Resolution describes the number of pixels that make up the image on a screen, described in terms of horizontal rows and vertical columns. More pixels translate into a sharper image and finer detail, so higher resolution is (almost always) better.
4K TVs are very affordable and mainstream these days. You can get 50-inch 4K TVs with value for money and good ones too. In fact, it is now harder than you think to find HDTVs for sale. HD resolution now only has to be for smaller screen sizes, between 20 and 40 inches in general.
High Dynamic Range (HDR) is the TV buzzword that continues to buzz, and tends to go hand in hand with 4K TVs. With HDR, the higher the dynamic range (brightness and color), the more realistic the image. HDR offers greater subtlety and depth of color gradations, as well as stronger contrast.
There are different types of HDR, and with different brands of TVs supporting different variants.
Connections don't differ as much on TVs as they used to, with most having at least three (often four) HDMI inputs enough, for example, for a Blu-ray player, set-top box, game console, and media player.
4K TVs will have at least one HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 certified port for native 4K and HDR content. HDMI 2.1 is also creeping into the TV specs, bringing much greater bandwidth capacity allowing dynamic HDR to be switched to 4K/120fps and 8K/60fps, for example, and support for eARC.
Only LG's 2019 TVs were officially HDMI 2.1 certified, but many models from other brands have begun adding HDMI 2.1 capabilities to their HDMI 2.0
TV connections now, with almost all new models featuring built-in wi-fi and Ethernet connectivity, and hosting at least Netflix, BBC iPlayer and YouTube apps.
Most also add Amazon Prime Video and other catch-up services. It's also worth checking to see if your potential new value TV has an app that offers 4K and HDR pay-per-view movie streaming. Google Play Movies is a less gimmicky, but more widely available alternative.
While Rakuten is available on most TVs, but only offers 4K and HDR to a few.
Whether you're looking for a basic or high-performance TV, the most important factor in your decision will likely be screen size. Consider how many people in your family typically watch at the same time and where you'll put your new set.
Then choose the largest screen size that comfortably fits that space and your budget. The sweet spot today, considering price, performance and the typical living room, is between 55 and 65 inches.
The refresh rate, expressed in Hertz (Hz) describes how many times per second an image is refreshed on the screen. The standard refresh rate is 60 times per second, or 60 Hz.
However, in scenes with fast-moving objects, a 60 Hz refresh rate can make things blurry or unstable, especially on LCD HDTVs. So, to create a more solid picture, manufacturers have doubled the refresh rate to 120 Hz and in some cases up to 240 Hz.
You'll want to make sure that the TV you get has a built-in wireless tuner. It will allow you to watch free local TV shows, usually of better quality than cable, satellite or streaming. Some new TVs are user-friendly, with full grid-style program guides for over-the-air TV shows.
LED TV is a type of LCD TV that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to backlight the screen instead of the cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) used in standard LCD TVs.
LED televisions are more formally known as LED-backlit LCD televisions. An LED is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electric current is passed through it. The light is not particularly bright, but in most LEDs it is monochromatic, occurring at a single wavelength.
Compared to fluorescent lamps, LEDs have significantly lower power requirements and convert energy into light more efficiently, so less heat is lost and focus it more precisely so there is less light leakage, which can cause blurring.
An LED also lasts much longer than most other lighting technologies. LED-backlit LCD TVs are available in a wide variety of screen sizes and, thanks in part to the technology's low production cost, at affordable prices.
OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) is a panel technology that uses self-emitting particles, so there is no need for a backlight. It is this type of panel that differentiates OLED from other types of television technology.
It also allows OLED TVs to be incredibly thin, while offering convincing blacks, strong contrast and superb viewing angles. LG, Sony, Panasonic and Philips are the big brands with OLED TVs in their lineups.
In general, OLED TVs from these brands have been excellent. Most of the latest and greatest TVs you can buy today have OLED panels, as do high-end smartphones, including the iPhone 11 Pro.
These days, only Samsung's QLED panels offer a rival to this type of technology.
QLED (Quantum-dot Light-Emitting Diode), meanwhile, is Samsung's answer to OLED. A QLED TV is an LCD TV but with a quantum-dot coating on the backlight.
