How to choose your mattress

A good night's sleep conditions our daily well-being and improves our general health. Choosing the right mattress is therefore essential for staying in shape. But how do you choose your mattress? To help you, here are the most important selection criteria to take into account:

#1 - Choose a support adapted to the position in which you sleep.

The mattress must provide support adapted to the position in which you sleep and to your lifestyle (sporty, sedentary, etc.). The support of the mattress, also called support, depends on the suspension of the mattress (springs, foam, latex...) and its density . This buying guide will explain how to choose the type of support best suited to your needs.

#2 - Choose an upholstery with a comfortable firmness.

The mattress's filling (on its outer layers) is what allows you to feel immediate comfort when lying down. This is called the reception. The reception of the mattress can be more or less firm. So don't confuse "firmness" of the mattress with "support", as too many buying guides and salespeople in stores do. The quality of the welcome depends on the quantity and quality of the filling. If you sweat a lot, we recommend that you choose natural fillings (such as wool), rather than synthetic fillings (viscose, viscoelastic, etc.) that tend to make you sweat.

#3 - The ease of changing position.

Some mattresses, especially mattresses that offer too little support and memory foam mattresses that are too enveloping, make it difficult to change position. If you usually sleep on your back or stomach, never buy a mattress that is difficult to change positions on, as this means it lacks support for the position you sleep in.

The warranty period

Most manufacturers guarantee their mattresses for an average of 5 years or more. However, this warranty only protects you against manufacturing defects and not against wear and tear. In other words, if your mattress starts to sag after 6 months and becomes uncomfortable, you will not be able to invoke the warranty because the manufacturer will say that it is normal wear and tear of the mattress! The length of the warranty is not an essential criterion to take into account when choosing your mattress. It's just marketing.

#4 - The independence of the bed.

If

you have a spouse, always test the mattress together. Make sure you check to see if you are disturbed when your partner changes positions in the bed. If so, opt for two separate mattresses or a memory foam mattress, which usually provides good sleeping independence.

#5 - Ventilation of the mattress.

Every night we expel water in the form of perspiration. Good mattress ventilation provides both a more comfortable sleep and better mattress preservation. Ventilation depends on the type of mattress (foam, springs, latex...), its internal structure and its quality. If you tend to sweat a lot, prefer well-ventilated mattresses and avoid entry-level foam mattresses.

#6 - Test period and return policy.

For mid-range and high-end mattresses, favor those that offer at least 30 days of testing and a good return policy (some manufacturers even come to pick up the mattress from your home if it doesn't suit you!).

Understanding the difference between firmness and support

Support should not be confused with firmness.

Support is an objective criterion which corresponds to the resistance of the mattress to sinking and the quality of its support. Good support for your body, especially your spine, will help prevent back pain.

Firmness is a subjective criterion that corresponds to the feeling of comfort when you lie down on the mattress. It is a quality of what is also known as the mattress's reception. The firmness you feel depends mainly on the few centimetres of filling on the surface of the mattress, but has no effect on the support of the mattress as such.

A good mattress should therefore combine the right firmness for your comfort with the right support to prevent back pain

The best mattresses 21

What type of mattress should I choose?

There are three main types of mattress: spring, foam and latex. All other names are either scientific details or marketing hype.

Memory foam mattresses are simply normal mattresses (spring, foam, or latex) with a layer of thermo-elastic foam added.

Please note: Less common mattresses (futons, wool mattresses, waterbeds, etc.) may have some advantages, but they generally offer less value for money for most people. We will therefore not cover them in this buying guide.

Spring mattresses

The best mattresses 22

These are the "traditional" mattresses that we are familiar with. There are several types: bonnels, continuous wire (also called multispire), and pocketed. Of these, pocket sprung mattresses are both the most popular and the best performing.

In this type of mattress, each spring is individually encased and reacts independently to the pressure it receives. This allows the mattress to offer much more individualised support than a foam or latex mattress.

Advantages :

  • Individualised support for all parts of the body.
  • Better ventilation than foam and latex mattresses.
  • Independent sleeping with your spouse or partner.

Disadvantages:

  • Not as good as foam mattresses for mid-range mattresses.

Who is it for?

Pocket spring mattresses are best suited to more affluent households. Indeed, at less than €700, polyurethane foam mattresses will almost always perform better than spring mattresses. At over €700, sprung mattresses can be an interesting choice, especially if you sleep as a couple and want good sleeping independence, or if you sweat a lot at night and need a well ventilated mattress.

Foam mattresses

The best mattresses 23

There are two types of foam mattresses: polyether and polyurethane. Polyether mattresses are generally entry-level mattresses that should be reserved for occasional sleeping. If you buy a foam mattress for regular use, always make sure you buy a polyurethane mattress and not a polyether one.

Polyurethane mattresses will react slightly less well to moisture than polyether mattresses, but they will have a longer life, may have better density, and overall have many more qualities than a polyether mattress.

Advantages :

  • Excellent durability.
  • Very good price/quality ratio.
  • Hypoallergenic.

