For the shell, also known as the outer shell, modular helmet manufacturers can choose between two types of materials. Either they choosecomposite materials orthermoplastic, or they use both. Composite materials are based on carbon fiber or aramid. They are more expensive than thermoplastic but provide better protection. The interior of modular helmets often uses high density foam. It is made of several adjustable components, allowing them to conform to the shape of the rider's skull. In addition, the best modular helmets have interiors withgrooves onboth sides. These make wearing eyeglasses or using intercom more comfortable and painless.
Choosing a sturdy and well-padded modular helmet is not enough. You need to consider thefield of vision, as wide as possible in width and height. Don't buy a motorcycle helmet with a limited field of vision, your safety depends on it. You should also know that no visor covers the entire face. The sun can make it difficult to see the road and its many obstacles. So get a modular helmetwith a sun shield inside the visor. And add a UV protection film to the outer visor. Pinlock films are the best. And if that's still not enough, you can also wear sunglasses.
A good modular helmet should provide the same protection as a full face helmet when you drop the chin strap. The latter enhances safety on major roads. Keep it tightly closed. Make sure it is easy to handle, even with gloves. Most chin straps can be lifted, and some are even removable. And unless you have dual P/J approval, don't ride with the chinrest up. For more comfort, check the belt of the helmet attachment and the size of the chinstrap. Under no circumstances should it be too tight or too loose around the jaw. Also check the strength and stability of the closure. This will protect you from haphazard belt openings while riding.
Of course, the look of a helmet is important. But in this respect, all brands are equal and offer models in matte black. That's why you should never evaluate a modular helmet based on its looks alone. Carefully study the technical characteristics. These are the ones that can save your life in case of an accident.
A
motorcycle traveling at over 100 miles per hour will cause you to hear noises of 100 dB or more. This annoyance is mainly due to drafts generated by a chin strap not closed properly and the visor seals. Fortunately, you can limit the noise by purchasing a modular helmet with achin flap
. In fact, this part blocks the passage of the wind. This makes the helmet much quieter.
Manufacturers always put vents on their helmets. The reason is simple: without them, you couldn't breathe! Plus, the air inlets help clear away the fog that forms when you breathe. The ventilation is only on the top of the helmet and below the visor. Thanks to the ventilation system, you can ride tightly, summer and winter.
No matter what materials and accessories are used in its design, a good modular helmet should never exceed 1.8 kg. Beyond that, the impact of the weight on your neck and neck muscles at high speeds will be unbearable. In general, a modular helmet weighs 1.6 to 1.8 kg depending on the shell and padding. The lighter a modular helmet is, the more stable and comfortable it will be at high speeds.
Most modular helmets fit smaller. Preferably, choose a size above your head size. That way, your face won't be too compressed by the padding and you can ride comfortably. On the other hand, the foams will eventually pack down if the helmet is too large. Before you buy the model you're interested in, find out if a size chart is available. It's usually found near the description and spec sheet.
Motorcycle helmets cost between 50 and 1,000 euros. Because of their modularity, accessories and level of protection offered, modular helmets are expensive. A good entry-level model will not be worth less than 125 euros, if it is a major brand. Top-of-the-range models easily go up to 600 euros and much more. Plan on a budget ofat least 200 euros for the purchase. Motorcycle helmets cost between 50 and 1,000 euros. Cleaning
The easiest way to clean a modular motorcycle helmet is touse a sponge and soap for the shell. To clean the visors, do not use alcohol. Some removable foams can be washed in the washing machine. Check the helmet's manual to see if it is machine washable! If not, use a shampoo to clean the foam.
Never scrub without water or an abrasive material, otherwise you will scratch the helmet. Warm water is best for softening the dirt before removing it. For the visor and inner sun shield, use a soft cloth and a little water. And change the visor every 5 years.
Drying
When drying, place your modular helmet in a warm place. But not too much, otherwise you will damage the foam or the visor. And make sure that the foam and its lining are dry before putting them back in the helmet. Finally, you can wear a balaclava or a sanitair to avoid dirtying the inside of the helmet. That way, you won't have to clean it.
If you rub the visor with an abrasive material, it will scratch. In this case, it must be replaced. Your safety on a motorcycle depends on the visibility of the helmet. But a modular helmet with a scratched visor is not ideal for seeing the road.
