The best 240 Hz PC monitors in the UK 2023

Display technology has changed a lot in recent years. Until now, the main focus was on screen resolution. Now, improvements are being made in other areas, such as response time and especially refresh rate. PC monitors often used 60 Hz panels. Now we see PC monitors with refresh rates that reach 240 Hz. But which model to choose and for which use? To help you make the right choice, read this guide to the best 240 Hz PC monitors.

Alienware AW2720HF 1

Best value for money

Alienware AW2720HF

The best 240Hz PC display in 2021

The Alienware AW2720HF 240Hz PC monitor will be perfect for most uses. Its 27-inch panel is suitable for gaming, multimedia and production. However, its Full HD resolution of 1080p may seem too low for some.

375 £ on Amazon

The Dell Alienware AW2720HF claims impressive gaming performance and a stylish design. It features an IPS panel to ensure smooth gaming. It supports native Free-Sync and G-Sync to reduce screen tearing and motion blur. Unfortunately, its below-average contrast ratio and terrible black uniformity aren't ideal for dark rooms, and the lack of HDR support is a bit of a shame. Overall, this 240Hz PC monitor will appeal to gamers who value motion management over a detailed high-resolution image.

LG UltraGear 27GN750-B 2
7/10

Best value for money

LG UltraGear 27GN750-B

The best entry-level 240Hz PC display

The LG UltraGear 27GN750-B is a versatile 240Hz PC display that will appeal to gamers in particular. They will appreciate the support for FreeSync VRR. Unfortunately, despite HDR10 compatibility, it cannot display a wide range of colors.

255 £ on Amazon

The 27GN750-B is part of LG's UltraGear line. It has a 1080p IPS panel with native FreeSync support. It is also certified by NVIDIA for G-Sync compatibility. Motion looks exceptionally clear on this display due to its exceptional response time at both 240 Hz and 60 Hz. Input lag is extremely low, so your actions happen almost instantly when you're gaming. With its IPS panel, the LG UltraGear 27GN750-B has wide viewing angles, making it easy to share your screen with colleagues or friends. On the other hand, we regret that the contrast ratio is a bit low, so this 240 Hz PC screen is not an ideal choice for viewing in a dark room.

Samsung ODYSSEY G7 3
9/10

Best value for money

Samsung ODYSSEY G7

The best high-end 240Hz PC display

The Samsung Odyssey G7 is a fantastic 240Hz PC display with a curved shape. If you're looking for a panel with 1440p QHD resolution, this is a must. You'll get incredible speed and resolution packed into a stylish design.

599 £ on Boulanger

The Samsung ODYSSEY G7 excels in all areas! Its unique size and shape make it perfect for video games and everyday tasks. Samsung offers a display with incredible gaming performance. Here we find a 32-inch curved VA panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and a 1000R curve curvature. It supports FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) technology and is certified by NVIDIA as G-Sync compatible. Its image quality is very good as it has an excellent contrast ratio and good color accuracy. Unfortunately, the viewing angles are rather narrow because of the VA panel, so you quickly lose image accuracy when viewing from the side.

Samsung C27RG50FQU 4
8/10

A great choice

Samsung C27RG50FQU

Excellent 240Hz PC display

The Samsung C27RG50FQU is a rarity running at 240 Hz with a VA panel. Added to that is superb contrast, G-Sync compatibility, accurate colors and top-notch gameplay. It has everything gamers could hope for.

255 £ on Amazon

The Samsung C27RG50FQU boasts of being the very first 240Hz PC monitor with a curved panel. This model takes advantage of its 27-inch VA panel with a resolution of 1080p. We can clearly see that it displays richer colors and deeper blacks than screens with TN panels. The viewing angles are also much better on the Samsung C27RG50FQU. It has an impressive contrast ratio of 3000:1, which is great for games that make intensive use of shadows and dark scenes. The trade-off for this improved image is a slow VRR response time of 4 ms, which makes it more susceptible to ghosting compared to the rich 240 Hz TN PC displays in this selection.

