide curved PC screen, the system automatically adjusts the image to the angle for better viewing. In addition, the light is focused directly towards the viewer, unlike a flat screen where it is projected in a straight line. So you can see all the images in front of you without missing anything. It is also an excellent alternative to preserve your eyes and stay healthy.

A great immersive experience

Thanks to its sloping edges, an ultrawide curved screen offers a wide peripheral view. It gives a 3D-like feel to the images being displayed that may make you forget everything around you. You'll feel totally immersed in the video games you play or the movies you watch. This makes for a comfortable viewing experience that is also very convenient for gaming.

Wider field of view

The curvature of this type of screen also gives you a wider field of view. You will be able to watch all the scenes being broadcast in optimal conditions without having to move your head and neck. With a wider field of view, you will also have better visibility. You will be able to detect enemies faster and react quicker during your video game sessions, unlike conventional screens.

More screen space

An ultra-wide curved PC screen means more work space. This is very handy if you need to open multiple windows and work with multiple documents at the same time. Multitasking becomes easier.

Modern look

In order to meet the design desires of users, the curved ultrawide PC monitors are available in various shades, colors and textures.Their curved design brings an aesthetic and modern touch to your office. The curved design adds a modern and aesthetic touch to your desktop and will match any interior design.

The best brands of curved and ultra-curved PC monitors

In our opinion, the best brands of curved and ultra-curved PC monitors in 2022 are :

Asus
Samsung
HP
Benq
LG

Founded in 1989, Asus is a Taiwanese brand. It is the world's number 4 computer manufacturer behind Lenovo, HP, Dell and Acer. We like Asus products for their robustness, their performance and their longevity.

The Samsung conglomerate is one of the largest companies in South Korea. Founded in 1938, the firm is best known for its electronics division. Its TVs, tablets, computers, SSDs and smartphones are among the best in the world.

Everyone knows Hewlett-Packard or HP printers. The American brand was number 1 in the world of computing before being dethroned by Lenovo. Its production of PC screens, especially the ultrawide, is oriented towards the middle and top of the range.

We no longer need to introduce this brand, which is a real safe bet. Originally from Taiwan, Benq is world famous for its video projectors. However, the brand also excels in computer screens, as shown by its ultra-wide models.

A subsidiary of LG Group, a South Korean multinational founded in 1947, LG Electronics or simply LG is a consumer electronics brand. It manufactures smartphones and household appliances. Its TV or PC screens often offer the best quality/price ratio.

Tips

Cleaning

To get the best picture quality, your screen must be clean. First, dust it with a dry cloth. Then, to remove fingerprints and smudges, take a damp cloth and gently rub your screen without scratching it. Finally, dry it with a dry cloth. Above all, don't forget to turn off and unplug the device before any cleaning work.

Install it properly

As you know, an ultrawide screen is almost three times wider than a simple PC screen. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the space that will accommodate it well, so that it does not collide with other objects. Also, note that for optimal visual comfort, the screen of your computer should be placed between 40 and 70 cm from your eyes.

Think about protecting your eyes

When you spend a lot of time in front of the computer, the blue light may harm your eyes. To remedy this, consider installing a blue light filter on your screen. You can also opt to wear blue light blocking glasses. But there is also software that can eliminate blue light by modifying the color settings of your screen.

Cover your screen with a protective cover

Your computer screen sits on a table all the time, exposed to all the outside agents. To better protect it against dirt and scratches, make sure you cover it with a cover every time you don't use it. Do the same for your keyboard.

Position the speakers in relation to your screen

To enjoy the best movie or gaming session, your speakers should be well placed. To do that, put them in an elevated spot at the same height as your ears. Also, make sure they're angled 60 degrees toward your seat for both auditory and visual comfort.
