How to choose your air compressor

The air compressor is essential for tyre maintenance. This versatile tool can also be very useful in many other situations, so take some time to think before buying one. To help you, make your choice by considering the following parameters:

#1 - The air flow

Expressed in liters per minute (L/min), airflow is a key criterion for choosing an air compressor. The higher the flow rate, the more work the air tool can do, not just inflate tires or balloons. You'll be able to staple, blow clean, glue, drill, screw, chisel, grind and paint on a regular basis.

#2 - The pressure

Also choose the air compressor based on the tools you'll be using. To inflate a tire, a 1.5 hp portable unit with a maximum pressure of 8 bar should be sufficient. If you plan to use different air tools at the same time, add up the pressure of these tools and add 2 or 3 bars for more safety.

#3 - The capacity of the tank

For intensive use, buy an air compressor with a large tank. For heavy-duty use, buy an air compressor with a large tank, as an empty tank will mean waiting for it to refill before you can restart the unit and get on with the job. Portable compressors have an 8 L tank. Other more powerful models have 50, 100 or even 150 L tanks. Also note that continuous operation tools such as air sanders, air guns or sandblasters require a large capacity tank. This avoids the need to run the motor continuously, which not only generates a lot of noise, but also accelerates the aging of the air compressor.

The power

The power of a compressor is a direct result of the air flow and the volume of the tank. In itself, it is not really a key criterion for choosing a compressor, since all models are powerful enough to inflate tires.

#4 - Weight and size

Buy

an air compressor based on the space available and your ability to carry it. Models weighing less than 20 kg are easy to carry and compact. But for regular use, opt for models with wheels. Heavier and more cumbersome, they weigh 20 to 150 kg. Some professional models are permanently fixed in a workshop.

#5 - Accessories

Depending on the type of compressor you buy, you'll need a number of accessories. These include the pressure switch, which automatically triggers the motor whenever the tank falls below 4 bar. The pressure regulator is also useful, as is the pressure gauge that indicates the air pressure in the tank. For large air compressors, a full stretcher may be required to move it more easily. Castor wheels are useful in tight spaces, and can be inflated if you need to move the compressor over gravel or sand. As for the direct tank outlet, it ensures an alternative air outlet at 8 bars, especially for impact wrenches. To regulate the heat of the head during prolonged use, the cooler will be indispensable. An adjustable air filter retains impurities from the ambient air, which will prevent damage to the compression head. A simple filter regulator allows to have clean and dry air at the outlet.

The different compressor units

The motor that fills the tank with compressed air is called a compressor unit. There are 3 types of compressor units on the market.

Oil-free unit

The oil-free unit is used for portable compressors. It is intended for occasional use, generally for short periods of time. The advantage is that you do not have to add oil to lubricate. On the other hand, the service life is shortened. Note that it is often noisy.

Cast iron group

Unlike the oil-free unit, the cast iron unit has a longer service life. The cooling of the unit is also better because of the optimal heat exchange due to the cast iron. This type of compressor unit is used for large, heavily loaded compressors.

Aluminum unit

This is the most widely used compressor unit. It meets the needs of most do-it-yourselfers. However, avoid using an aluminum unit for professional purposes, as it does not cool as well or as quickly as a cast iron unit.

The Air Filter

Impurities in the intake air can damage the compressor unit. To prevent this problem, manufacturers have equipped compressors with air filters. Professional models also have filters at the outlet of the tank to ensure clean and dry air.

Air compressor maintenance

The best air compressors 9The best air compressors 9

If you want the compressor to last, you will need to perform periodic maintenance. This is especially true for single and dual cylinder air compressors.

The Air Filter

There's a major drawback to drawing in ambient air: as the compressor unit draws in air, it also draws in particles and dust that can damage air tools. Keep it clean for maximum efficiency and long life.

The tank

Compressing moist air creates condensation inside the tank. To prevent this standing water from eating away at the metal or freezing, manufacturers have equipped compressors with a drain screw located under the receiver. The tank must be drained regularly before a long period of inactivity. Portable air compressors are not affected.

Oil change and level

For single and dual cylinder air compressors, the oil level should be checked periodically. Add oil as needed and change the oil at least once a year. Failure to lubricate a single or twin cylinder compressor will significantly reduce its life.

Tips for use

The air compressor is a noisy tool, despite the fact that manufacturers sometimes boast about their supposedly quiet compressors. When using it, wear noise-cancelling headphones or at least earplugs. The compressor is also dangerous. To prevent accidents, find out the operating pressures of your air tools.

In addition, some air compressors require periodic checks and inspections every 40 months. Many accidents occur because of waterlogged vessels or faulty pressure switches and regulators. All the more reason to check everything before use.

For small pneumatic tools, use an air supply hose with an internal diameter of 6 to 8 mm. For large tools, use a 10 to 12 mm inner diameter hose. And to avoid loss of efficiency, maintain the same inside diameter from the compressor air outlet to the tool connection.

How do you manage the air pressure in your tires?

The best air compressors 11The best air compressors 11

Low tire pressure

If your tire pressure is below the recommended level, you will need to add air. This process is very simple. First, push the hose nozzle firmly into the valve of the tire to be inflated. Turn on the air compressor and recheck the pressure on the gauge. Add more air if necessary.

Tire pressure too high

If the tire pressure is too high, you will need to lower it. To do this, push the gauge nut into the tire valve just far enough to let the air out. Some gauges have a bleeder valve, but most have a small pin to insert into the valve. When you're done, screw the cap back on the valve stem.

