How to choose your LED bulb

If you want to choose your LED lamp properly, you should take the following criteria into consideration:

#1 - The size and shape of the base

LED bulbs come in different sizes and shapes, depending on where you use them. The standard bulb used in French homes is an A19 bulb with an E26 base. The E means that the LED bulb has an Edison screw and the 26 means that the base has a diameter of 26 mm (in Europe, you will find E27 bulbs).

#2 - The amount of light

The amount of light is calculated in watts. But today, the power in watts is no longer the best way to determine its power but rather the lumens.
In order to be sure to find the right lumens, the following explanations can help you:
- For 100W bulbs, look for a 1600 lumen LED bulb.
- For 75W bulbs, look for an 1100 lumen LED bulb.
- For 60 W bulbs, go for an 800 lumen LED bulb.
- The 40 W bulbs look like a 450 lumen LED bulb.

#3 - The color temperature

The color temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin, which ranges from 1000 to 12,000 k. It characterizes different shades of light:

- 2700 - 2800 k: warm, yellow light
- 3000 - 3200 k: warm light, still slightly yellow
- 3500 - 4000 k: neutral and bright white light
- 5000 - 6500 k : bright white light slightly bluish

#4 - The CRI

The Color Rendering Index or CRI allows to know the luminous qualities offered by a LED bulb. Presented on a scale of 1 to 100. Generally, light sources with a CRI of 80 to 90 are considered good and those with a CRI of 90+ are excellent. The CRI of 100 shows the true colors of an object. So the CRI of a LED bulb that is suitable for you depends on your taste and need.

#5 - The angle of illumination

The angle of illumination ensures the beam effect and the quality of the diffused light. A LED light bulb can have a lighting angle of 360°. However, an angle of 30° to 50° will illuminate a specific object or area of the room more. On the other hand, an LED light bulb that has an angle of more than 180° will give more light to a wider area.

How to keep the lighting of your LED bulb?

The first thing you should do is to change your LED bulb every 45 days to get the best light without increasing your bill. The following methods can help you keep your LED bulb even more. Before you start, you should turn off your electricity to avoid any kind of electric shock.

Wipe your LED bulb with a clean damp cloth, dirt can be simply removed with water. You won't need to use any chemicals. It will help to remove the dust easily. If the dirt is stubborn, you can use a mixture of vinegar and warm water. While you are cleaning your LED bulb, don't forget to wipe the lamp shade and reflector.

The different types of LED bulbs

There are various types of LED bulbs available in the market. Let's take a look at the most common models so that you can know which one is suitable for your taste or your room to realize your lighting project.

E27 LED Light Bulb

E27 LED bulb with 27mm diameter is the most commonly used in the UK. Its power can vary from 10 to 100 W. It is often presented in 5 forms: classic, round, bell, globe, projector. Its lighting angle can go from 120° to 360°. For its lighting color, it varies from very bright cool white to warm white with a slight yellow tint. E27 LED light bulb is designed for indoor use, as its protection rating is quite low, i.e. IP20.

E40 LED Light Bulb

Marked by its high power of 80 to 160W, E40 industrial LED light bulb is often presented in bell shape. You can directly install it on a 220 volt mains. This makes it suitable for factory lighting, large spaces like supermarkets, but also for public lighting. It also exists in the form of globe or cylinder.

G4 LED Light Bulb

It is a small LED bulb, provided with a base separated by a distance of 4 millimeters. It also performs like other LEDs despite its small size. A G4 LED fits perfectly in small decorative lights. But a G4 LED bulb only lights up with a small voltage of 12V. This makes its power limited to 2 to 3W.

G9 LED Light Bulb

It is a LED bulb composed of a base with two pins spaced 9mm apart. Its shape resembles a capsule or bulb and is perfectly suited for small liminaries. It used to be called the star of halogen lamps, as it can last up to 30,000 hours. It also saves electricity consumption considerably. The G9 LED bulb provides an even light throughout the room. In fact, for a lighting angle of 360°, it consists of a power of 3 to 7W.

GU10 LED Light Bulb

With a 10mm spaced pin base, the GU10 LED bulb is a little different from an ordinary LED bulb. They are almost installed in ceiling fixtures such as integrated spotlights and return bright and fairly accurate lights due to their lighting angle which is between 40 and 80°.

E14 LED Light Bulb

Shaped like a flame, this LED bulb has a small screw base with a diameter of 14 millimeters. Like the E27, the E14 is also more commonly used for indoor lighting. Characterized by a power of 4 or 12 W, its color can vary from warm white to neutral white. Other E14 LED bulbs allow you to have a retro and vintage atmosphere like traditional bulbs thanks to the presence of filaments in its interior.

LED light bulb or energy saving light bulb?

LED Light Bulb

An LED bulb consumes up to 80% less energy than halogen bulbs. It is made of semiconductors that light up when electricity flows through them. You will especially notice the gains if your lights are on for a long time. In addition, an LED bulb can have a lifespan of about 20,000 hours. But it is still sensitive to temperature. With high temperature, there is a change in the parameters of the current flowing through the semiconductor elements, which can lead to the combustion of the LED module.

Low energy bulb

It is a modern light bulb inserted in classic sockets such as E27 and G9. Compared to the good old incandescent lamps, a low-energy bulb saves up to 75% of energy. With a power of 12 W, an energy saving lamp can shine as bright as a 60 W incandescent bulb. The disadvantage is that the energy saving bulb is not suitable for all uses. Indeed, it lights up at full power only after a few seconds. In addition, it contains toxic mercury and must be recycled.

Verdict

Let's assume that an LED bulb shines for an average of 8 hours per day. With a lifetime of 25,000 hours, it will last 8.5 years before it goes out. An incandescent bulb lasts about 2,000 hours. To put it simply, we would use 12.5 bulbs of this type during the same period! Thus, an LED bulb is the most cost and power efficient.

Tips

You can leave your LED bulbs on all night.

LED bulbs generate much less heat than halogen bulbs. So it is possible to leave them on all night. But you still need to be careful, because some LED lights have a risk of starting a fire.

Red colored LED light is the most conducive to sleep.

At night, red light can significantly reduce people's depressive symptoms compared to blue/white light.

A LED bulb that can be burned prematurely.

Unlike single bulbs, LED bulbs don't produce light by using heat. This is part of what makes them so energy efficient.

Prefer dimmed light for your LED bulbs.

Also

use

suitable dimmers with an LED bulb to have dimmed lighting

.

Avoid turning on your LED bulb directly after cleaning it

Dust deposits increase the light sensation of an LED bulb, so it's best to leave it off for a few moments after cleaning it