However, the quantum dots (tiny semiconductor particles) in today's QLEDs do not emit their own light. Thus, QLED TVs, like conventional LCDs, rely on a backlight. The benefits of a QLED TV? You tend to get vibrant colors, as well as bright, crisp and detailed images.
Samsung's QLEDs have improved over the years, existing as a good alternative to OLED TVs.
Television is an easy and cheap source of entertainment for everyone. We sit in our living rooms in the evening to be entertained with television programmes. With a wide range of channels to choose from, television ensures that everyone is catered for.
There are channels for children, teenagers, adults and the golden generation. There are all the necessary programs. We are kept informed and up to date with the latest news in the world.
On the other hand, watching too much television is not good for your health. Studies have shown that there is a correlation between watching television and obesity.
Front projectors generate the largest image size possible. You can use them to create the very large screen experience of a commercial theatre in your own home. In theory, the actual image size can be up to 300" diagonal or more. But in reality, the image size of a given projector is limited by its light output.
Nevertheless, most projectors produce beautiful images at sizes of 90" to 120" diagonal, which is much larger than anything you can get with flat panel or rear projection TVs. On the other hand, most projectors don't have audio on board, or if they do, it's not the audio you'd want to use for showing movies.
So most people who opt for a projector also install a separate surround sound system to go with it.
You need to carefully consider whether it is the right option to opt for a video projector over a TV, however, projectors have their limitations.
You will need a dark room or the image on the screen may look washed out and attaching the projector to your ceiling for example, may require extensive DIY. It's best to opt for a television, as it's easy to use and very convenient. Television is the best source that brings you all the important and valuable news.
Moreover, they are available in various sizes with applications already integrated.
Everything is connected
These TVs are designed to be fully integrated with Internet and web capabilities, including interactive online media, cutting-edge content, on-demand streaming media and home network access. They are compatible with most smartphones and tablets, allowing the user to stream what they are watching or working on from one device to another for added convenience, sharing or clarification.
The built-in connectivity of all these devices allows manufacturers to download new systems or applications to keep the processing system up to date. This same functionality also allows the owner to download applications and content that customize their system and increase their personal ease of access.
Television is accessible entertainment and escape
Television has become an extremely accessible form of entertainment. It's often much cheaper than going to the movies or a concert. In fact, some streaming platforms even allow you to watch these shows for free at home.
Streaming platforms, such as Netflix, mean that people who enjoy watching television have access to more shows than ever before. Television can show us a completely different perspective on life and the world around us. This makes it a great way to escape the stresses and strains of everyday life.
Better image
The main reason to buy a TV even if it is value for money, is to get a better picture. While you may not notice the higher resolution immediately, you will notice brighter and bolder colours and, on most sets, deeper and darker blacks.
The new TVs use better backlight technology with more local dimming zones. One of the hottest buzzwords when discussing advanced TV technology is always 4K Ultra HD. The average buyer, however, may not know exactly what the term means. The short answer is that the phrase refers to the number of pixels present on a given screen, regardless of its size.
Older Full HD TVs contained, on average, about 2 million pixels. Newer 4K Ultra HD TVs contain 4 times as many, exceeding about 8 million pixels. More pixels on the screen means the screen can hold more visual information. The more information you have on a screen, the sharper the picture will be.
Saving money
Buying a value-for-money TV with the potential to be highly adaptable in an ever-changing technology landscape will save you from having to upgrade your equipment every few years. These "future-proof" TVs may require downloadable software from time to time, but that's a small price to pay for technology that will be around for years to come.
Plus, even if you buy a monumental TV, the lightweight and durable materials used in production today ensure that it will travel well if and when you decide to move.
Screen Size
One of the first things potential buyers think about when deciding to buy a new TV, besides price, is size. These days, our technology allows us to build incredibly thin and durable TVs with incredible clarity that are almost as big as our imaginations allow.
In our opinion, the best brands of Value for money TV in 2022 are :
Samsung, a South Korean company that is one of the world's largest producers of electronic devices. Samsung specializes in the production of a wide variety of consumer and industrial electronics, including home appliances, digital media devices, semiconductors, memory chips and embedded systems. Arguably, it has become one of the most recognizable names in technology today.
