How to choose your Weber barbecue

The American brand is THE reference in terms of barbecue. In addition to the quality of manufacture, the lifespan and the design that we will see later, you should take into account 5 major criteria before buying a Weber barbecue.

#1 - The type of barbecue

Gas, charcoal or electric, all Weber barbecues are designed for outdoor use. Charcoal gives grills that typical taste. The user-friendliness of charcoal barbecues is well known. However, the lighting can be complex and you have to watch the cooking and the smoke development.

Unlike charcoal models, Weber gas barbecues are easy to light. Most are equipped with an electric piezo system. The burners allow for a quick heating up. Especially since each of them has independent settings. However, its major drawbacks are its size, weight and price.

Weber does not manufacture planchas with integrated heat source, but its offer includes free-standing planchas and electric barbecues. No fuel to manage, almost no smoke, an ultra-simple on/off system, and a small footprint are the common features of these models.

#2 - The number of guests

The number of people you usually entertain determines the cooking surface needed. If the cooking grid is rectangular, count less than 2,000 cm² for 4 to 6 people, 2,000 to 2,500 cm² for 6 to 8 people, 2,000 to 2,500 cm² for 8 to 10 people, and more than 3,000 cm² beyond 12 people. For circular cooking grids, the diameter must be taken into account.

Below 50 cm in diameter, the grill will be sufficient for 4 to 6 people. A grill with a diameter of 50 to 55 cm will allow cooking for 6 to 8 people. Count 55-60 cm in diameter for 8 to 10 people and more than 60 cm for more than 12 people. You can also take into account the number of burners, exclusive to gas barbecues, to calculate the number of guests. 2 burners should be enough for 4 to 8 people. You need at least 3 burners for 8 to 10 people and 4 or more burners beyond 10 guests.

#3 - The mobility

Most Weber barbecues are suitable for use on balconies, patios, in the garden, or when going outdoors. So when buying, you'll need to consider how easy it is to transport the barbecue. This means that the barbecue must be small and light, but still very robust. Many Weber barbecues are equipped with wheels to make them easier to move. The Q series is distinguished by the presence of a very practical removable cart. By removing it, you can transform the device into a table barbecue! The stability of the barbecue should also be taken into account to prevent accidents.

To Know

There are Weber pellet and wood barbecues. Only the size differentiates these fuels from charcoal. The constraints of use and the quality of cooking are the same.

#4 - The price

The

Weber brand is synonymous with quality. But its barbecues are among the most expensive on the market, regardless of the range. Count 80 euros minimum for a basic model in the entry-level range, 300 to 500 euros in the mid-range and up to 4,000 euros for an ultra high-end S670 GBS all in stainless steel.

#5 - The accessories

AllWeber barbecues are sold with a lid and a protective cover. Each charcoal model has a lighting chimney to quickly form embers. The gas models are the best equipped. They often have side shelves, a thermometer, a keep-warm grill and various storage compartments under the firebox.

In addition to the accessories provided, you can add tongs, a spatula, a long-handled fork, a potholder or a wire brush. You can even add skewers or even a spit if your barbecue allows it. And for models without a thermometer on the lid, treat yourself to a temperature probe.

How to use a Weber barbecue?

The choice of the location

The best Weber barbecues 9

Set up your Weber barbecue in a place protected from the wind, away from trees and dry grass. If there are branches nearby, cut them down or find another location. The surface you choose should be flat to ensure the stability of the barbecue and to prevent accidental tipping.

Keep the barbecue far enough away from the table to avoid disturbing guests, especially if you are using a charcoal barbecue. Do not lean the barbecue against the wall to avoid soot marks and never use a charcoal or gas barbecue in the house or garage. Only electric models are suitable for indoor use.

Lighting

Gas barbecue

Make sure the burner knobs are in the off position, turn on the gas supply and push in the master burner control knob. Then turn on the piezo ignition, which will produce a characteristic noise and spark. Repeat the operation if the burner does not function properly.

Look through the hole in the front of the fireplace to see if the burner is lit. A flame should be visible. Only after the main burner is lit can you activate the other burners. Set the temperature according to the food to be grilled, wait for the temperature to rise and then start cooking.

Cooking

The best Weber barbecues 10

Weber indicates cooking temperatures to be respected to avoid over or undercooked food. Steak should be cooked to 230-280°C, poultry to 140-200°C. For fish, the cooking temperature is between 160 and 180 °C. Game should be grilled at 130 to 180 °C. Finally, vegetables require a temperature of 150 to 180 °C.

