How to choose your gyropod

Here is a selection of important criteria not to be overlooked when investing in a high quality gyropod.

#1 - The type of use of the gyropod

You can choose between an urban or an all-terrain gyropod. The urban version is mostly ideal for pavement or sidewalk use, while the off-road version is more suitable for rough paths and paved streets.

#2 - Speed

Most gyropod models sold on the market today run at around 15 to 20km/h. However, if you pay the price, it is quite possible to get a gyropod that can go up to 30km/h.

#3 - Engine power

The performance of the gyropod is ensured by the power of its motor. This power varies from one model to another: a little more than a hundred watts for the least powerful models and more than 2000 watts for the most powerful all-terrain. A powerful motor is best suited for a gyropod that often travels on rough and cracked roads, while a medium-powered motor is best suited for roads in good condition. If you usually ride on flat terrain, a 500 to 600 watt motor will do.

Traveling by plane with your gyropod

Some airlines allow gyropods with a battery power not exceeding 160Wh or 8g of lithium on board their aircraft. For others, gyropods are strictly forbidden in order to prevent any risk of battery implosion.

#4 - Age and weight of the user

There

are a variety of models and sizes of gyropods suitable for all ages and weights on the market today. Some models require a minimum weight of 48kg while others can be driven by a user weighing only 20kg. Based on these two criteria, choose the power and performance level of the gyropod accordingly for the sake of user safety.

#5 - Autonomy

Prefer lithium batteries which show an excellent resistance and a longer life compared to lead batteries. The autonomy of a gyropod is generally between 15 and 30 kilometers, but with some more expensive models, it can exceed 40 kilometers.

#6 - The features

The features available for gyropods are numerous such as the possibility to connect your machine and your smartphone via bluetooth, the GPS system or the anti-theft lock. There are also very stylish gyropod models that are equipped with speakers.

Comfort criteria

Handlebars: For beginners and people with reduced mobility, a gyropod with adjustable handlebars is more suitable. However, as you get comfortable with your gyropod, you will quickly realize that the handlebars are more for resting your arms than for orienting the gyropod for urban use.

The platform: There is nothing like a footrest platform that is wide enough to allow you to adopt a comfortable posture once you are on board your gyropod.

The wheels: The wheels and their size guarantee a comfortable and stable ride. These include puncture-proof rubber tires. If your gyropod is large enough, you should choose 8 or 10 inch wheels. If you're planning to ride around town, 6.5-inch wheels will do the trick. But if you're going to easily tackle snowy or slushy trails, 8-inch wheels are more appropriate. As for the 10-inch wheels, they are mainly used for off-road gyropods. They have a better grip on rough roads and easily handle difficult trails. Beyond 10 inches, the wheels offer a greater driving comfort.

Good to know

A gyropod is reliable when it complies with the CE standards which ensure that the gyropod meets the Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSR). In addition to the CE standards, there are other standards. The UN38.3 and MSDS standards that guarantee the reliability of the battery. The RoHS standard which aims to limit the use of lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) above 0.1% and cadmium above 0.01% in the materials of the gyropod's electrical and electronic equipment. The UL2272 standard which guarantees the reliability of the gyropod charger.

Gyropod or electric scooter?

At present, gyropods and electric scooters are gaining popularity among people of all ages. Indeed, these two motorized devices have the advantage of being both environmentally friendly and optimizing mobility in urban areas. But which one is the most advantageous?

Gyropods

Gyropods are motorized devices that generally offer more comfort to users. They also offer more features: some models are equipped with speakers allowing the user to play music from his smartphone via the Bluetooth system.

In addition to this asset, some gyropods can be locked remotely and are equipped with a GPS. In terms of price, gyropods are considerably more expensive than electric scooters. The most powerful versions of gyropods can cost up to 3,000 euros or more, whereas a quality electric scooter rarely costs more than 1,500 euros.

Electric scooters

On the other hand, electric scooters offer a much greater range. Indeed, lighter, with their standard weight of 12 kg, they can travel up to 45 km while gyropods, heavier, generally go up to 25 - 30 km.

Verdict

The choice of the electric scooter or the gyropod is entirely up to you. However, if you are looking for modernity, power and manoeuvrability, we advise you to look at the gyropods. On the other hand, if you are more interested in an inexpensive vehicle that offers greater autonomy, an electric scooter will suffice.

Tips

Train before you ride your gyro

In order to prevent falls and enjoy a better ride on your gyropod, it is essential to practice before jumping in. To move forward, simply lean forward slightly. Similarly, to go backwards, lean backwards. To turn, bend to the right or left side. To accelerate, lean forward gradually, and to brake, do the opposite. Once you have mastered the handling of the machine, you will be ready to ride around town.

Wear proper safety equipment when riding a scooter

To

ensure a safe ride on your gyropod, remember to wear a helmet, elbow pads, gloves, and knee pads. Remember to wear a fluorescent armband or retro-reflective vest at night or when visibility is low.

Keep your tires at the right pressure

At

least once a fortnight, remember to check the inflation of your gyropod's tires and make sure it does not exceed the recommended level. For this, refer to the technical data sheet of the machine. A good pressure will ensure a good grip on the ground, a good damping and a better autonomy to your gyropod. For your information, know that in general, the optimal pressure for inflating the tires of a gyropod is 3.5 bars.

Protect the battery of your gyropod

In order to

enjoy a good autonomy and a functional battery as long as possible, use an inverter when you charge the battery of your gyropod. This will give it optimal protection against current instabilities and during heavy weather. After each use and even when you are not using your scooter, always plug it into a power outlet. Do not leave it unplugged for more than fifteen days.

Regularly check the road holding of your gyropod

If

you feel that your gyropod seems to pull to the left or to the right on a straight surface, check the pressure of your tires because it is probably not the same

.

To

properly clean your gyropod, wash it with mild soap and non-limestone water. Avoid high-pressure and high-temperature jets that can deteriorate its seals. Also, make sure not to spray too much on the power outlet and definitely do not use products that protect and polish rubber, plastic, and vinyl surfaces.
