How to choose your projector

Want to turn your living room or bedroom into a movie theater? Want to play on a screen larger than your TV while keeping the image sharp? Need an electronic tool that is powerful enough for a training session or business meeting? Whatever the intended use, the purchase of a video projector must be done wisely. To avoid buying a model that doesn't meet your expectations, follow our selection tips!

#1 - Projection technology

The projection technology of a video projector depends mainly on your uses. To make it simple, there are 3 kinds, namely:

  • DLP or Digital Light Processing technology offers unbeatable image quality and superior quality. It is perfectly suited to the viewing of movies or video games, so that you can dive in and be fully immersed in the world they offer.
  • The LCD or Liquid Crystal Display technology whose mechanism is almost identical to that of slide projectors. In simple terms, it reproduces an image through the polarization of light. It is an accessory especially popular in the professional or educational field.
  • The Tri-LCD or Tri-Liquid Crystal Display technology is a revisited and more advanced version of the traditional LCD technology. As you can see, it has three liquid crystal panels and offers optimal brightness. It aligns itself with the needs of movie and series fans.

#2 - The resolution

Although the image resolution is entirely based on the type of use, it remains a crucial parameter for those who wish to have an impeccable image quality above all. This is particularly the case for movie lovers and video game enthusiasts for whom image quality is crucial. In this sense, for professional and/or educational purposes, any resolution will do. However, if you're looking for an image that's close to realism, don't hesitate to choose an HD Ready or Full HD projector. The former generally offers a format of 1280 x 720 pixels, while the latter is close to 1920 x 1080 pixels. In addition, you will be surprised by the4K resolution offered by the latest high-end versions, with a format of 3840 x 2160 pixels.

#3 - The contrast

The contrast that expresses the ratio between black and white values is an important criterion in the choice of your future projector. The higher the contrast, the better the image quality with good color depth. In general, a minimum contrast of 800:1 is necessary to enjoy a good display of dark colors. However, the contrast ratio depends on the use of the projector and especially on the lighting of the room. For a home-cinema use in a dark room, a minimum contrast ratio of 2000 : 1 is necessary, which is not necessarily the case in the professional or educational context.

The lamp

The lamp is undoubtedly one of the key parts of a video projector, especially since it represents a large part of the price of the gadget. Unfortunately, it is not durable and deteriorates quickly. To ensure that it will work for a longer period of time, choose a projector with a lamp that lasts more than 30,000 hours.

#4 - Luminosity

The

brightness which is expressed in Lumens guarantees the clarity of the displayed image. The higher it is, the better it is, even in a dark room. But we might as well say that the brightness must be adjusted according to the lighting of the room where you use the video projector :

  • For a professional presentation, corporate rooms are brightly lit, even brightly lit. A high brightness of at least 2000 Lumens is therefore necessary.
  • For home cinema use in a bright room, the minimum value is 1500 Lumens. If the room is bright and spacious or for use in daylight, the minimum value is 2000 lumens.

In both cases, we recommend a brightness higher than 700 lumens.

#5 - The noise

The sound level of a video projector is usually measured in decibels (dB) and represents the noise emitted by the fan. The recommendations in sound differ from one manufacturer to another, but we note that a value lower than 30 dB would be ideal, while a discomfort is noted from 35 dB. Above 40 dB, the noise becomes intolerable. In any case, you will note that the sound emitted depends on the distance between the screen and the device, as well as the size of the room. But thanks to innovations, the noise can be considerably reduced thanks to the ECO mode.

#6 - Connections

The connectivity of a video projector is chosen according to the use you will make of it. You will basically need:

  • A cable connection that usually equips all projectors to connect your laptop, your smartphone or your tablet.
  • A USB port (or SD/SDHC port) so that you can project content immediately without having to make any connections.
  • A WiFi network connection option, available on the most powerful models, to connect the device to a computer or another without using a wire.
  • An HDMI connector for connecting Blu-ray players and projecting in Full HD.

#7 - The features

The number and advancement of features vary from one model to another, but almost the same are found in the majority of modern video projectors. Depending on the intended use, some features may be necessary in your video projector. These include:

  • A zoom function that allows you to adjust the image size by a certain percentage (10%, 20% or more) without having to move.
  • Lens Shift, to move the projection to either side.
  • Keystone correction, which is used to correct the shape of the image (horizontal or vertical correction) if it has taken a trapezoidal shape.
  • The Reverse Image function, which consists of inverting the image in order to fix the projector upside down on the ceiling or to carry out a rear projection.
  • Compatibility with all computer file formats to avoid blockages when reading them.

