6 Lictin learning layers

Ideal from birth

Despite their limited absorbency, the 6 Lictin cloth diapers will be great to start with. Supplied with 6 inserts, they adapt to the age and morphology of baby, whatever the sex.

25,59 £ on Amazon

These 6 Lictin diapers are made of TPU, microfiber and bamboo fiber, a material known to be very healthy. However, they do not completely absorb pee unless you use 2 inserts. We understand better the presence of 6 rather fine inserts in the kit. As for waterproofness, they are perfect even if thinner than other brands.

These cloth diapers are one size only, so they can evolve. They adapt well to baby's morphology, despite a certain fragility. We advise to handle the snaps with care. We like the design that prevents the sagging of the diaper. The fruity and colorful style will undoubtedly attract baby's attention.

How to choose your cloth diaper

Whether they are sold alone, in starter kit, trial kit or complete kit, cloth diapers must meet certain requirements. Notably efficiency against leaks, ease of wearing and washing, or cost.

#1 - The absorbent material

Cloth diapers can vary from one model to another. And to meet certain requirements, it is advisable to consider the elements composing the diaper to guarantee the comfort of the baby and to simplify its use. However, you could have the choice between basic models, starter kits, trial kits or complete kits.

It could be a simple cloth diaper with a protective cover or a classic cloth diaper preformed to fit the child's body and with a cover. This last one is made up of elastics enclosing the thighs and the size with velcros, pressures or sometimes of laces for the closing.

We can also have a system of diaper sewn to the protective panties or a hybrid system with an absorbent part nested or assembled by scratch to the waterproof panties. There will also be models with a cloth diaper but with an anti-leakage structure in a small pod hosting a washable or disposable insert.

#2 - The size

The diaper cover is the part in direct contact with the baby's bottom placed on the cloth diaper. It contributes thus comfort of the child. The most common type of liner is a rectangle of fleece fabric that provides a dry feel for the baby. Types of reusable fabric that can be washed with the rest of the diaper. They even allow for easy stool removal and define a much more durable look.

However, liners can also be made of cellulose or viscose. Cellulose liners are usually made from wood and are biodegradable. As for the viscose liners, they are made from a plastic material of vegetable origin and considered as artificial silk.

#3 - The attachment and accessories

At this level, it will be mainly a question of the absorbent elements and which will define all the utility of the cloth diaper. A priori, the choice will depend mainly on your habits and your requirements, especially in terms of practicality for washing and convenience of the baby.

Generally made of fabric, diapers and inserts are available in a wide variety of materials. However, it is preferable and more practical to choose a natural, organic or ecological textile such as cotton, bamboo, hemp, tencel or even GOTS or Oeko-Tex labeled microfiber. These materials each have their advantages and disadvantages.

Hemp and bamboo are the most efficient materials in terms of absorption and bacteria limitation. But that doesn't mean that cotton, tencel or microfiber don't have absorption capabilities. That said, to keep your baby comfortable, choose a soft texture that will keep your baby's bottom dry with a waterproof and leakproof cover.

Bad smells

Washable or disposable, a diaper is still a diaper: once filled, it won't smell like a rose! So don't wait too long before washing it. By equipping yourself with a bucket, instead of a trash can, and a washing net, you will limit bad smells. You can also add drops of essential oil to help mask the odors.

#4 - Color and patterns

In relation to the age, size and weight of your baby, the size of the cloth diaper represents a non-negligible characteristic in the choice. In this regard, it will be essential to base your choice on the weight because some models and sizes do not correspond and offer little comfort to your child.

As an indication, a size 1 cloth diaper will correspond to a baby from 0 to 3 months old with a weight around 3 to 7 kg. The size 2 will be adapted to a child from 3 to 6 months with a weight ranging from 4 to 9 kg. At more than 6 months, you will start with the size 3 or "Midi" which will correspond to a child from 8 to 12 kg. From 12 to 18 months, a size 4 or maxi diaper will be suitable for a 12 to 18 kg baby. And finally size 5 or Junior will be suitable for more than 3 years old with a weight of 17 to 25 kg and is mostly used at night for children who still wet the bed.

#5 - Cumulative costs

We remember the folded cloth diapers acting as cloth diapers and using safety pins to close them. As cloth diapers have evolved and grown, the type of fastening and closure is giving way to more efficient and secure systems.

Depending on the model, there are now three types of fasteners and closures, including velcro, snap and snappy. The latter adopts a T-shape with a self-gripping aspect to close around diapers and diapers to be folded.

Some cloth diapers can adopt a unique size with several adjustment systems in velcro or snap to adjust to the morphology of the child. This type of system is designed to define a standard size that can be used from birth to potty training.