What the law says
More than half of the people injured in motorcycle accidents suffer brain damage. The risk to the head has led to the mandatory wearing of helmets on two-wheelers. In fact, article R431-1 of the French Highway Code dated June 28, 1973, states: "While in traffic, any driver or passenger of a motorcycle, motor tricycle, motor quadricycle or moped must wear a helmet of approved type. This helmet must be fastened. Disobeying this rule is punishable by a fine and deduction of points on the license.
The ECE 22-05 standard
Mandatory helmet use does not mean that just any helmet will do. You need a helmet that is covered by the regulation. The European Union has decreed that all motorcycle helmets sold in its territory must meet the ECE 22-05 standard. Adopted in 2002, this standard replaces the French standard NF S 72.305, which remains valid to this day.
The approval
All helmets sold in the European Union must have their approval visible on the chin strap. The label is green for the French standard and white if it meets the European standard. No other color is recognized in the UK. For the European approval, the letter E is written on the label followed by the identification code of the country of origin of the helmet.
To know the level of approval of a motorcycle helmet, check the presence of certain indications. P indicates that the chin strap has passed the resistance test. If not, you will see NP. The letter J indicates jet helmets. In the case of a modular helmet, P/J means that it is jet and full face approved. The letter P alone indicates that the modular helmet is not approved in jet configuration.
Reflective stripes
in the UK, the road authorities have gone further than the European directives. In addition to the marking, it requires the installation of reflective strips on the front, sides and back of the helmet. All helmets sold in the UK must be accompanied by 4 stickers, provided free of charge by the seller. Not affixing the reflective strips is an act punishable by a fine of 90 euros and the withdrawal of 3 points on the license.
Never remove the chin strap of your modular helmet. Indeed, the insurers could refuse any compensation in case of accident. And the law forbids riding with the chin strap up for a non-jet approved helmet. In fact, many motorcyclists do not respect this rule.
Modular helmets are hybrid motorcycle helmets, both jet helmets and full face helmets. Depending on the accessories and the opening angles of the chin strap, there are 3 types of modular helmets.
A motorcycle helmet is considered to be a classic modular helmet whenthe chin strap can be raised above the head to change from a full face helmet to a jet helmet configuration. The Shoei Neotec 2, featured in our comparison, is one of the best modular helmets of this type.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Who is it for?
If you're looking for simplicity, you need a classic modular helmet. Plus, the best models are of this type.
Some
modular helmet manufacturers have taken the concept a step further. They've designed a very special type called a convertible or flip-up helmet, wherethe chin strap flips all the way to the back of the helmet, making it more aerodynamic in a jet configuration. More aesthetically pleasing and more functional as well. The LS2 Valiant is an excellent convertible helmet.
Advantages:
Disadvantages :
Who is it for?
If you're used to riding around town in a jet helmet configuration and occasionally venturing out on the roads, the convertible helmet is for you.
Some brands have taken modularity to the extreme. Instead of flipping to the top or back of the helmet, the chin strap can be completely removed! Convertible and removable, this type of helmet is called a crossover. Once the chin strap is removed, you will have a true jet helmet. However, this type of helmet is often heavier. The best model of this type is the Nolan N70.2X.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Who is it for?
If you have trouble with the aesthetics of the chin strap visible in jet configuration, treat yourself to a crossover or convertible helmet.
Not easy to choose a modular helmet when you wear glasses! You must choose a helmet with grooves inside. These spaces can accommodate the branches of glasses. Thus, the helmet will be much more comfortable.
The modular or convertible helmet is equipped with a removable chin strap that can be tilted or removed, depending on the type of helmet. It allows you to leave your face uncovered while riding, which is a significant advantage during the warmer seasons. On the other hand, in terms of safety standards, it is less demanding than the full-face model.
The full-face helmet offers better protection thanks to its one-piece cap. It also offers better soundproofing than the modular type. The full-face model offers better guarantees in terms of driver safety. On the other hand, the driver will have to deal with the heat at certain times, as ventilation is the main problem with this type of helmet.
If you want to drive with optimum concentration, choose a full-face helmet. This is unbeatable in terms of soundproofing. If you feel that heat is a problem during your rides, choose the modular helmet, which will offer better ventilation compared to the full face helmet.
Excellent ventilation
A modular motorcycle helmet has a foldable chin strap. The visor can be raised either above the cold or at the back of the helmet. This gives you the freedom to have your face uncovered on hot days for good ventilation.