Disadvantages:

  • Sensitive to humidity.

Who is it for?

There are so many different polyurethane mattresses that it is difficult to answer this question. What they generally have in common is that they are ideal for people with allergies (dust mites, etc.) and offer better value for money than other types of mattress. They are sensitive to moisture, but if the mattress structure is well ventilated and the filling is sufficiently breathable, this is not a problem.

If you opt for a polyurethane foam mattress, always choose one with a high density (> 30 kg/m3) and high resilience (for a longer life and better ventilation of the mattress).

Latex mattresses

The best mattresses 24

Latex mattresses have an excellent lifespan, they are almost as well ventilated as pocket springs, they are not very sensitive to dust mites, and they have an elasticity similar to memory foam mattresses. They therefore have the same qualities as high-end foam mattresses, but they are often more expensive for the same quality.

Advantages :

  • Excellent durability.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Good ventilation.

Disadvantages:

  • High price (especially if you want natural latex).

Who is it for?

A few years ago, latex mattresses were simply the best mattresses. Since then, things have changed and polyurethane foam mattresses have become more technical. Today, the only real reason to buy a latex mattress is if you want a top-of-the-range mattress made of natural material and are prepared to pay the price for it. This is probably the only case in which we would advise you to buy a natural latex mattress.

Memory foam mattresses

The best mattresses 25

Memory foam mattresses are normal mattresses (spring, foam or latex) to which a layer of viscoelastic heat-sensitive foam has been added. This foam reacts to body heat and adapts to the body shape of each sleeper.

Memory foam mattresses offer exceptional comfort but are not without their drawbacks.

Advantages :

  • Incomparable comfort for those who like the enveloping effect of memory foam.

Disadvantages:

  • Often expensive.
  • Not very breathable.
  • Reacts to the temperature of the room (softer in hot weather, firmer in cold weather).

Who is it for?

We advise you to avoid memory foam mattresses if you sweat a lot at night. Otherwise, memory foam mattresses are primarily a matter of taste: some people love the cushioning while others can't stand it. The best way to find out if you like it is to simply review one!

How to test your mattress

The key to choosing a mattress is to try it out!

There is no such thing as an ideal mattress. The choice of a mattress is very personal and depends on many criteria, including body shape, habits, but also feeling, a very subjective criterion. A good mattress should be comfortable and, above all, offer good support for the spine in order to avoid back pain.

If you buy your mattress from a distance and/or on an e-commerce site, you have 14 days to try it out and return it. Some brands even offer to extend the trial period of your mattress to 30 days or even 2 months! This is much better than buying it in a shop, where you can usually only review it for a few minutes. If you decide to exercise your legal right of withdrawal and return your mattress, you can find a sample return letter here on the service-public.fr website.

Here's a simple way to review whether a mattress is right for you:

  • Lying on your back, try to put your hand between your back and the mattress. If you can do this easily, the mattress is too firm.
  • Try turning over to lie on your stomach. Then turn over onto your back again. If you feel as if you are sinking into the mattress and it is difficult to change position, the mattress lacks support.
  • If the support is adequate, sleep at least one full night on the mattress. If you wake up with a sore back or backache, it is (obviously) not suitable. If you wake up feeling refreshed, the mattress is likely to be suitable for you!

Choose a mattress adapted to the position in which you sleep

Although mattresses are not designed to fit one position and most people sleep in several positions during a sleep cycle, some types of mattresses are better suited to certain sleeping positions than others.

  • If you sleep on your side: choose a soft mattress with low to moderate support that will allow your reeds and shoulders to move into the mattress a little, which will help keep your spine in good alignment throughout the night. A good solution may be to opt for a memory foam mattress.
  • If you sleep on your back: the choice is yours! People who sleep on their backs can usually sleep comfortably on most mattresses.
  • If you sleep on your stomach: Sleeping on your stomach can create tension in your body and cause the spine to curve too much if your mattress does not offer enough support. Choose a mattress with sufficient support to avoid this.
  • If you sleep as a couple: ideally you should choose two single mattresses, each with its own individuality. But if this is not possible for you, a pocket spring or memory foam mattress is a good alternative if you don't want to be disturbed every time your partner moves in bed.

The best mattresses 26

The different types of mattress

Mattresses on the market have different fillings. Thus, the suspension can be foam, latex or springs.

Foam mattress

The foam mattress is the most sought after. It meets the needs of all sleepers and fits all budgets. A firm bedding results from this technology. It supports the body well and avoids back pain. You can choose between different types of foam depending on your budget and the quality of sleep expected. The polyether mattress is the most affordable. It offers a density of 16 to 30 kg/m3. The high resilience foam is very elastic with a minimum density of 30 kg/m3. The mattress has good ventilation and is well suited to people with a large body. Finally, memory foam deforms according to your morphology to accommodate the sleeper as it should. Being thermosensitive, it is able to keep you warm during winter and cool in summer.