How to position a video projector?

To use your projector correctly, start by choosing its location. This will allow you to take advantage of the right angle, no matter what position you take. At the same time, you may need to make some adjustments, especially if you want to keep your projector in its place without ever having to move it again.

Make sure it doesn't interfere with your circulation in the room, but also that it's not bulky. You should also choose a stable and fixed piece of furniture as a support, and choose a location that is protected from light and dust so as not to damage it.

As for the height of the device, experts recommend a place of about 60 to 90 cm above the ground. The distance between the screen and the device depends on your needs, although too close, the images may be huge and sometimes even blurred. The wisest thing to do would be to place the device several meters away from the screen for a much better clarity.

In addition, it is recommended tochoose the location of your projector according to the length of its cord. Even if the use of an extension cord is still possible, it would also be wise to think about aesthetics so as not to clutter the floor with cables and wires.

The different types of projectors

Are you looking for the best video projector? Be careful, this choice is not trivial and although you are already aware of your needs, it is still essential to know the varieties. Let's take a look at the different types of video projectors!

LCD projectors

LCD (Liquid-Crystal Display) projectors use a liquid crystal panel that combines three basic colors: blue, green and red. The light from the lamp is split into three as it passes through the panel and the optical sum of the three images is then made to project the final image onto the screen. These are the cheapest models on the market and have relatively simple settings

.

Compact and light, these accessories are easily transportable. They offer an excellent color rendering, even in a brightly lit room. Also, LCD projectors are compatible with new and old technologies. The only drawbacks: the image quality is average and the contrast is low compared to other models, which is why this type of projector is not suitable for home cinema use. In addition, the fan frequently causes noise, which really reduces comfort. These devices are therefore better suited in the professional setting.

Tri-LCD projectors

Derived from

LCD versions, Tri-LCD projectors adopt the same principle at the level of projection. That said, their main difference is in their mechanism knowing that Tri-LCD are composed of three liquid crystal panels instead of one. The light emitted by the lamp passes through these three panels to project an image.

Tri-LCD projectors also differ from LCD models in the quality of their rendering.Unlike traditional versions, they can be used as home theater projectors

. Offering an adjustment and installation within reach of all, they offer optimal brightness, not to mention that their price remains affordable. Unfortunately, there are still some imperfections in their performance, namely the lack of black depth and dark colors.

DLP projectors

DLP (Digital Light Processing) projectors have micromirrors that take care of projecting images. Each micromirror corresponds to a pixel and may or may not send light from the lamp to the screen. In other words, these micromirrors define the brightness of each pixel from 0 to 100%. The rotation of a tricolor RGB filter then allows the image to be transmitted to the screen.

As the technology is advanced, you are sure to have an excellent quality image, with very good brightness and contrast

. Other advantages are that installation is almost instantaneous and the device is compact and easy to transport if you have to move around a lot. The difference with other models is immediately noticeable, as there is no grid effect or afterglow. Unfortunately, the sound is sometimes annoying not to mention that over time, the AEC (Rainbow Effect) can quickly disturb the view.

Laser projectors

It is

an improvement of DLP video projectors that consists in replacing the traditional lamp by a combination of blue colored lasers and a red colored LED. These video projectors use lasers similar to those of Blu-Ray players. It is therefore from these that a green light is created, thanks to a chemical reaction based on phosphorus.

You will notice that the life span oflasers and LEDs is 4 times longer than that of conventional bulbs

. On the other hand, you will be pleased to know that the lighting is instantaneous and the adjustment is fast. On the technical side, you benefit from a stable colorimetry, especially since the light source is almost unlimited in length. At the same time, the prices are inevitably expensive and the choices are more or less limited on the market.

3D projectors

You've always dreamed of transforming a small room in your house into a cinema room? It's impossible to go without 3D projectors. You just need to equip yourself with 3D glasses at the same time, so that you can see the images in 3D thanks to the technology of 3D video projectors. Their operation is similar to that of 3D TVs, which allows a complete immersion in the content.

The result: the image quality is simply impeccable thanks to the Full HD 1080p resolution. What's more, most of these models are compatible with 3D Blu-ray players. Of course, you'll need to prepare a fairly high budget in view of the expensive prices offered by retailers. You'll also need to think about the other equipment you'll need, which will involve other expenses. These include a Blu-ray player, an HDMI cable, etc.

