How to choose your pellet stove

The pellet stove is one of the most economical forms of heating. Under real-life conditions, the operating costs are much lower than those of oil, gas and electricity.

This type of appliance often requires an electrical connection and is suitable as an auxiliary heater for heating a single room. There are, however, pellet stoves that can be ducted and can heat two or more rooms. Your heating needs determine which model to choose.

#1 - The power

In general, the power of a pellet stove varies from 6 to 14 kW. For a house of 10 m², count 1 kW if the house is old, 800 W for a well insulated house and 600 W for a house RT 2012. For a 100 m² house, i.e. a whole house, count 10 kW for an average insulation, 8 kW for a good insulation and 6 kW if the house is new.

Regardless of the power level you choose, you must first and foremost reinforce the insulation of your house. It would be counterproductive to install a pellet stove in a poorly insulated house. Similarly, the size of the appliance should take into account the area to be heated, not the total area of your home.

#2 - Performance

Do

not buy a pellet stove with an efficiency of less than 80%. Also be aware that this criterion is dependent on the smoke system used. And the differences between the models remain quite small since it is 5% on average.

You must also take into account the rating of the Green Flame label. Only pellet stoves rated 7 stars are eligible for financial aid for purchase and installation. In any case, the technology of pellet stoves is maturing, as evidenced by the announced yields closer to reality than before.

#3 - Autonomy

The

autonomy ranges from 12 to 72 hours. It depends on the capacity of the tank and the power of the pellet stove. Choose a device with a capacity of 16 kg minimum, since a bag containing 15 kg of pellets offers a full day of autonomy in the heart of winter. The most generous models can have a tank of 50 kg.

#4 - The noise

Except

for the hard-to-find natural convection models, pellet stoves are noisy. This is justified by the presence of a fan in these devices. However, the noise will only really be heard at maximum power and speed. And there are few situations that require it, such as extreme cold or a return from vacation.

In normal use, the noise level of a pellet stove is around 40 dB

. The nuisance remains minimal, the equivalent of a quiet apartment, quieter than a dishwasher that runs at 45 dB. It is mainly the perception that gives the impression that a pellet stove is noisier than another.

#5 - Practicalities

Prefer

a cast iron crucible to a steel crucible. The heavier cast iron also proves to be more effective at dampening the sound of pellets falling into the firebox. In addition, most new stoves use the latest ceramic candles, which are easier to light and more durable.

A major advantage of the pellet stove is its automatic and programmable operation. Some electronic cards offer 3 programs per day, while others are satisfied with 2 programmable ranges. And there are more and more pellet stoves connected, controllable remotely via Wi-Fi.

Installation of a pellet stove

buyingbetter.co.uk

The choice of the installer

A pellet stove is expensive in terms of purchase and installation. But beyond the price, it is important to choose the professional who will perform the installation. Indeed, the efficiency and the lifespan of the stove depend on it. Hire a locally known installer, certified RGE or Qualibois.

Qualibois is a certification that is renewable every year. It guarantees that the recipient professional has undergone training in the installation of wood-burning appliances. This certificate assures you that the person you hire will be able to proceed according to the rules of art and comply with the various requirements.

Note that the Qualibois installer is subject to a control visit after his training period. Checks are also carried out every 3 years to evaluate the certified professionals. You will find the list of Qualibois certified companies and professionals on the certifier's website.

The location

Depending on your aesthetic and technical requirements, the installer will determine the best location for your pellet stove. Of course, this choice should take into account the volume to be heated. For better heat distribution, the center of the main room is often recommended.

If you bought a pellet stove to heat a room on the floor, it is better to install it near a stairwell. In this case, rely on the indications and recommendations of the professional to determine the settings and installation. This will ensure that the unit performs optimally.

Finally, the agreement of the co-ownership is necessary to install a pellet stove in an apartment. Indeed, the exhaust ducts belong to the common areas, not to mention the possible inconvenience of smoke in case of poor installation.

Heat pump or pellet stove?

Heat pump

The heat pump or PAC absorbs or moves heat from one place to another. It draws warm air from outside the house or directly from the ground. The heat pump uses less electricity when it is only used to convert cold air into warm air or warm air into cold air. In summer, reversible models can be transformed into air conditioners.

On the downside, the price cannot be ignored. More expensive than gas or oil-fired boilers, heat pumps cost between 7,500 and 15,000 euros. On top of this, there is the cost of installation. In addition, its convection operation does not allow for an even distribution of heat. Beware of draughts!

Pellet stove

An automatic device, this heating equipment offers an efficiency of 90%. Add to that the low price of fuel (5.7 euros to produce 100 kWh). As for autonomy, a standard stove consumes 1 bag of 15 kg per day, or 1 ton of pellets per year. Finally, the polluting emissions are low and the cleaning is not very constraining.

At the drawbacks, we retain especially the noise for pellet stoves equipped with a fan. Of course, solutions exist to reduce this noise nuisance, but none to make the device completely silent. Finally, the electrical connection for lighting and programming poses problems during power cuts.

Verdict

As you can see, the pellet stove is suitable for most homes. Fully automatic, it is an excellent supplementary heating, much better than the wood stove and the PAC. In addition, the pellet stove outperforms the heat pump in terms of cost and efficiency. But the heat pump can have a reversible function, making it useful all year round.

Why buy a pellet stove?

Efficiency

Functional, elaborate and efficient, the pellet stove can be used by all households. It is very advantageous in terms of efficiency which can go up to 85%. It offers a heat suitable for any season, while its energy consumption can be lower.

Safety

This type of heating is much safer. Log stoves and fireplaces require manual intervention for loading. The pellet stove is fed automatically. This makes it easy to use on a daily basis.

Less expensive

The use of a pellet stove allows to relieve the bill of the end of me. It consumes much less energy compared to other heating systems such as electric boilers, gas or oil boilers.

Practical

In winter or in summer, the temperature sought by each household is not the same. You can choose the pellet stove for its ease of use and heat regulation. Each household can precisely regulate the temperature and choose cycles adapted to their needs.

Decorative

When decorating the interior, nothing should be left to chance. The pellet stove comes in many shapes, colors and styles. Modern and with clean lines, pellet stoves can complete the look of a room. Of a worked aesthetic, you can choose some according to your style of interior.

Tips

Calculate the costs correctly.

Consider the installation and pellets when estimating costs. Don't forget the cost of installing a vent. As a guideline, 300 euros worth of pellets is enough for a whole year.

Hire a certified professional for the installation.

Hire

a certified professional to install your pellet stove, it's safer. It is also the best way to ensure that it works properly, the best option to benefit from the tax credit and an argument for compensation in case of disaster.

Add a fan.

Installing your pellet stove in a room with a column or ceiling fan can increase circulation and heating efficiency. This is because heat released by convection circulates better if it is ventilated.

Maintain your stove regularly.

Clean

the stove as regularly as recommended by the manufacturer and vacuum the stove top and fan to ensure proper operation of your stove

.

Get insurance approval before installation.

Adding any type of wood stove to your home may slightly increase your insurance premiums, but not telling your insurer may void your fire coverage. Always call your insurance company before purchasing a stove and make sure you have proof that your pellet stove is covered by your insurance policy.