Sony Corporation is one of the best-known names in consumer electronics. Since its inception shortly after World War II, Sony has released a series of groundbreaking products, including the transistor radio, the Trinitron television, the Betamax VCR, the CD player, the Walkman portable cassette player, and the PlayStation game console. Sony is ranked among the best in sound development in all their designs.
LG Electronics is a core company of the South Korean conglomerate group LG, alongside LG Chem, founded in 1958. LG Electronics is a global innovator in technology and consumer electronics with a presence in almost every country and an international workforce of more than 75,000. LG is a leading manufacturer of consumer and commercial products ranging from TVs, appliances, air solutions, mobile devices, monitors, service robots, automotive components and its premium brands LG SIGNATURE and smart LG ThinQ are household names around the world.
Founded in 1969, Hisense is one of the world's largest consumer electronics and appliance companies. Hisense offers a wide range of technology-driven products that are manufactured and distributed worldwide, including smart TVs, smart phones, refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, among other products. Hisense has earned and continues to earn the respect and loyalty of consumers around the world.
TCL is a fast-growing consumer electronics company and a leading player in the global television industry. Founded in 1981, it now operates in more than 160 markets worldwide. TCL is one of the world's leading specialists in the development and manufacture of consumer electronics products ranging from televisions, audio products and smart home.
The diagram below will help you to get an idea of the typical prices for each price range (entry-level, mid-range and high-end).
However, more expensive does not necessarily mean better.
We therefore advise you to always consult our ranking before deciding, rather than blindly relying on price ranges.
4K and HDR
We're past the point where 4K is a high-end luxury, especially with 8K poised to be a major force in a few years. You may be able to find a smaller TV that is still 1080p, but most displays on the market will be 4K. With that in mind, we recommend not going below 4K when purchasing. Getting a value TV with 4K resolution is the norm, but not all 4K TVs are created equal.
Connectivity
Like 4K, smart TV platforms are now basically universal, even for value TVs. If you get a new TV, there will be a way to watch Netflix on it, and probably many other streaming services as well. Thanks to Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Roku TV, any TV manufacturer can insert a connected interface into their product without creating it themselves.
Motion interpolation or smoothing
As far as TV settings go, motion interpolation is a rather controversial topic. It makes movies look like a cheap soap opera or a video you shoot on your phone. If you've ever looked at a new TV and felt like something was wrong, or that the picture didn't look real, this is probably it. A new value-for-money TV almost certainly has this feature enabled in modes other than movie or theater. Turning it off may change your opinion of your purchase.
Brightness control
To adjust the brightness, you're looking for the opposite type of content from the contrast. Turn down the brightness control until everything disappears into blackness or something close to it. From there, turn it back so you can see the details of everything.
Start with the right image mode
The picture mode of your TV has the biggest effect on the overall picture quality. This setting controls several other settings to change the overall appearance of your TV. If you've never changed this setting, it's probably still the default mode, usually labeled Standard, Vivid, Dynamic, Bright, or something similar. A starting point is to switch to a mode called Cinema, Film, Calibrated or Cineaste. These will bring out some of the more garish aspects of the image.
We recommend that you evaluate a value-for-money television offering based on industry-wide accepted standards and features. Be on the lookout for HDR compatibility, 4K resolution, and widely used smart home platforms such as Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. While these terms may seem too flashy themselves, comparing these features can give you a great basis on which to compare the myriad of value-for-money TV offerings out there.
While 4K may get the attention, ultimately what you want to focus on is high dynamic range (HDR). HDR is all about creating better color contrast, which translates into brighter whites and deeper blacks. This will create a noticeable change in your picture quality compared to simply upgrading to a 4K TV.
Most manufacturers are turning to TVs HDTVs and 4K resolution screens because the images are sharper. Many streaming services have started producing 4K content, and most 4K TVs can upgrade non-4K content for better viewing quality. Full HD is very common, but 4K is definitely the future. Therefore, you can buy 4K TVs to ensure your investment lasts.
It also depends on how you use the TV. The display refresh rate helps to represent motion for better viewing quality. If you watch shows without fast motion, a lower refresh rate will work fine. However, if you like fast-paced sports like football, you need a TV with higher refresh rates.
Every month we help more than 1 000 000 people buy better and smarter.