How to choose your 240 Hz PC monitor

Even though 240 Hz PC monitors are still niche products, choosing the best model is not easy. It's tempting to buy any 240 Hz PC monitor and play immediately. But knowing what to look for before you buy can help you get the most out of your investment. Here are the criteria to consider when buying a 240 Hz PC monitor.

#1 - The type of panel

If you plan to play fast, competitive games, a 240 Hz monitor with a TN panel is the best choice. TN panels can achieve higher refresh rates and faster response times. Plus, they don't cost too much. The best 240 Hz TN PC monitors can achieve incredibly fast response times of up to 0.5 ms. However, TN panels don't have the best viewing angles and don't reproduce colors excellently. If you want responsive gameplay with sharper visuals, a 240 Hz monitor with an IPS panel will do the trick.

In the middle of the two are VA panels. They offer the best balance between responsiveness and visual quality. Of course, you won't get the best of both. The best thing about VA panels is that they have the best contrast ratio, so if you're buying a 240 Hz PC monitor primarily for playing HDR games, your choice should be VA panels.

#2 - The response time

Responsetime is important in games. If you play fast-paced games, especially competitive FPS, a slight lag can set you back. Fast response time makes fast-moving scenes and objects clearer, allowing you to react quickly. Slow response time causes ghosting and smearing around fast-moving objects.

So if you're playing FPS or Battle Royale games and your enemy is constantly moving, it can be difficult to aim well. TN panels have the best response times you can get on the market. Some 240 Hz PC monitors feature blur reduction technology to further reduce ghosting and motion blur.

#3 - The variable refresh rate (VRR)

Ahigh refresh rate isn't enough if you're looking for a smooth gaming experience. You need a high variable refresh rate (VRR). VRR reduces screen tearing during gameplay by synchronizing the graphics card refresh rate with the PC monitor refresh rate, providing a smooth gaming experience.

240Hz PC monitors can support VRR via FreeSync or G-Sync. FreeSync unlocks VRR on AMD graphics cards and compatible gaming consoles, while G-Sync works on NVIDIA graphics cards. Some monitors support both VRR technologies to maintain compatibility on larger gaming PCs.

#4 - The resolution

Most 240 Hz PC monitors have FullHD (1920 × 1080p) resolution, best for competitive gaming, especially if you're building a low-budget gaming PC setup. Affordable graphics cards such as the GTX 1660 Super can comfortably handle 240 frames per second at 1080p on most competitive games such as. Counter Strike:Global Offensive.

We do not recommend any resolution lower than 1080p for the best gaming experience. Please note that you will need at least one DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 2.0 output on your PC to drive a FullHD PC display at 240Hz. If you want both speed and sharper visuals, you can opt for a 1440p (QHD) 240Hz PC monitor.

240 Hz QHD PC monitors are a bit more expensive than 1080p models, but it's the most ideal resolution for competitive gaming. Note, however, that there aren't many 240Hz PC monitors with 1440p resolution on the market. Also, you'll need a DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 connection to run 1440p at 240Hz.

#5 - The screen size

Choosing the right size depends on what you're looking for between a larger image or sharper picture quality. Since most 240 Hz PC monitors have a resolution of 1080p, you'll get the best image quality on a smaller 240 Hz PC monitor, such as a 25-inch or 27-inch display.

Some gamers prefer a larger image, and you can definitely hear that. You can always buy a 30- or 32-inch 240 Hz PC monitor with 1080p resolution. This won't be a problem for games, especially for competitive titles like Fortnite. What matters in these games is the refresh rate, not the screen size.

Curved or flat 240Hz PC monitor

Curved 240Hz PC monitors add immersion to your gaming experience because they fill your field of view more than a flat 240Hz PC monitor. They can help reduce distractions such as repetitive head movements and keep you glued to the game. To fully appreciate the immersion that comes with a curved screen, you need a large monitor, preferably 27 inches or larger. Smaller 240Hz PC monitors of 24 inches or 25 inches are better flat than curved.

