This is in direct contrast to a traditional LCD TV, which relies on a separate backlight to generate light that then passes through a layer of pixels.
Other advantages of OLED are that the panels are lighter and thinner than a typical LCD/LED arrangement, viewing angles tend to be considerably wider and response times can be extremely fast. One drawback is that OLEDs are relatively expensive to produce. Prices are becoming more realistic - largely thanks to LG (currently the only producer of OLED panels for TVs) selling panels to other manufacturers such as Sony, Panasonic and Philips, increasing both the quantity produced and the competition in stores - but OLED TVs still tend to be a bit more expensive than standard LCD models. That said, Samsung's QLEDs tend to be closer to OLEDs in price than LCDs.
The only major TV manufacturer that has not adopted OLED technology is Samsung, which instead promotes a competing technology called QLED. QLED stands for Quantum-dot Light-Emitting Diode, which, in theory at least, has a lot in common with OLED, especially in that each pixel can emit its own light. In this case, thanks to quantum dots, tiny semiconductor particles only a few nanometers. These quantum dots are able to give off incredibly bright, vibrant and diverse colors, even more than OLED.
The problem is that the quantum dots used in current QLED TVs don't actually emit their own light. Instead, they simply have light from a backlight shining through them, the same way an LCD layer does on standard LCD/LED TVs. Quantum dots still improve color vibrancy and control on the LCD, but it's not exactly the game-changing next-generation technology that Samsung has always suggested with its QLED brand.
The 55-inch QLED TVs under 600 euros absolutely offer a brighter and more impactful picture than OLED TVs, and in recent years have impressively closed the gap in terms of black depth and viewing angles. The new LED-backlit Neo QLEDs are yet another step in that direction.
