How to choose your gas furnace

#1 - Type of boiler

The low-temperature gas boiler: it gives off heat at around 40°C. There are two techniques, the chimney mode and the flue mode.

  • The chimney type gas boiler expels smoke through a chimney. It uses the air in the room where it is located.
  • The flue gas boiler works without a chimney. It is airtight and has two different circuits for air and smoke. The air it uses comes from outside.

The condensing gas boiler: it produces temperatures of around 90°C. It condenses the fumes produced during heating to exploit the heat produced by the water heating.

#2 - Floor or wall installation?

Thefloor installation is designed for rather large boiler models. It therefore requires fairly spacious premises. This technique is generally used to meet a large heating demand. The wall-mounted boiler, on the other hand, is reserved for smaller premises. It corresponds to more modest heating needs. It is usually used for dwellings without a special location, basement, or annex. There are models designed to be housed in very small spaces. It is also possible to separate the elements of some boiler models to distribute them in two different rooms.

#3 - The power

The heat output required for a boiler will be calculated according to the volume of the rooms to be heated. The power required will be expressed in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). Insulation can vary the calculation of heating requirements. Energy loss and the External Temperature Index ITE also play their part in calculating the power required from a boiler.

#4 - Performance

It is expressed in percent. It is the ratio between energy production and consumption. The higher the percentage, the more economical the boiler. It varies according to the techniques used for the different types of gas boilers. For low temperature gas boilers, the efficiency is 90%. These boilers require little money to purchase. In use, the savings compared to conventional boilers are about 20%. Condensing boilers have an efficiency of over 105%. Their price is higher than that of other boilers, but their gas consumption is by far the most advantageous. It leads to 30% savings compared to conventional boilers, and 10% compared to low-temperature gas boilers.

#5 - Smoke evacuation

Heating with a gas boiler causes the emission of smoke. This phenomenon can cause various inconveniences. There are specific rules to follow, with regard to your own safety. When using a low-temperature gas boiler with a chimney, it is essential to ensure that the air in the heated room is constantly renewed. The room should therefore preferably be open. It is also important to respect the neighbourhood. The fumes must be evacuated at a height. The discharge will be done by observing a certain distance from your doors and windows, and at a respectful distance from the neighboring houses.

The gas condensing boiler: how does it work?

How does the condensing gas boiler work?

In a condensing gas boiler, the gas heats the water of the central heating system, just like in a conventional boiler. The main difference between the two techniques is the fate of the smoke.

In an ordinary gas boiler, the fumes are simply guided to a flue. The gas condensing boiler will use these fumes to transform them into a heat source.

The flue gases released by the heating process contain water vapor. The boiler will condense these vapors. The heat emitted during this operation will be recovered by the boiler. The water is then evacuated through the wastewater systems.

The gas condensing boiler: many forms of use

The gas condensing boiler can be wall-mounted, for a modestly sized home, where saving floor space is an important consideration. In larger homes, or those with a garage or basement, the floor standing boiler is the most practical solution.

The gas condensing boiler can be connected to all hot water distribution systems. In general, it works with town gas. It can also be fed from a tank.

For good results, it is wise to add a hot water tank to the boiler. The boiler will be placed on the tank, which will reduce the space required.

The different types of gas boilers

All types of gas boilers work with this energy source. It is the method of feeding the heating circuit that changes everything.

Condensing gas boiler

Characterized by a very high efficiency, up to 105%, even 110%, the condensing gas boiler is based on a system of preheating water to obtain a steam that will then heat the contents of the boiler. The combustion of the gas is the result of this reaction. Once the water vapor starts to condense, it goes out with the wastewater.

With this system, the energy saving reaches 30% compared to the old boiler model. Moreover, the condensing gas boiler is the most popular option for the French at present. Especially since it is an investment that benefits from state aid for financing.

Low temperature gas boiler

The temperature produced by this boiler is around 40 °C. Its operation has not changed from the first models put on the market. Although, it knows a certain improvement in terms of energy performance. It is less expensive than the gas condensing boiler and thus seduces a good handful of households in search of a good heating equipment.

This low temperature allows for palpable savings. At the same time, thermal comfort is assured. In short, it is a good compromise for small budgets, although we are gradually trying to promote the condensing boiler. Besides, the efficiency provided does not reach 100%.