Basic and optional structure of a cloth diaper

Understanding how a cloth diaper works and what it looks like is essential to using it.

To ensure its function, a cloth diaper will have to be composed of an absorbent part and a waterproof part. The absorbent part is usually a diaper, an insert or an absorbent core. This element can be removable or sewn into the diaper. When choosing, it will depend on your preferences and expectations. As for the waterproof part, it will be defined by a protection acting as a barrier against leakage.

But apart from this basic structure, cloth diapers can vary according to the optional elements to guarantee more comfort to the baby. At this level, we can mention the protective layer that covers the baby's buttocks against humidity and facilitates the evacuation of stools during diaper changes. It could also be a question of an additional part called lining or booster, reinforcing the absorbent capacity of the layer while limiting the risks of leakage.

How to wash a cloth diaper ?

Before washing the diapers, it is important to choose the right detergent, avoiding products containing fabric softeners, perfumes, optical brighteners, phosphates and enzymes. These types of products can adversely affect the absorbency of cloth diapers. It is also recommended to wash only 20 diapers at the same time in a washing machine.

Before washing, pre-wash the diapers in cold water to remove stool. Note that immediate hot water washing will tend to leave stains. After the pre-wash, proceed to a machine wash on a temperature of 40 to 60 °C maximum in order to keep the best conditions for the fabric fibers. Rinse generously with clean water to remove accumulated detergents. Concerning the drying, prefer the drying in the open air under the sun to favor the longevity of your cloth diapers.

Sometimes, stains resist to washing and get dirty with time. To clean cloth diapers, there is an easier way to do it. We are talking about white vinegar and soda crystals, known for their cleaning, degreasing and disinfecting properties. To do this, place all your diapers in a basin or bucket and add hot water until they are immersed. Then, pour half a glass of white vinegar with 2 tablespoons of soda crystals while mixing the whole while letting it act one night.

To finish, you will have to put the cloth diapers in the washing machine between 40 and 60°C or just wash them by hand with a good rinse. However, this process can alter the diapers if it is done every time they are washed. The best would be to wash the diapers from time to time in order to preserve the absorption.

Where to buy your cloth diapers ?

Buying cloth diapers online is cheaper than buying them in a department store. Moreover, the choice is just as large. There are even models exclusively available on the Internet. Delivery will be at the seller's expense. You will be able to consult users' opinions, ask for advice from the technical support, and even return the diapers if you are not satisfied.

Some brands sell their cloth diapers directly via their website. Others offer them on online sales platforms. On this subject, Amazon is the best place to find good deals. You will find most of the interesting brands there. And stocks are regularly replenished.

The different types of cloth diapers

Cloth diapers come in different models depending on the layout of the absorbent and waterproof cloth elements. There are 5 types of cloth diapers on the market.

This type of diaper consists of a separate diaper that acts as the absorbent part and a protective cover or waterproof overlay. The absorbent diaper runs over the entire surface with elastics at the thighs and waist to adjust perfectly to the baby's morphology. And to meet the anti-leak structure, the diaper will be topped with a waterproof part called the protective panty well adjusted.

Advantages:

Pleasant to wear and very soft for baby's skin, the classic cloth diaper has a very high absorption capacity. It is also very appreciated for its preformed architecture that follows the baby's profile. This results in a very reliable anti-leakage system that prevents stool leaks.

Disadvantages :

Although ultra powerful and very soft, the classic cloth diaper has the defect to present a much more voluminous structure by its arrangement in 2 times. Among its weaknesses, note that it takes time to dry.

Who is it for ?

Efficient, the classic cloth diaper is recommended for the night and the naps. It is appropriate for the infants, for the period when your small end is at the stage of the big pee. But make sure that the diaper does not go beyond the diaper cover to guarantee your child's comfort.

Classic diaper with cover

The TE1 cloth diaper, also known as an all-in-one diaper, is similar in appearance to a disposable diaper. Unlike disposables, the TE1 is made of fabric. It has a structure that combines the absorbent part with the waterproof outer cover. The diaper integrates a diaper with an absorbent insert to perform its functions as a diaper. In fact, the outer waterproof part will be sewn to the diaper which will integrate an absorbent insert.

Advantages:

The TE1 diaper has the advantage of being simple and easy to use with its system gathering all the essential elements in a single module. Very appreciated by its thinness and its lightness, it requires only very little handling at the change for the great comfort of the child.

Disadvantages :

Of rather fine appearance and practical to put on, a TE1 cloth diaper also has the defect to have a longer drying. Moreover, at each change, it is imperative to replace the whole diaper as a disposable diaper.