Even if these temperatures are respected, many factors can influence the cooking time, starting with the size of the food to be cooked. For steak, it is recommended to finish cooking at 130-150 °C. Charring occurs at about 290 °C, which is ideal for removing residues stuck to the grill.

Maintenance

Carry out a complete maintenance of your Weber barbecue once a year. This will preserve its culinary qualities and prolong its life. You will also need to clean the barbecue after each use.

Weber gas barbecue

The best Weber barbecues 11

Clean the cooking grate before or after cooking. To do this, turn on the burners to maximum power. Let the grill heat up for 20 minutes until the smoke disappears, a sign that the food residue and grease have charred. Extinguish the fire and brush the grate with a brass brush. Never put a Weber grill in the dishwasher.

It is not necessary to remove the Flavorizer bars to clean them. Simply turn on all burners to full power. Occasionally, you can brush the Flavorizer bars with a brass brush. But like the grill, they should never be put in the dishwasher.

Cleaning the body of a Weber gas grill starts with the outside of the lid and pan. Remove grease from these surfaces with Weber cleaner or water and dishwashing liquid. Remember to rinse thoroughly. For the inside of the bowl, brush the surface while it is still warm and wipe off any residue with paper towels.

Finally, cleaning the grease trap requires waiting for the barbecue to cool down. Remove it and wipe off the grease deposits with paper towels. Weber also offers disposable grease trays to be replaced at each use to optimize the life of its gas barbecues.

Weber charcoal barbecue

Cleaning is less tedious and less demanding than on a gas model. Immediately after cooking, remove food residues stuck to the cooking grate with a brush with brass bristles. If the rack has cooled down, turn the heat back on and heat the rack. Or use hot water to remove the residue.

Dispose of the ashes after the embers have been extinguished. Wait for the ashes to cool so you don't get burned. Feel free to pour a little water on them to keep them sticky and prevent them from flying away. For the interior, hot soapy water, a sponge and a cloth will do the trick. You can also use a Weber cleaning product.

Weber Electric Barbecue

To clean the inside of the bowl, first unplug the power cord and wait for the electric grill to cool. Scrape the interior with a dedicated brush, which will remove excess grease. Then clean the sides of the bowl with a paper towel. For extreme cases, use a mild soap and sponge.

Cleaning the outside walls and lid requires water and dishwashing liquid or Weber cleaner. Remember to rinse thoroughly. For the grease trap, remove it when the grill has cooled. Clean it with a paper towel or cloth and hot soapy water.

The different types of Weber barbecues

With the aim of offering a wide choice to its customers, Weber is positioned on all types of barbecues: coal, gas and electric.

Weber charcoal barbecues

Less than a dozen models are offered by Weber in the charcoal barbecue category. They are distinguished by their vintage look that appeals to fans of authentic style. Various colors are also offered. Charcoal barbecues are chosen for their affordable price. Unlike the cooking devices of this type that are presented on the market, Weber models have a compact size, which allows you to use them in any context.

You can perform all types of cooking with these materials. Only some of them are transportable, but all models are efficient. The weight of these barbecues varies from 1 to 42 kg. There is really something for everyone. Especially since the heavier models have wheels for easy transport.

Weber gas barbecues

Weber offers 4 models of gas barbecues, available in various versions depending on the accessories you buy. Very practical, these gas barbecues are all equipped with advanced functions such as temperature control and ignition button. Their shape differs from one model to another, but they are innovative and attractive.

Some of Weber gas barbecues are compact, others take up space. The latter are intended to be used in a specific place, without frequent movement. This does not prevent you from choosing the smaller and lighter models that can be taken on a trip or a picnic. Note that the cooking time is particularly fast thanks to the power of these devices.

Weber electric barbecues

The brand's electric barbecues are just as efficient as the gas models. You can find the same options on these devices with a few more advantages. Weber electric barbecues are very environmentally friendly. For the Weber electric barbecues, you have 2 choices of models. The first one offers a power of 1,400 W and the other one, more powerful, has 2,400 W. The latter has a rather small cooking plate that is only suitable for 2 people. Opt for the first barbecue to prepare grilled food for several people.

Weber barbecue or Campingaz barbecue?

Weber Barbecue

The Weber brand represents the ultimate in barbecuing. It is known worldwide for the practical features of its charcoal and gas barbecues. Weber models can be recognized by their impeccable design, their ease of use, the quality of their cooking surface, the safety of their use as well as their longevity which can reach 25 years.