Conventional gas boiler

It is a gas boiler that heats with a high temperature that is between 60 and 80 °C. Impossible to make savings with this model. It is also the oldest gas boiler and it gives an efficiency of 80%. It is the least efficient and the most energy consuming.

Nevertheless, it is very efficient in terms of speed of heating. The gas combustion is used directly, which explains this high temperature. This equipment is however quite versatile. It heats radiators, but also all sanitary waters.

Ionic boiler or cogeneration boiler?

Ion boiler

The ionic boiler, or electrolysis boiler, heats by ionization. This technique is distinguished by the fact that it does not use gas or other heating substances. The ionic boiler does not require any resistance since this role is played by the water in the circuit.

The electricity circulates in a loop, with electrons being projected at a speed of about 28 km/s. These movements cause friction which gives rise to magnetic waves. These waves, in turn, agitate the water, causing it to heat up.

The system has two circuits. The primary circuit generates the ionization, with a water slightly added of bicarbonate. The secondary circuit is the heating/hot water circuit. It collects the energy via a plate heat exchanger.

Cogeneration boiler

Cogeneration is a system that provides both heat and electricity from a single energy source. When used on a small scale in a single-family home, it is called micro-cogeneration. This boiler produces hot water for sanitary purposes, heating and electricity.

The cogeneration boiler can run on wood, oil or gas. It generally uses the principle of condensation, with in addition a Stirling engine which will make function an alternator to obtain electricity. This movement releases heat that the boiler will recover to transform it into domestic hot water and heating.

Verdict

The ionic boiler is an interesting option if you are looking for a fuel-free equipment. By opting for the micro-generation boiler you will be able to produce your own energy, while benefiting from an efficient heating system.

Why buy a gas boiler?

Energy saving

Unlike other types of boilers, gas boilers work by recycling the heat in the combustion fumes and sending it directly into the heating circuit. Since this energy is free, you can save on your bill if you use a condensing model.

Versatility

Gas is suitable for all types of boilers, whether conventional, condensing or low-temperature. You can also use it to supply your home. It is also cleaner than other fuels like coal or wood. This saves you from having to clean all the time and increase your household chores even more.

Heating comfort

Since it is centrally heated, the heat from the gas boiler is more even and better distributed. This is a significant advantage compared to other types of heating such as electric heating. It uses different technologies and works with natural gas without any problem. This makes it very easy to use.

Space saving

You won't have to buy gas cylinders if you are connected to the natural gas in the area where you live. Your home is automatically refuelled and the conductors are all built into the walls. The gas boiler is also the least bulky solution on the market, as you won't have to dedicate a space to store fuel. Its compact size means that it can easily be placed in any corner of your home and you can install it yourself, without the need for professional help.

Easy to maintain

Gas heaters require no special maintenance. All you need to do is have your boiler inspected by a professional once a year to maximise its lifespan. You can also clean the central heating system with soap and water if necessary.

Tips

Insulate your pipes

Prevention is better than cure, so consider insulating your heating ducts to avoid heat loss. Remember to do this before winter arrives. Most home improvement stores sell inexpensive lagging material that can be installed in minutes.

Turn off the boiler and save money

Once

the weather warms up, you can turn off your boiler. If you have a combination boiler, you can simply turn it on "hot water only" and turn off the heat. But to avoid problems when winter returns, it's best to turn on your boiler once a month for 15 minutes during the summer.

Keep the pressure on

Boilers don't work properly when the pressure is too low. The correct pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar. This is easy to check, as there is a dial on the front of your boiler. If you need to adjust it, be sure to consult your manual.

Clean your boiler

Over time,

sludge can build up in your boiler system, which will naturally affect its efficiency. You can have it thoroughly cleaned by a professional who will use a strong detergent. This will remove all the sludge and debris from the pipes and ducts. You'll get maximum heat at a lower cost. It also helps extend the life of your boiler.

Perform periodic maintenance

Boilers need to be serviced regularly. Remember to take care of it regularly, your boiler will last longer and run more efficiently. For extra care, call a heating service technician. And take the opportunity to check your boiler's safety and performance and make any necessary repairs.