Who is it for ?

The TE1 cloth diaper is very practical for outings and trips, especially for parents in a hurry and novices. Although there are daytime and nighttime models, the use of this type of diaper is more recommended during the day.

Washable diaper TE1

It is a hybrid model between TE1 and TE2 cloth diapers. It has the same architecture as a TE1 diaper but with a pocket for one or more removable absorbent inserts. This type of diaper is made of a waterproof pant with a soft inner part and a pocket dedicated to receive an absorbent element or insert. It can sometimes be called a TE1 pocket diaper because of its design.

Advantages:

A pocket diaper has the advantage of being made of dry-effect fabric for baby's comfort. Once fitted, it looks like a disposable diaper, easy to use, but with the possibility to modulate the absorption by playing on the aspect of the inserts. It also has the advantage of drying faster and less expensive than a TE1 by detaching the insert from its pocket.

Disadvantages :

Requiring some handling during assembly, the pocket diaper has the drawback of replacing the entire diaper at each change. The majority of this type of model also has this disadvantage of size which can be used only starting from 4 kg.

Who is it for?

According to the reviews, pocket diapers are mostly appreciated in daycares and nurseries for its more practical aspect. They will also find their place in families looking for simplicity in the daily use of cloth diapers.

Washable diaper TE2

The TE2 or all-in-two diaper is composed of a waterproof part on which is fixed an absorbent insert maintained by a flap, snap buttons or by scratchs. Used like a TE1 diaper, this one differs by a two-part layout where the waterproof part can be used several times by replacing only the insert at each change.

Advantages :

The TE2 diaper is more economical. It allows to keep the waterproof part if it is not soiled and to change only the absorbent element during each change. Its design allows for one or more absorbent inserts to boost its absorption capacity. This is an advantage to modulate the absorption capacity by changing the material of the absorbent part according to the needs. Finally, the TE2 diaper is quicker to dry after washing.

Disadvantages :

The TE2 diaper requires more handling during use, which could discourage young parents. It also requires more time to assemble the elements and layers. For some models, the removable structure insert will tend to move. Therefore, it is better to use the diaper with a protective cover to keep your little one's bottom dry.

Who is it for?

A versatile solution, the TE2 cloth diaper can be used as a TE1 cloth diaper by assembling the parts in advance. Also suitable for daytime use, this type of diaper was designed for parents looking for a more economical alternative. It will be very effective and practical for babies who pee a lot and have liquid stools.

Washable diaper TE3

It is an improved version of the TE2, also called hybrid diaper. It is composed of three separable parts: an absorbent element, a waterproof element and a panty that holds it all together. The absorbent part is a washable or disposable insert that attaches to a waterproof carrier or hammock, which in turn will be attached or topped by a protective panty.

Advantages:

Entirely removable, the TE3 diaper has a reusable cover and a reusable nacelle at will. It also allows to vary the absorption by playing on the materials and the thicknesses of the inserts. It even allows to alternate a washable insert and a biodegradable insert. The TE3 diaper also allows to vary the absorption by playing on the material and the thickness of the inserts for a use in daytime as well as night. Finally, the TE3 dries faster in the open air.

Disadvantages :

But despite its advantages, the TE3 cloth diaper requires much more handling and more preparations at the time of the change. It must be said that these types of cloth diapers are less present on the market. And for the handling, it requires a certain know-how and a better organization.

Who is it for ?

Useful in all circumstances, the TE3 cloth diaper can be used day and night by adopting the appropriate inserts. It offers the best compromise between cloth and disposable diapers, which makes it an excellent alternative for parents who hesitate between the two. It is also suitable for vacations or weekends to reduce the amount of dirty laundry.

Why buy a cloth diaper?

Protecting your baby

The worrying revelations about the presence of toxic substances in disposable diapers have made them obsolete. From now on, they are being replaced by cloth diapers. Unlike disposable diapers, cloth diapers are not harmful to the baby's skin. No benzol, dioxin, sodium polyacrylate... By opting for cloth diapers, you will reduce the risk of allergies and diaper rash for your child.

Saving money

There are several interests linked to the use of cloth diapers. Among them, the most obvious is the savings you will make. As mentioned above (link), it will be 400 euros on average. Moreover, if you decide not to have babies anymore, you can always sell them. This is not the case for used disposable diapers.

Protecting the environment

As we all know, disposable diapers are far from being ecological. Their absorbent material takes 500 years to degrade. However, the French use a phenomenal quantity of them, which represents 40% of the waste of households with a child under 2 years old. For the planet and the generations to come, we must switch to cloth diapers.