Versatile
The biggest advantage of the modular helmet is the dual P/J certification. This certification means that it can be used with the chin strap open or closed. This means that you can have either an urban jet helmet or a full face road helmet, depending on your needs. This gives you an advantage in terms of visibility and above all to enjoy the landscape.
Comfortable
In terms of comfort, the modular helmet is also perfect. Its interior is very pleasant, often with soft padding and sometimes with advanced technology. It guarantees maximum comfort even after many miles on your motorcycle. This type of padding also guarantees increased safety in case of an accident as it cushions the impact and keeps your head well protected.
Ultra practical
Another strong point of the modular helmet is its everyday practicality. All you have to do is lift up the chin strap to talk during a check or a short break. You can also make quick runs off your bike without having to remove it. It is a very practical helmet that has the necessary accessories for you to ride comfortably.
Better accessibility of the face
A modular motorcycle helmet is ideal for people who wear glasses. It offers great accessibility to the face. It is therefore possible to put on your glasses without having to remove it completely. This type of helmet does not affect your vision, regardless of the season or the weather.
Optimal protection
A modular helmet is undoubtedly more secure than a jet helmet. If you like to ride with a jet helmet, this type of helmet offers you the same feeling of freedom, but with more protection.
In our opinion, the best brands of Modular motorcycle helmets in 2022 are :
The Chinese brand was founded in 2007, although the company that manufactures the helmets has been around since 1990. LS2 offers a wide range of motorcycle helmets, from jet helmets to full-face helmets, to modular helmets and off-road helmets. This brand is known for its very low rate of after-sales returns, which speaks volumes about its manufacturing quality.
Every motorcycle enthusiast knows Shoei. The Japanese brand, founded in 1958, is specialized in the manufacture of high-end helmets thanks to its technological advance and its manufacturing methods. Indeed, all Shoei helmets are produced in Japan, almost by hand! The modular motorcycle helmet of the Neotec series is one of its greatest successes.
Present for more than 25 years, the French brand Sark is today one of the leaders concerning the protection of motorcyclists. It designs helmets adapted to all riding styles and practices. Its know-how offers customers an irreproachable level of technicality. Full face helmet, jet helmet, modular helmet... Shark knows how to do everything.
The Scorpion brand is one of the top 5 motorcycle helmet manufacturers in the world and has been for years. It has a wide range of models available through the different variations of its famous EXO helmet. The modular version of the Scorpion EXO helmet is a worldwide reference in terms of safety and comfort.
A subsidiary of the Aixstream group, Astone is a motorcycle helmet brand created in 2008. Based in the UK like its parent company, it manages the entire production chain. From design to distribution, everything happens in the UK. In addition, its research and development team is entirely in-house. The brand produces entry-level motorcycle helmets.
The diagram below will help you to get an idea of the typical prices for each price range (entry-level, mid-range and high-end).
However, more expensive does not necessarily mean better.
We therefore advise you to always consult our ranking before deciding, rather than blindly relying on price ranges.
Store your motorcycle helmet properly
When you take off your helmet, make sure you store it in its protective cover if possible. If you are on the road, you can put it in your top case, wedge it on the tank against the handlebars, or hang it on a mirror via the chinstrap to avoid dropping it. Once at home, store it on a shelf away from dust and moisture. If it's wet, from rain or perspiration, dry it before storing it.
Change your modular helmet when it has taken a shock
After suffering a sudden impact, there's a risk that your modular helmet will crack from the outside or inside. This means it won't be able to protect you properly in the future, and in the event of an accident, your insurance may even refuse to compensate you. It is therefore advisable to change your modular helmet in the event of an impact, avoiding second-hand helmets if possible.
Reduce noise pollution
Even with the chin flap, your modular helmet still produces some noise which, in the long term, may cause real hearing damage. Earplugs are the solution to this problem. In fact, there are specific models that neutralize dangerous frequencies without cutting off bikers from their environment.
Also wear protective gloves
Your head is not the only part to protect when you ride a motorcycle. In the event of an accident, your hands are also extremely exposed, especially since bikers often have the reflex to protect themselves with their hands when they fall. That's why it's important to wear the right protective gloves, which will also protect you from the elements.
Remember to camouflage your neck in winter
As a motorcycle enthusiast, you should know that the weather is not particularly mild when you ride, and it's even worse in the winter. If your neck is poorly protected from the cold, you will ride with your head buried in your shoulders and you will lose mobility. It is therefore strongly recommended to wear a balaclava or neck brace under your helmet in winter.
Every month we help more than 1 000 000 people buy better and smarter.