Whether it's a gas, electric or charcoal grill, Weber barbecues allow you to grill beautifully without giving your food an aftertaste. The only problems are the rather long waiting time for gas barbecues and the difficulty to light for charcoal barbecues. And the price of a Weber can exceed 1000 euros.

Campingaz Barbecue

It is a brand of French origin, world famous for its gas barbecues. The size of a Campingaz barbecue is generally compact. Its main advantages are the unscrewable legs and the fast cooking. In addition, the gas cylinder can be disconnected and reconnected without complication.

However, Campingaz has a few disadvantages. Its barbecues are often expensive. Moreover, they are exclusively gas barbecues, hence the name of the brand. And most of them require careful maintenance, especially of the burners, to keep them working perfectly. On the other hand, the grease collection tank of some models is small.

Verdict

If you like to enjoy a nice moment and prepare your grills in the garden or during the vacations, a Weber barbecue will be perfect. If you want to cook even more easily and quickly in several places, the Weber barbecue is recommended.

Why buy a Weber barbecue?

For the quality of manufacture

Experts and grill lovers alike see Weber as the reference for barbecues. Whichever model you choose, it is worth every penny. The American brand has no equal in terms of manufacturing quality. The choice of materials (mainly stainless steel), the quality of assembly, the thickness of the plates... nothing is left to chance.

For ease of use

Weber invented the Kettle, a round barbecue whose shape has been copied by all the competition. The brand has a head start on the competition, especially when it comes to ease of use. Even its charcoal models light up faster and easier than those of other brands. Not to mention the accessories provided!

For long life

Weber is the only brand to guarantee its barbecues for up to 10 years. On its top-of-the-range models, this guarantee remains valid, regardless of the climatic conditions to which you expose the barbecue! The different parts remain robust and do not deform despite the weight of years.

For the design

One thing you will appreciate about Weber is that they don't just offer their barbecues in black or metallic grey. You can buy pink, green, white and many other barbecues. Moreover, the always successful design of a Weber barbecue is easy to recognize, despite the many imitations out there.

Tips

Oil the rack before cooking.

Before each cooking, spread oil on your Weber grill with a paper towel or sponge. This way, the food will come off more easily, which will limit the amount of deposits you'll have to scrape off when cleaning. Avoid olive oil, however, as it can make food taste bad.

Clean up immediately after cooking.

Ideally,

clean a Weber gas or charcoal grill before you sit down to eat. After all, it takes 15 seconds to clean a hot grill and 15 minutes when it's cold! If you've waited for the grill to cool, turn it back on to char and brush off any food residue.

Consider the cooking temperatures listed.

Weber

delivers its grills with specific temperature ranges for each type of food. Respecting them avoids eating overcooked or undercooked food. In both cases, there is a health risk: cancer, poisoning... And never exceed 290 °C, except to remove food residues stuck to the grill.

Consider the safety instructions.

Place

your Weber grill on a flat, hard, heat-resistant surface. Narrow, enclosed or wooded areas are not recommended. Keep children away from a running barbecue and wear gloves to prevent burns. Finally, avoid grilling near flammable objects and don't use water to put out flames.

Never put a Weber's cooking rack in the dishwasher.

Some people

will be tempted to put their stainless steel grill in the dishwasher to save themselves the chore of cleaning or get it all clean. But this reduces the quality of cooking. In fact, a brushed grill retains some charred food residue, which adds flavor to grilled food. The opposite of a dishwasher-safe rack.

FAQ

How do I clean a Weber charcoal grill?

You'll need a few tools to do the cleaning: a brass brush, soap, a pair of gloves, Weber cleaner and a rag. Start with the grill, which you will scrub with the brass brush while it is still hot. The ashes of the barbecue should only be removed when the barbecue is turned off. Then you can clean it with the cleaner and a cloth. A little tip: use hot water and soap to optimize the cleaning.

Why won't my gas grill light up?

If you have an ignition problem, no matter what type of gas barbecue you bought, first make sure the burner is working properly. It's also possible that the gas line is clogged or that the electrode wires are damaged. Above all, do not hesitate to disassemble the system if necessary, as a simple blockage by any pest can cause the failure.

Should I use a cover for my grill?

The use of a protective cover when your weber barbecue is not in use optimizes its lifespan, especially if in times of rain and snow. However, avoid using just any protection; it is best to order a product from the same brand. Above all, make sure that the barbecue is clean before covering it.

When to use the grill lid?

The cover of a Weber barbecue must be used if you want to achieve even cooking. It is essential for cooking a roast or a leg of lamb. You can also cover your cooking device when cooking fish. This way, the heat distribution inside will be more even and you won't risk burning the food.
