How to choose your well pump

An efficient and effective well pump must provide a good water output and last for many years. That is why you should conduct your search with particular attention to the following criteria.

#1 - Submersible or surface pump?

These are the two main types of well pumps and they are chosen according to the pumping conditions.

  • A submersible well pump sits in the water, below the waterline. As such, noise is muffled by the water and the sound of the equipment operating is not likely to disturb you. It is recommended for wells deeper than 8 meters.
  • A surface well pump is placed in a small technical room next to the well. It is effective for groundwater sources less than 8 meters deep.

#2 - The granulometry of the water

Before any purchase of well pumps, check the grain size of the water suitable for its use. Otherwise, the unit may be damaged prematurely! To help you, here is a simple guide:

  • If the water in the well is clear, it means that its grain size is less than 4 or 5 mm;
  • If the well water is dirty (non-transparent water with an orange, yellow or brown color), its grain size is above 10 mm.

#3 - Water flow

The water flow rate obtained defines the performance of the well pump. This information should be included in the pump's technical specifications, so all you have to do is choose according to the intended use.

  • For a domestic use, we are looking for an instantaneous flow of 3 m³/hour on average. The most efficient pumps will go up to 4 m³/hour, but do not go below 2 m³/hour.
  • If the water is used to water the lawn or plants, a minimum flow rate of 1.5 m³/hour is required for a 500 m² area. Revise this flow rate slightly up or down depending on the size of the area to be watered.

#4 - The power

Well pumps incorporate motors that condition their performance. Their power varies from 100 W to 1000 W depending on the model. As you can see, the more powerful the motor, the higher the flow rate and the more satisfactory the water output pressure at the tap.

#5 - Food

Most well pumps require an electrical power supply. In this sense, they come with connections that are provided at the time of purchase, but which can also be extended. Nevertheless, with the rise of renewable energy, you can find solar well pumps. Eco-responsible commitment guaranteed!

How does a well pump work?

Designed to operate below the surface of the ground, a well pump is used to bring water from your well to your home. It is an effective way to obtain safe and abundant drinking water. It will not work if it is not completely immersed in the liquid.

The most common is the submersible pumps. These are multistage electric pumps designed to draw water from a depth of more than 8 meters. But if your well is less than 8 m deep, you can choose between a submersible pump or a surface pump.

A submersible pump has a strainer that filters the water of large particles before it enters the pump. The non-return valve, as its name suggests, prevents it from falling back when the pump is stopped. It keeps it in the pipe. Thus, the pump is primed and can start quickly.

The bladder tank, in conjunction with the pump, allows you to have a reserve even if the pump has not yet started. You need this when the pump is supplying a drip system, for example. It is also equipped with a pressure switch or pressure switch that allows you to automate the pump when it is coupled with a booster tank.

Submersible pumps have the great advantage of being able to be installed even in very narrow places. Moreover, they allow you to benefit from underground water to supply your house or to water your garden. Silent, they work by delivery, not by suction. As for the motor, it is automatically cooled by water. Since the suction is from the bottom of the pump, you won't have any problems with priming.

The different types of well pumps

The use of a well pump is more or less complicated depending on the type of tool used. Assess your needs and situation before making a decision.

Submersible well pump

As its name indicates, this pump is located at the bottom of the well. It works even in contact with the water. It is suitable for wells with a depth of more than 8 m. The technique of the submerged well pump is particularly effective. This is due to its ability to quickly and easily draw water out of the well. This is the most common system used. In addition, this device does not cause any noise pollution. Its noise does not reach the surface. The only small drawback is that it requires more frequent maintenance.

Manual well pump

This pump is used for shallower wells. It is quite easy to use. To draw in water, you use the lever on the unit that activates the piston. This is the piston that loads the water to the surface. There are two types of manual well pumps to choose from. The first is known as a semi-rotary pump. Its piston is cylindrical in shape and is connected to a lever that controls the flow of water. The second option is the swing pump. It operates with an arm.

Well pump with booster

This pump is more advanced because of its booster. The water flow is more stable. This makes it much more convenient to use. It is a very well equipped professional tool. Among its parts is the two-pocket tank that holds drinking water and non-drinking water. Its mode of operation promotes considerable economy, as the water obtained is used in several ways.

Hand pump or submersible well pump?

Hand pump for wells

A hand well pump is a hand pump, characterized by a simple and efficient design. This type of pump draws water from the well by means of a hand-operated piston, hence the name. It is often made of metal and coated with a rustproof paint.

Practical and decorative for the garden, this type of well pump is very durable and an economical and long-lasting option for a household. However, the manual well pump has a few drawbacks such as the physical effort expended when pumping and the regular maintenance the pump requires to remain usable.

Submersible well pump

It is an electric multistage pump that can draw water from a depth of 8 m and more. The submersible well pump is powered by an electric motor that sends the pumped water through a hose and directly to a tap or tank. This type of well pump makes little noise even though it draws water from a great depth.

The submersible well pump can withstand all weather conditions. They are also safer than other types of pumps due to its main advantage of storing dangerous elements that the water may contain. On the other hand, the cost of operation can be an issue. Fortunately, there are solar well pumps.

Verdict

Both types of well pumps are very advantageous because they are very easy to install. The manual well pump is useful and convenient for moderate and occasional use. But it is better to choose a submersible well pump for high water pressure and frequent use.

Why buy a well pump?

For considerable water savings

It's always a good idea to have an alternative water supply. By using a well pump to water your outdoor areas, you can save a lot of water. You can also supply some of the water points in your home, such as toilets.

To build up reserves

During heat waves, it is essential to have water available. With the help of a well pump, you can build up a water supply. All you have to do is connect your tank to the pumping system. In addition, some models can sanitize the water so that you always have clean water.

For its simplicity of use

Well pumps are very convenient to use. You have an ingenious on/off system. When you turn on the tap, the pump automatically turns on, pumping out as much water as possible. As soon as you turn off the faucet, it turns off.

For its versatility

Well pumps can be installed almost anywhere, as long as there is a water source nearby. You can also use them regardless of the water quality. Its pipe-like shape allows you to put it in any cavity, even if it's narrow. They can be used to supply your home with water or water your garden without any effort.

For its durability

Well pumps are normally immersed in water. You will be able to use them for a long time, because they are waterproof. You won't need to change them often since they are equipped with a stainless steel coating. What's more, the well pump is affordable and accessible to all pockets. You can easily find a model that combines performance and sturdiness at a lower price.

Tips

Position your submersible well pump properly

We strongly advise against placing the submersible pump at the bottom of a well. Sand or other dirt can clog the pump or even damage it. It should be placed at least 50 cm from the bottom.

Maintain your submersible pump properly

It is recommended that a complete check be performed once a year. To do this, take the pump out of the well and check the operation of the floats and the cleanliness of the pump. Also remove any deposits that are detrimental to the cooling of the motor. You may even want to call in a professional if there is a problem.

Remember to purify your well water

The well pump is responsible for pushing water into your home, not for purifying it. Yet well water can be infested with microbes and bacteria of all kinds. Therefore, you need to install an efficient filtration system in the pipes that carry the water from the well to your home.

De-silting your well

When too much sand has accumulated at the bottom of your well, it can become clogged. So you need to desilt it. There is water desilting, wind desilting and manual desilting, in the case of a small presence of sand. It's up to you to choose the method that works for you.

Separate tap water from well water

If you use tap water and well water at the same time, it's best to install two separate circuits. Use the tap water for drinking and cooking, and keep the well water for showering, laundry, and washing dishes.