What connectors for a 240 Hz PC monitor?

When looking for a 240 Hz PC monitor, you should have a PC with at least one connector capable of handling up to 240 frames per second. For a 240 Hz 1080p PC monitor, you need at least one HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2 output port. Increasing the resolution to 1440p requires DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 connectivity, because on a 1440p display, HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 can't handle a refresh rate beyond 144 Hz.

On the other hand, it's good to have additional ports on your display. Having additional USB-A ports can help you connect your USB peripherals and expand the functionality of your system, especially if you're using a laptop. A headphone jack is another port to keep an eye out for if the display doesn't have built-in speakers.

The different types of 240 Hz PC monitors

When you choose a 240 Hz PC monitor, you will encounter different types of panels. These panels represent the image and are therefore the central part of your screen. Here we will explain the differences between the 3 most common panel types for 240 Hz PC monitors: TN, IPS and VA.

240 Hz IPS PC Display

IPS panels have the widest color gamut. This means that these displays represent the graphics in your games in the most realistic way. An IPS screen ties this to wide viewing angles, so you can also see sharp images if you're not right in front of your gaming monitor. For example, if you're playing with multiple people at the same time.

240 Hz TN PC Display

Gaming monitors with a TN panel have worse color representation than other monitors. Compared to, for example, an IPS screen, the colors look a bit duller. This is why there are no 240 Hz TN PC monitors with DisplayHDR. The viewing angle is also smaller than with other types of gaming panels. You usually choose a TN screen for its other features.

240 Hz VA PC Display

AVA screen is the middle ground between IPS and TN. The color gamut is close to an IPS panel, and the viewing angle is slightly smaller than an IPS display, but larger than a TN display. The 240 Hz VA PC displays excel especially in terms of contrast ratio. The difference between light and dark is very visible on this type of screen.

240 Hz PC monitor or 144 Hz PC monitor?

240 Hz PC monitor

If you currently use a gamer PC and play competitive games online, a PC monitor that runs at 240 Hz could be a great upgrade, especially to improve your accuracy and responsiveness. 240 Hz PC monitors aren't cheap and still don't have all the added benefits we see with 144 Hz PC monitors.

If you can't hit 240 frames per second with your favorite games, you won't be able to take full advantage of all the benefits of a 240 Hz PC monitor and should instead look to a 144 Hz model, as some can be overclocked to 165 Hz.

144 Hz PC monitor

For 144 Hz PC monitors, a new image is produced approximately every 7 ms. This is the main reason why images appear much smoother compared to lower refresh rates, 60 Hz for example.

The difference between 144Hz and 240Hz is certainly less noticeable unless you slow down the images, but there is sufficient evidence to support the fact that a higher refresh rate gives you the most responsiveness. A 144Hz refresh rate could be considered the modern benchmark for competitive gamers, with a wide variety of options, even at the entry level.

Verdict

Competitive gamers have everything to gain with both 144 Hz and 240 Hz PC monitors. For casual gamers, the difference in smoothness between a 144 Hz and 240 Hz PC monitor will be virtually unnoticeable. On the other hand, for hardcore or professional gamers, this difference can play a key role in e-Sports games, especially FPS titles such as Counter Stike: GO, Valorant, Overwatch, Battlefield, Fortnite and PUBG.

If you decide to go with a 240 Hz PC monitor, just make sure your PC's graphics card is actually capable of supporting that refresh rate. With a 144 Hz PC monitor, you could be saving big. It offers a more than decent gaming experience and similar response times to a 240 Hz monitor for much less money.

Why buy a 240 Hz PC monitor?

To have a consistent advantage in competitive games

In competitive games, response time and refresh rate have a significant impact on responsiveness. A 240Hz PC monitor will make all the difference. Most gamers are currently on 144 Hz or even 60 Hz monitors. With a 240Hz PC monitor you get increased responsiveness and a smoother gaming experience with reduced motion blur.