For a better learning experience for your baby

The use of cloth diapers contributes to baby's learning by promoting his personal development. As time goes by, the child will know if his diaper needs to be changed and he will signal it. Gradually, he will not like the feeling of a wet diaper anymore, then he will ask to be taken to the toilet or to the potty, to be more and more independent.

Subsidies offered

One of the main arguments of the detractors of cloth diapers is the price. You should know that some municipalities offer subsidies to cloth diaper users, because of their ecological vocation. We can mention Morlaix or Evin Malmaison.

The best brands of cloth diapers

In our opinion, the best brands of cloth diapers in 2022 are :

Bambino Mio
B'bies
Hamac
Popolini
Lictin

Bambino Mio is a British brand of cloth diapers and baby products. They have been around for more than 20 years and only offer products that are perfectly ecological. Their nappies are very popular and are at the top of the sales. There are all sizes, whether they are TE1, TE2 or TE3. And the designs are always very attractive.

B'bies has made zero waste its main concern. That's why the brand offers TE2 cloth diapers made of bamboo or microfiber. It also designs accessories for transporting and cleaning its diapers, as well as bibs, plates, breastfeeding pillows and menstrual protection for moms. It is a brand "committed and sassy", as their slogan says.

Hamac is a French brand specialized in cloth diapers with microfiber absorbent material. Classic, TE1 or TE2, the cloth diapers of this brand have an undeniable charm and practicality. They also make accessories for cloth diapers as well as bath diapers. It's quite expensive, but the quality is there.

For 25 years, this brand has been producing and marketing healthy, durable cloth diapers at a reasonable price. Known for their eye-catching design and ergonomics, Popolini diapers are designed to meet the real needs of parents and their children.

Lictin has a strong presence in the field of childcare and offers various items for babies. These range from washable diapers to hats and socks for toddlers. Not to mention sleeping bags, baby carriers, slings and bibs. In addition, their products are sold at a more than reasonable price. If you are on a tight budget, Lictin cloth diapers will suit you, they are excellent entry level diapers.

Tips

Avoid hypoallergenic products to clean cloth diapers

After delivery, do not use the diaper immediately. Make it softer by soaking it in clean water overnight. And to increase its absorption capacity, wash it at least 3 times in a row without drying it in water at 40°C, with a little detergent in the first wash. Note that for hemp or bamboo diapers, it will take about 10 washes to reach the optimal absorption capacity. But only wash diaper covers once and never soak diapers in boiling water.

Prepare your changing area well

The best way to prevent diaper rash is of course to always keep your baby clean and dry. It is also recommended not to tighten the diaper too much and to adopt air-permeable pants so that the skin can breathe. And finally, to avoid irritation, try applying a layer of ointment containing petroleum jelly or zinc oxide after each bath before putting on the diaper.

Limit the use of creams and wipes

When you dress your little one, make sure the diaper is not compressed to avoid leaks. For your bodysuits, choose a size up or opt for bodysuits dedicated to cloth diapers. To be more secure, it is better to have a roll of thick protective paper or polar fleece for breastfed babies. Similarly, to store dirty diapers, a bin or pail with a lid will be a good idea. And for outings, try to equip yourself with a waterproof diaper bag.

Adjust the diaper properly

Pediatricians, pediatricians and dermatologists agree that babies' skin is very sensitive, unlike an adult's. Because of this, be very careful when choosing laundry detergents so as not to cause an allergy. Consider using white vinegar to remove bad odors. And remember that a poorly rinsed diaper will cause yellowish stains to appear on its surface.

Choose appropriate clothing

Ideally, your changing table should be located near the toilet. This allows for immediate evacuation of stool with the help of the diaper cover. It's also a good idea to install a toilet shower so you can conveniently rinse away any spills, if needed. Then, all you'll need to do is place the diaper in a pail while you wait for it to be washed.

Creams and liniments clog cloth diapers unnecessarily if you use them frequently, and wipes create additional waste. That's why it's best to opt for the simplest method of cleaning baby's bottom. This involves using a washcloth, mild soap and water. If needed, you can also use micellar water.

To best avoid leaks, make sure the inserts and liners don't stick out of the diaper. Next, place your baby on his or her back and lift the leg to check that the diaper is not yawning. However, when you close the diaper, remember to leave a space to slip two fingers through the waistband. This way, your baby won't feel too tight.

Keep in mind that a cloth diaper holds liquids without gelling, unlike a disposable diaper. Therefore, if it is too compressed, it will release fluids and cause leaks. It is therefore essential to choose soft, flowing clothing so as not to squeeze the diaper. Moreover, these types of clothes are better adapted to free-motion.