Our advice

Consider installing thick, opaque curtains in the room so that you get an even sharper image during projection.

Video projector or pico projector?

Video projector

As you will have understood, a video projector is a device that has been specially designed to project photos or videos on a white support with a superior image quality. It is a device that has become essential, whether in the professional or personal field. You can turn your living room into a cinema with an excellent video projector and good quality speakers.

You can also use a video projector for professional or educational purposes: during a meeting, a presentation or any other activity requiring visual support. There are all kinds of projectors on the market, ranging from LCD and Tri-LCd versions to more powerful versions such as DLP or 3D.

Of course, this large catalogue of choices implies different prices and a large number of users even report that some of them are too expensive. Also, it is necessary to equip yourself with speakers to be able to enjoy an acceptable sound.

Picoprojector

Also known as mini-projector or micro-projector, the pico projector is a light and compact version of the traditional video projectors. The device is therefore smaller than the projectors we are used to and can therefore be carried anywhere.

Offered at an affordable price, it has quickly become a favorite gadget for globetrotters as well as people who are always on the go but need it for their work. As the pico projector is easy to plug in and start up, anyone can use it, even children.

Unfortunately, it is essential to have speakers on hand to enjoy good sound quality. Experienced users also complain about the noise that this type of projector causes. As for image quality, it should ideally be used in a very dark room.

Verdict

Whatever your choice, you should know that these two devices have exactly the same purpose, which is none other than to project images on a screen or a white wall. If you want to set up a specific room as a viewing room, the purchase of a video projector is better suited to your needs. However, if you move around a lot, opt for a pico projector.

Why buy a video projector?

Contrary to popular belief, a projector is not a luxury item and certainly not a waste of money. If you don't have your own projector yet, here are the 8 reasons why you should consider using this technology every day!

A video projector is less expensive than a large screen TV

The projector market offers several models with different performances and features and therefore at different prices. You can buy a projector for less than €600 or for more than €3,500.

But what's certain is that getting a quality projector will save you a lot more money than buying a large TV with a full HD screen. The latter costs between €1,500 and €3,000 or more. However, for less than €1,500, you can buy a top-of-the-range projector that's as good as the big TVs.

A video projector is very comfortable to use

Very easy to install and then handle, the projector offers a great comfort of use that makes the user experience more pleasant. The basic settings are extremely easy and you can quickly learn to access the advanced features. In addition, all you need is a remote control to take control remotely and change the settings to suit your needs.

A video projector is not cumbersome

Usually, you need a place that is large enough to accommodate the sometimes gigantic and imposing design of a TV, even if it is a flat screen model. A video projector, on the other hand, doesn't require as much space. In fact, you can project the content either on the wall or on a canvas. In the latter case, you simply fold the device on itself to make room.

The best part is that you can mount the projector anywhere, even on the ceiling. And since it is a small device that weighs no more than 5 kg, it can be moved without any difficulty.

A video projector immerses you in another world

Watching a movie with a video projector guarantees complete immersion and the cinema effect. This is possible thanks to the way the projector displays images: realistic colours, large size, 3D effect if the device offers this technology... Moreover, by staying in a dark room, you will even have the impression of being in a cinema.

A video projector is ideal for gamers

A projector is certainly better than a traditional screen when it comes to gaming. By connecting your PS3 or Xbox 360 to a 720p or Full HD projector, you'll be able to enjoy a pleasant and realistic experience.

A video projector allows you to use 3D technology

At around €1,500, you can easily get a Full HD 3D projector with outstanding quality. On top of that, a pair of 3D glasses will give you free access to the advanced features of Blu-ray technology, both for watching 3D content and for gaming.

A video projector can be moved at will

It will undoubtedly be impossible to carry your TV with you anywhere, especially if you want to watch movies with friends. Fortunately, there are some very compact and lightweight projectors that can go anywhere with you. With a few movies or video games, you'll definitely not get bored!

A video projector is essential for professional and educational purposes

If the interest of the video projector is undeniable in terms of home cinema or gaming, it is just as much in other contexts, such as professional or educational. Indeed, a video projector offering a great luminosity will allow you to make an excellent presentation in a very lit room. Optimal visibility, large images and video projection with good sound quality are within your reach during training sessions, meetings or even during academic courses.