To take advantage of special features

Many 240 Hz PC monitors come with built-in quantum dot enhancement film, high dynamic range, eye strain prevention technology, and more.

For accurate color reproduction

If you work in IT (graphic designer, developer or web designer), a 240 Hz PC monitor can help with productivity, as some tools require the latest technology to ensure that color and image quality are displayed as expected.

Securing the future

If you can afford the latest or greatest option, then go for it! PC monitors with low refresh rates will not improve; they will become obsolete over time. As such, as long as your expectations are in the right place, purchasing a 240 Hz PC monitor will ensure that your computer parts will last.

To enjoy VRR

If you're getting a 240 Hz PC monitor, there's a good chance it has VRR or variable refresh rate. This is a technology that allows for a smooth, artifact-free image, ensuring a crisp picture, especially in competitive FPS games.

Tips

Check refresh rate compatibility with your graphics card

Synchronization technologies are designed to work with GPUs to solve problems like screen tearing, but that's far from the only role GPUs play in display performance. If you want 240 Hz performance, you also need a GPU that can keep up with your game.

Think about ergonomics

Being able toadjust the position of the monitor as you play is something that can't be underestimated. You don't want to break your neck. If you spend a lot of time playing tournaments, it's a good idea to choose a 240 Hz PC monitor that has tilt, swivel, rotation and height adjustments.

Think about gaming features

It's good to be on the lookout for additional features offered by a 240 Hz PC monitor. In addition to VRR and fast response time, features such as a black stabilizer, custom reticle, display alignment, and a timer can give you an edge, including a competitive advantage over your opponents in competitive online games.

Take care of your 240Hz PC monitor

Dust or fingerprints could get on your 240 Hz PC monitor. To ensure its maintenance, it will be necessary to clean it. Start by turning off the screen so as to detect dirt and avoid damaging it. Dust it with an antistatic microfiber cloth, a soft cloth that does not leave lint or scratches on the surface. If stains persist, try using a cleaner designed for these types of equipment, or you can use water with an ammonia- and acetone-free cleaner like vinegar or alcohol.

Organize your gaming space

Thegaming space will be your gaming temple and defines the basic element to establish your gaming setup. Your PC screen will also be part of all the equipment and accessories needed for your gaming environment. In this sense, customizing your space to your liking will offer great comfort.

FAQ

My game has trouble displaying in full screen mode. What should I do?

It is possible that the window mode and the screen mode are reversed. This can happen in some games, and the solution is to switch to window mode. To do this, go to the main menu, into options, and then disable the "full screen" mode. A manual adjustment of your 240 Hz PC screenmay also be necessary to fix the problem. To do this, adjust the vertical and horizontal positions of the monitor. If the problem persists, a graphics card upgrade may be necessary.

Why should I choose a minimum response time for a 240 Hz PC monitor?

Alsodefined as latency, this characteristic is summarized by the time it takes the pixels on your 240 Hz PC monitor to switch between the different colors of one image and another. Also, it is presented by the display reaction time which is calculated in milliseconds. Nowadays, this point is highly considered by all PC gaming screen designers. It should be noted that all gamers, professional or amateur take more and more into account this level on their future screen due to a large flow of gaming action.

Which games would look better on a 240 Hz PC monitor?

PC monitors with high refresh rates, such as 240 Hz, greatly promote the smoothness of your display. So it's generally advisable to play with fast, responsive games, such as FPS or TPS. And on competitive titles such as Overwatch or even PUBG the visual comfort provided by a 240 Hz PC monitor can make a difference.

Is it wise to choose a 240 Hz 4K PC monitor?

4K is no longer a very young resolution and has perfectly succeeded in breaking into the consumer market. Especially since native 4K content is now more and more accessible. However, for the time being, a 1440p or even 1080p screen will be more than enough to make the most of a 240 Hz refresh rate.
