As with laptops, the screen size on tablets is measured diagonally and is usually expressed in inches. Tablets, with or without a keyboard, fall into three categories: compact (7 inches to 9 inches), medium (over 9 inches to 11 inches) and large (over 11 inches). A compact tablet is particularly portable, lighter and easier to carry, and is generally less expensive. Medium and large tablets offer a larger screen area that can be particularly useful for productivity applications, gaming, and video viewing.
Display resolution is expressed in pixels per inch (ppi), and the higher the resolution, the sharper the text and images will be. Display resolution typically ranges from 1024 x 600 pixels to 2560 x 1700 pixels. Higher resolution displays require faster processors to handle all those extra pixels and consume more power, which affects the battery life of the device. Resolution will be even more important if you regularly use your tablet with keyboard to watch Full HD (1080p) video. A minimum resolution of 1024 x 720 pixels (720p) is recommended.
The capacity of most tablets with keyboards ranges from 16GB to 128GB. The amount of space you'll need depends on how you plan to use the tablet. All tablets are suitable for general use, such as checking email, browsing the Web, and streaming video and other content on the Internet, because that doesn't require much information storage. However, if you like to carry around your music, videos and numerous applications, the storage capacity on the tablet will be an important consideration. If you carry a tablet around all day, battery life is an important consideration. This is a difficult specification to judge for tablets, because apps have different power consumptions. There are two standard methods for measuring battery life. One is to browse the web consistently, while the other is based on video viewing. Watching videos tends to consume more battery life. If you're multitasking or playing games, expect the battery life to be shorter than the manufacturer's claim. Good battery life should be at least eight hours of web browsing or video playback.
The operating system affects the content ecosystem you are linked to. For example, the three major tablet operating systems with keyboards (iOS, Android, Microsoft) provide digital storefronts from which you can purchase and download apps, music, movies, and other content.
On iOS, the App Store is the only real way to get apps for your iPad. Apple keeps pretty tight control over the apps you can buy through its store, which reduces the risk of downloading something malicious, but limits users' choices. The iTunes Store lets you buy music, movies and TV shows, while the iBooks app handles everything from e-books. Meanwhile, the Music app lets you listen to your own songs or stream music via the Apple Music subscription service.
Google Play is your official one-stop shop for getting apps, music and other content on your Android tablet. But the more open nature of Android means it's not the only way to get apps and other content, and manufacturers of Android tablets with keyboards sometimes bundle downloadable content into their own digital stores.
On Windows devices, you can buy apps, music and movies through the Windows Store. Since this is Windows, however, you can download apps from any source. Nevertheless, some software may only be available through the Windows Store, and since Microsoft checks everything in it, you run less risk of malware infection if you go through the Store.
The physical keyboard is still the best tool ever invented for entering text, and over the decades it has moved from typewriters to desktop computers, and from laptops to tablets.
The obvious advantage of a keyboard is the ability to type, which is not possible with a virtual keyboard. Those who are very skilled in this area can type faster than they can speak. Also, it is easier for the user to press the keys, as the buttons move under the fingertips, absorbing some of the impact.