The best brands of projectors

In our opinion, the best brands of projectors in 2022 are :

Epson
BenQ
Bomaker
Acer
Philips

Known to everyone in the electronics world since 1942, Epson has remained one of the leading designers of video projectors for decades. It is a manufacturer of electronic equipment that is mainly aimed at professionals, although its products are also suitable for individuals. The Japanese brand stands out from the competition thanks to its worldwide intervention through innovative articles that constantly aim for perfection and superior quality.

A Taiwanese company founded in 1984, BenQ operates in the digital equipment market and offers a variety of products ranging from interactive touchscreens to speakers and monitors. Amidst its wide variety of designs, there are also projectors of all types that are now popular with a wide audience. Innovative and concerned with aesthetics as well as performance, BenQ has definitely proven its creativity.

A very recent brand, Bomaker has been making its mark in the audio-visual entertainment industry since 2015. It provides a wide range of high quality audio and video devices that are taking a considerable place in the market. You will have unique audio-visual experiences because of their authenticity.

Founded in 1976, Acer is by all means one of the biggest leaders in the electrical market today and its slogan "Explore beyond the limits" says a lot about its capabilities. The large Taiwanese firm has undergone several turnarounds in renovating the majority of its digital equipment, and projectors are no exception to the rule. With powerful technological products that align with everyone's needs and budget, Acer definitely remains a brand to be favored.

Who says electronic and digital equipment necessarily says Philips! It's hard to put the brand aside given the wide variety of products that bear the logo, in all fields including that of video projectors. At the heart of innovation, the Dutch technology company is constantly getting closer to the public to better meet their needs, and that's what makes it so strong.

What is the price for a projector

The diagram below will help you to get an idea of the typical prices for each price range (entry-level, mid-range and high-end).

However, more expensive does not necessarily mean better.

We therefore advise you to always consult our ranking before deciding, rather than blindly relying on price ranges.

Mid-range
500 £ to 1000 £
High-end

Tips

Choose your screen carefully.

While some users may opt for a white wall as a screen, others prefer to use a real white canvas for this purpose. If this is your case, you should know that there is a wide range of them, and of different sizes, on the market. However, movie buffs and connoisseurs recommend gray screens, which provide a higher contrast.

A short throw projector for a narrow room.

Short-throw projectors are designed to be placed within a few inches of the screen and are therefore ideal for small spaces. In conference rooms, small bedrooms, or any other narrow area, it would be best to lean toward this version to maximize the result in terms of quality.

Plan the audio before you buy a projector.

In

general, video projectors are very good at video and pretty bad at audio, and in most cases, that's because the manufacturers assume you'll be bringing your own audio solution. So, before you buy your projection equipment, think about where you're going to place it as well as the audio solution. Consider, for example, using a sound bar or even speakers.

Regularly remove dust from the ventilation duct.

As dust can quickly accumulate in the fan of your video projector, it is crucial to clean this duct regularly. Do it at least every couple of months, even if you don't use it frequently. By doing so, you won't risk losing image quality and you'll systematically prevent the unit from overheating.

Be sure to maintain the lens.

Make sure

the lens stays clean and free of dust and fingerprints, both on the front and back of the lens, the goal being to always have a clear, sharp image during every use

.

FAQ

What is the best projector ?

The best projector depends on your needs and your budget. Read our buying guide to find out which products are the best at the moment.

What accessories should I use for my projector?

As far as accessories are concerned, we generally find basic equipment such as wiring, remote control and the screen. The latter depends on the tastes and needs of everyone, because the wall is clearly sufficient to act as a screen. However, to make sure that your video projector works as well as possible, you can combine it with other accessories, sometimes optional, such as a sound bar, speakers, an anti-theft device, laser pointers or ceiling mounts.

How does a video projector work?

The functioning of a video projector depends on the technology that equips it. The best known are the LCD, Tri-LCD and DLP models. The first two use liquid crystal panels through which the lamp light passes, while the last one uses an assortment of micromirrors that define the pixels.

What is the real purpose of a video projector?

A video projector is simply used to project visual content onto a screen. It can be video or image and is used to view movies, photos, files or even to play games on an oversized screen.

How to clean a video projector?

To clean a projector, there is nothing easier than using a bulb to effectively remove dust. Avoid chemical cleaning products as much as possible to avoid damaging the device. If traces of dirt remain, a simple microfiber cloth or a slightly damp cloth will do the trick.
