How to choose your all-in-one computer

Despite the budget issue, you need to find the best all-in-one PC that has the best components to meet your needs.

#1 - Technical specifications

Since the upgrade options are very limited on an all-in-one PC, you will have to choose the right package from the start. For office and multimedia, family use, we suggest a configuration based on an i3 or Ryzen3, 2 cores and 2 or 4 threads, with 4 GB of RAM. This is the minimum and this configuration is available at a good price. For those who want a more enthusiast configuration, we recommend 4-core logic processors with 8GB of RAM. For games, you will have to do without, as most computers of this type rely mainly on an integrated chip. In addition, due to the components enclosed in the chassis, you need to pay attention to the temperature of the PC, find the right balance. If you can afford it, better choose a Mac for designers.

#2 - The screen

This is the main element of your all-in-one PC. Here, no case! First and foremost, don't compromise on screen size and choose products with at least a 27 panel. They offer the best balance between image quality and price level. On the other hand, if you have the means, or if you have a profession that requires it, opt for 2K or 4K screens. In another register of performance, you have the Retina type screen only present on all-in-one PCs designed by Apple.

#3 - Storage

This choice will be made according to your needs. The best choice will be a mix between two types of hard drives. A 128Gb SSD to install your OS, system, and a 1TB HDD to store your data. This is a recommended configuration, but as a minimum you can opt for a single 256 Gb SSD or a 1 TB HDD. This will allow you to see ahead and use an external drive if needed.

#4 - Connections

first thing to consider is the accessibility of the connectors on an all-in-one PC. Next, you need to look at their quality. Buy a computer with modern connectors like USB 3.1 type A or C. This will allow you to quickly transfer your files, music and video.

MacOs or Windows?

A MAC all-in-one computer has a better design with its Retina display as a highlight. Apple OSes have the advantage of being more stable with more accurate and scheduled updates. This translates into better optimized programs for smooth operation.

On a Mac, you can run Windows and still have a system that is more resistant to outside attacks like viruses. The only downside is their price. And, we forgot to mention the positioning of the keys which is different.

Windows is a very intuitive OS and accessible to the greatest number of people, even Mac fans. It has the most used word processor in the world, Office pack, and it has a better software environment compatibility than MACOS. Windows can be used to run a plethora of devices: PC, Laptop, tablet and smartphone. Moreover, PCs with this OS are affordable.

The big concern with Windows is its untimely updates that sometimes slow down or crash your computer, poorly optimized drivers. In addition, you should install a third-party antivirus to protect your PC against viruses, Trojans or Phishing.

First of all, it's a matter of personal affinity, as both have their own following that will waver little or nothing. If you're on a tight budget, you'll want to go for the Windows-based all-in-one PCs. But if you want the best screen definition, you'll have to pull out your wallet and look at the iMac.

The benefits of an all-in-one PC

An all-in-one PC is mostly dedicated to office use, but it has several cards up its sleeve to influence your decision.

On this type of computer, you just have the screen, keyboard and wireless mouse unlike a desktop PC. So it has compact dimensions which allows you to place it in an apartment with a small office space.

A better screen

First of all, we don't compare a 4K screen with a screen on an AIO. We keep all proportions in terms of price. The screens on the All in One PCs are much bigger than on a laptop and they have a better quality overall. While on an AIO one of the selling points is the screen, on a Tower you still have to spend more money in order to get a good screen. For office use, an all-in-one PC is a better investment.

All wireless

Here, there is no need to look for wireless accessories since it is already wireless. This is great for small spaces, or people who don't like tangled cables, because you just plug it in and you can start working. This is also a point for its great mobility. You can move it easily in any room, or in the office or at the grandparents' house, since it is lighter than a desktop PC.

Economical and practical

Since it doesn't have a separate power supply unit like traditional computers, the all-in-one PC is a great solution if you want to lower your energy bill. Because of their compact size, they have more modern connectivity like USB 3.0 Gen 1 or 2, USB Type-C, or Thunderbolt, as well as HDMI and DisplayPort connectors.

But obviously, not everything is beautiful, but nothing insurmountable.

It will never be repeated so often, but an all-in-one computer is mainly for people using Office software or doing multimedia. Games will only be possible if you make a big compromise. Moreover, the type of cooling present on this type of PC is far from adequate. To surf the web, you will have a fluid system.

The sound

Since all the components on this type of computer have been miniaturized, the on-board speakers are not great. To remedy this, you will have to connect a 2.0 or 5.1 sound system.

Use your external hard drive

In order to expand your internal disk space, without having to open the chassis, it is advisable to use its external drive, HDD or SSD, or buy one.

Contact the after-sales service

your all-in-one computer has a hardware failure, it will be wise to contact the after-sales service or a professional to make the repairs. Unlike a Tower, opening the chassis is more complex and requires special know-how.

Use rechargeable batteries

place of standard batteries, it is wiser to use rechargeable batteries on your wireless mouse. It's more economical and you'll be doing the right thing for the environment. However, you will need to choose batteries with a voltage of 1.5v for optimal use.

Clean your screen

Get yourself

some cleaning fluid specially designed for PC monitors and a microfiber cloth. Soak, partially, your cloth and start by making circular motions from the center to the outside. Finally, wipe the monitor dry. It is important to know that it is forbidden to use household cleaning products or alcohol on an LCD screen.

Customize your power options

adjusting your all-in-one PC's power options, you'll limit overheating and noise when it's in full workload. To do this, go to Control Panel and then select System. Next, you'll see the Power and Sleep tab; and choose the Additional Settings option.
In the next window, select the "Power Saving" option and then the tab to its right "Change Mode Settings". Once in the small Additional Settings window, look for the Sleep after and Hibernate after options. Reduce the values in these sections to reduce the power consumption of the whole.

What is the best all-in-one PC?

The best all-in-one PC depends on your needs and your budget. Read our buying guide to find out which products are the best.

Can you upgrade an all-in-one PC?

This is a very difficult task, as it depends on the motherboard technology, and the model you have. For example, in some cases the processor is soldered to the motherboard and it is difficult to integrate a graphics card like on a Tower. The two components that give some flexibility, depending on your model, are RAM and storage.

Can you connect a console to an all-in-one PC?

In general, the HDMI or DisplayPort connectors on an all-in-one PC are Output not Input. This means that you cannot use the display as a monitor unless your model has an Input port.

What are the best all-in-one PC brands?

Affordable options include Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard and Dell. At the high end you have Apple's iMac's with their Retina displays.

Can I install MacOS on a Windows PC?

No, it is not possible. But the reverse is possible, although of little interest. Both operating systems have been optimized for a specific software environment.