Spring mattress

The spring mattress is known for its resistance. It provides a good balance between all pressure points. Sleeping independence is at the top whether it is with pocket springs or bonnell springs. The first type is more appreciated. It is also the modern version of this technology. It provides excellent ventilation throughout its life. If we compare the comfort offered by these two springs, the bonnell type is limited. However, it is more durable.

Latex mattress

The synthetic latex mattress like the natural latex one is very soft. Nevertheless, the natural material is softer. It is also airy compared to synthetic latex. This one has a lower density, estimated at 65 to 83 kg/m3 versus 75 to 95 kg/m3 for the other type. Despite this, its firmness is more satisfactory. It is also suitable for people who are sensitive to allergens. All latex mattresses are less durable compared to foam and springs.

Why buy a mattress?

For quality sleep

A comfortable welcome is the first thing you will feel when you lie down on a mattress, regardless of its filling: latex, foam, memory foam or springs. It will considerably improve the quality of your sleep to allow you to wake up gently. It is therefore the guarantee of a restful and soothing sleep.

To avoid back pain

You can reduce aches and pains and heal the deformation of the spine by choosing a good mattress. It provides good support for your entire body. This has the effect of preventing you from lumbar and cervical pain.

To be in shape

Sleeping on the wrong mattress will make you feel even more tired than the day before when you wake up in the morning. Thanks to its firm support and memory design, a mattress allows your muscles to relax completely, giving you all the energy you need to face the new day.

To be more productive

Poor quality sleep can have a negative impact on your daily performance. Poor mood, lack of concentration, fatigue, drowsiness and headaches are among the negative consequences of a bad night's sleep. That's why it's widely recommended to buy a mattress to improve the quality of your life.

For its many health benefits

Although a mattress is expensive, it is a profitable investment for your health and well-being. Indeed, sleeping in much better conditions can help you lose weight, improve your memory and even live longer. It also promotes muscle relaxation. A 2009 study also showed that sleeping on a mattress can make stress disappear.

The best brands of mattress

In our opinion, the best brands of mattress in 2022 are :

Emma matelas
Tediber
Simba
Eve
Bultex

Emma is a German mattress brand founded in 2015, and in only so few years of existence it has already managed to establish itself in 17 other countries on 3 continents. And this is thanks to the quality of its products. Emma mattresses offer an optimal alignment of the spine thanks to its patented technology. Whatever your sleeping position, the Emma mattress offers the comfort and support you need for a better night's sleep.

Tediber is a Belgian brand specialising in the design and manufacture of mattresses that are both firm and cosy. Its mattresses combine the best of 3 technologies: polyurethane foam, memory foam and micro-perforated latex.

Simba is a British mattress and online retail company founded in 2015. It manufactures and sells mattresses, bedding, and other sleep products in several countries, including France, the UK, Canada, and China. Its products are known to be of high quality and can match those of the Emma brand.

Eve is a mattress brand known for the quality of its products, it must be said that it uses mainly high density foam with high durability. This makes its products as durable as they are comfortable. And especially for those who sleep sideways: the mattress offers good pressure relief, especially under the hips and shoulders.

Bultex offers mid-range foam mattresses, from 350 to 1500 €. Bultex has a range dedicated to sportsmen with mattresses that allow them to recover better after efforts.

What is the price mattress

Tips

Clean your mattress well

Before you start cleaning, consider opening the windows to air out the room and let in the sun. Then, mix one glass of white vinegar with three glasses of warm water. Then, soak a washcloth in this mixture and rub your mattress with it, before rinsing with a damp cloth. Finally, rub with a dry cloth and let it air dry.

Get rid of bad smells

When you sleep at night, your body expels water as perspiration. So it's normal for your mattress to retain some odor. To get rid of it, sprinkle talcum powder or baking soda on your mattress after you clean it. Then leave it on for a few hours before vacuuming it. Baking soda also works on dust mites.

Limit the proliferation of dust mites

Dust mites are little bugs that like to take up residence in your mattresses and cause allergies and asthma attacks. Getting rid of them completely is unfortunately not possible, but you can however limit their proliferation. To do this, make sure you air your room every morning. Also remember to use a dehumidifier and to vacuum regularly, including on the mattress.

Use a mattress topper

A mattress topper is a thin quilt to be placed between the mattress and the fitted sheet. It will protect your mattress from night sweats, but will also optimize your comfort. If your bedding is too firm, the mattress topper is also a great option to make it softer.

Think about air mattresses

To change from the classic mattresses, why not opt for an inflatable mattress? This will bring a touch of style to your room, which will surely amaze your friends. By the way, you can choose between an air-inflated or water-inflated mattress. In both cases, the mattress will give you an incredible feeling of comfort.

Using a mattress topper can be a temporary solution to an uncomfortable mattress that is starting to wear out. The mattress topper is about 4 to 7 cm long and is placed on the mattress. It is attached to the 4 corners of the mattress. It increases the performance and comfort of the mattress. However, if the springs start to wear out, there is no other solution than to replace it.