The different types of air compressors

There are several types of compressors to meet various needs. Here are the 3 most common types at present.

Single cylinder air compressor

This is the most popular type of air compressor. With tank volumes ranging from 25 to 250 L, it is suitable for jobs requiring large amounts of compressed air. There are vertical cylinder models and more common horizontal models.

Unlike the portable compressor, the single-cylinder air compressor offers more versatility of use. It can nail, paint, chisel, grind, screw, inflate, etc. In addition, this type of air compressor can withstand prolonged and regular use. The air flow rate is also very high.

It has a tank capacity of 25 to 250 L and an air flow rate of up to 40 min 3 s/h. Suitable for heavy duty and prolonged use, you need to regulate the pressure before use. Difficult to carry around because of its weight and size. It needs to be lubricated to last longer.

So if you have a large need for compressed air, it is recommended to use this type of air compressor. Its versatility will allow the user to perform a wide variety of tasks. The Mecafer Fifty 425090 compressor is one of the single-cylinder models.

The twin-cylinder air compressor

You won

't find a more efficient or powerful twin-cylinder air compressor. It's also the most expensive type on the market. Its airflow exceeds 40 min 3 s/h, with a maximum pressure of up to 13 bar. Due to its weight and size, this tool requires suitable installations.

Twin-cylinder air compressors are mainly found in professional workshops of all kinds. In addition, this type of device can supply a compressed air network and power several tools simultaneously. You can operate a blow gun, a paint gun and a pneumatic nailer at the same time.

This type of compressor is expensive and requires special installations. Because of its configuration, the twin-cylinder compressor is designed for large installations. It is primarily intended for professional use and can be used in workshops. The Scheppach 2200W is a twin-cylinder compressor.

The portable air compressor

This

type of compressor is easy to transport, due to the weight which does not exceed 15 kg. In particular, some models weigh less than 4 kg! For the power supply, you can connect it to the 230 V mains, or to a 12 V battery, or even a cigarette lighter socket. The other big advantage of the portable air compressor is that it does not need oil. However, the volume of the tank will not exceed 20 l. This limits its use to inflating and cleaning with a blower. A portable air compressor is used for occasional small jobs.

The weight does not exceed 15 kg. Some models weigh between 3 and 4 kg. It can be connected to the mains, to a 12 V battery or to a cigarette lighter socket. It is sufficient to inflate tires or to clean with a blower. This type of compressor lacks versatility with a tank capacity limited to 20. It is unsuitable for intensive use. The portable air compressor is suitable for inflating tires, toys and mattresses or for blowing out. Be careful, it does not support an intensive or prolonged use.

Vertical or horizontal air compressor?

Vertical compressor

The vertical compressor is an oil-free unit. It requires an outlet oiler to lubricate tools such as the drill or the sander. This first model is easier to maintain thanks to the oil change. Compared to the horizontal model, the vertical compressor stands upright and therefore takes up very little space. However, it is less easy to move.

Horizontal compressor

The horizontal compressor is also called a lubricated compressor. This means that the air emitted by the horizontal model contains some oil, which requires an oil-removing filter for its use. The difference is also in the handling. The horizontal compressor is easier to move. On the other hand, it takes up much more space than the vertical type.

Verdict

These 2 configurations can give the same efficiency since they have similar air flows and regulation systems. The only way to tell them apart is by handling them. To choose, determine your real needs. If your priority is to save space for storage and time for maintenance, the vertical compressor is for you. However, if you need to move around a lot, a horizontal compressor is better.

Why buy an air compressor?

It is useful in a wood workshop

An air compressor can be used for more or less demanding tasks in a wood workshop. It is very useful for any nailing or sanding activity. It is also used to paint wood with a spray gun or to clean dust in the most inaccessible corners.

It improves painting jobs

It can be difficult to apply paint evenly to large areas. An air compressor can apply paint smoother and better.

It makes your construction and renovation work easier

The air compressor also comes in handy at home for all your construction work. While some people use it to strip paint or paint walls, others use it to patch a facade or drill holes.

It can be used for small everyday jobs

Not only do-it-yourself jobs are concerned. The air compressor can also be used to inflate your swimming pool, a buoy or a canoe. Air compressors are useful for inflating tubes in tyres and all types of blow-up materials more quickly and easily.

It is of great use in a mechanical workshop

Occasionally, the air compressor can inflate your tires and adjust their pressure. With a perfectly adapted paint gun, it allows you to paint or repaint the bodywork of your car for a better result.

Tips

Be aware of the time of use

It is important to know that an air compressor should not be used more than 50% of its real operating time. Since it expends enough energy, it should rest half the time to avoid the risk of overheating.

Consider adding an additional tank

With an air extension cord, it is possible to add an additional tank to your air compressor. This will not only allow you to increase the volume of air available, but also to work more conveniently. Indeed, due to the absence of a motor, the additional tank is very light and easy to handle.

Limit the noise of your air compressor

The air compressor is a rather noisy device. To remedy this, take a waterproof box and place it at the air inlet of the cylinder. Then connect the end of this box with an air filter trapped in a plastic box. With this sound trap, the noise from your air compressor will be greatly reduced.

Store it properly

Your air compressor should be placed in an area with a clean, dry air inlet. Your air compressor should be placed in an area with a clean, dry air inlet, as wet conditions can damage the machine and cause electrical malfunctions.

Perform maintenance actions at appropriate times

Note that you should never add or change the oil and fuel in your air compressor while it is running, or when it has been recently used. If this happens, there is a good chance that your unit will catch fire and cause a fire.
