How to choose your action cam

A sports camera must have many qualities, in accordance with the activities of its user. It must provide high definition images, resist shocks and extreme conditions. It will be light and will follow all the evolutions of the sportsman.

#1 - Resolution and image quality

A higher number of pixels guarantees a perfect image sharpness. The best results are obtained with a resolution that varies from 720p to 1440p. Even more advanced in terms of image quality, the camera operating in 4K mode ensures a professional rendering.

The fluidity of the image is measured in frames per second (FPS). For slow to moderate speed movement, you'll want a camera with HD or Full HD resolution, 30 FPS smoothness, and a median angle. More hectic action requires Full HD or 4K resolution with smoothness of 60 to 120 FPS.

#2 - Adaptation to extreme conditions

Waterproofing

:

sports cameras can be equipped with a protective housing that prevents water from entering the camera. The camera with housing can withstand a descent under water up to 60m depending on the model. For cameras without housing, some models can be used in diving to a depth of 3m.

Shock resistance:

the action cam will be resistant to shocks and extreme conditions. However, some models of sports cameras do not cope well with the various incidents of course (speed, bumps, gravel projection ...). The camera with housing will always be the safest choice.

#3 - Weight and shape

The

sports camera is often attached to a helmet or a visor. Its weight must therefore be as light as possible, so as not to hinder you in the action. Sports cameras are generally of a weight that varies from 100gr to 200gr. Some mini-cameras even come down to 30gr.

Another point not to be neglected is the shape of the camera. It must be in harmony with the helmet to provide an accurate image of the action. It is up to the user to choose the shape of his action cam, rectangular or cylindrical.

#4 - The features

The

screen:

the action cam miniaturized to the extreme does not have a screen. The viewing is done using a tablet. Some models are equipped with touch screens to view the images before transmission to the computer.

Wi-Fi:

the cameras without screen are all equipped with Wi-Fi, which retransmits the images directly to the smartphone. It is possible to share files, and to broadcast live the best moments. The Wi-Fi allows a remote activation of the action camera from the smartphone.

GPS:

the integrated GPS option is appreciated by those who love challenges. This system allows you to transmit the route of a course, calculate the speed of execution, and know the figures of the difference in altitude.

HDMI-USB output

: sports cameras equipped with an HDMI-USB port can be connected directly to a screen (computer,...).

#5 - The options

The

image stabilizer:

users of sports cameras are often very shaken. To get a stable image quality, you need to use autofocus and image stabilizer. The optical version is more satisfactory than the digital version.

Burst mode:

Burst mode allows you to take shots at an explosive pace.

The option of viewing in slow motion: to admire the images in slow motion, there is a special format, the 4K ultra slow motion. The quality of the high-resolution images goes up to 400P for 4K Ultra HD, and can reach 800P for 4K Full HD.

How to attach his action cam?

There are several ways to attach the action cam, on a helmet, the handlebars of your bike, and even on a musical instrument.

On the chest: use a harness to secure the camera. It simply slips on over your clothes and has a slot for attaching it to your chest. It is recommended that you stand up straight, so that the camera can film the landscape properly.

With a pole: some models of pole with articulated arm can be folded. The presence of a remote control is even more convenient to control the camera during the action. A good trick to take selfies at will!

Fixed on the helmet: the action cams can be worn on the head, using an adhesive or suction cup attachment. The use of a special headband also allows you to keep your hands free when your hands are busy.

For an on-board camera effect: Here, the mounting system can be attached directly to the handlebars, under the seat or on the roof of the car, the windshield or even your surfboard.

Using a tripod: this system is very practical for filming still shots. The tripod can also be hand-held.

To capture your moments in music: attach the GoPro directly to your keyboard, a trumpet, your guitar, and let your inspiration carry you!

Why should I buy an action cam?

For exceptional shots.

The main difference between an action cam and other cameras is the fluidity of the images, regardless of the movements during the shooting. With an action cam, you won't miss any details on specific moments thanks to slow-motion video and photo burst options.

It follows you everywhere.

The action cam accompanies you in all your expeditions thanks to its compact size. You will keep unforgettable memories of your adventures by relying on a quality action cam.

It adapts to all environments.

The action cam is a field camera. You can take it with you on your hikes, excursions and even for your aquatic leisure activities since it has the added advantage of being waterproof.

Its design is resistant.

As a sports camera, the action cam is also characterized by a robust design, which does not flinch at the slightest collision. Most of the time, it is equipped with a casing that protects it from the hazards of the place where you intend to use it.

Easy connectivity.

The action cam scores points for having modern, easy-to-use connectivity options. You can easily view your live recordings or edit instantly.

Tips

16:9 vs 4:3.

The default image sensor of most action cameras is in 4:3 format. This format allows you to capture as many images as possible, but in a vertical field of view. However, the 16:9 sensor will crop some of the video your camera captures! Shooting in 4:3 maximizes the vertical field of view and makes it more square than 16:9. This results in more of your video capturing the surrounding environment, thus more dynamic, allowing you to crop the video more freely during post-processing.

PAL or NTSC.

The difference between PAL and NTSC is that PAL shoots at 25/50/100 frames/second while NTSC shoots at 30/60/120 frames/second. Different parts of the world use different lighting frequencies and if you are shooting at night or somewhere with artificial light, be it TV, lamps, LEDs and you realize that there is flickering, it is most likely because you are in the wrong shooting mode.

Improve the quality of the audio.

Buy a foam windscreen for your action camera or an external microphone that can be easily attached to your GoPro or action camera.

Low light optimization.

First, increase your ISO settings to the maximum. Second, turn down the frame rate as low as possible (30 frames per second). Lower frame rates make for a brighter shot, because light has more time to reach the sensor.

Choose different viewpoints.

Try to always shoot from different perspectives. Using the same type of shots from the same angles can get boring very quickly. So, try to vary the viewpoints.
