How to choose your fan

There are a few important factors to consider when buying a fan. Keep these points in mind to find the best option for your needs.

#1 - Usage

Why do you need a fan and where do you plan to install it? Your answer to these questions will guide most of your other considerations when looking for the right fan.

  • For commercial use (restaurant, open-space office, etc.): choose a sturdy fan that can cover a large area and meet specific cooling needs such as a ceiling or wall fan. These models have the added advantage of not taking up floor space, so they don't reduce the work surface.
  • For personal use: choose residential fans designed to cool homes, bedrooms or terraces: column fan, floor fan, table fan, portable fan...

#2 - Fan type

Most fans consist of blades, a housing, a motor or power source, and structures to hold it upright (legs, bases, etc.). But there are several types of designs that offer a wide choice: stand fans, ceiling fans, centrifugal fans and desk fans. Choose carefully which one will best suit your needs.

For more details, here are the main features of each type of fan:

  • The column fan or tower fan: often delivered with a remote control, it blows the air at 180° and can be used as much during the day as at night, in fact it is very quiet. Compact, it is recommended if you lack of floor space. Dyson's bladeless fans are in this category.
  • Tabletop fan : As the name suggests, this model is specifically for installation on a table or desk. It's designed to cool one person.
  • The Floor fan The best thing about this type of fan is that it has a height-adjustable base that pivots to a certain angle and sweeps the air evenly.
  • Ceiling fan : this is the most practical in a workplace. Not very bulky, can cover a large surface, silent and aesthetic, it will allow a great saving of space and energy.

#3 - Location

The intended location of a fan will be able to help guide your choice as to the size, type, power requirement and cooling capacity you should take. If you plan to use your fan only in the office, a tabletop model will be ideal. It's low power and low noise. For your living room or a medium to large room, a floor or ceiling fan is best. A pedestal fan will work best in a bedroom because it will run quietly and take up little space.

As for the size of the fan, choose it according to the size of the room to be covered. As an example, a room of about 36 square meters requires 135 cm long blades versus 90 cm for a small space of 7 square meters.

#4 - Features

Whether the fan is for your bedroom or your storage room, you'll want certain features to best suit your use. One of the most standard options is oscillation: should the fan sweep the airflow across the room or focus it on a certain area? Some fans even give you a choice of different oscillation patterns or speeds.

Other features to consider include programmable timers, adjustable airflow direction, mobility, user-friendly controls, remote control access, low noise output, multiple fan speeds and power options. Likewise, there are additional options that you may find useful. This is usually the case with multi-purpose fans that can also perform other roles such as misting, air humidification, or ionization.

#5 - Airflow

Closely related to the fan's power, the airflow rate ensures its efficiency. As a rule, it is expressed in m3/h or m3/min. In case you choose a desk fan, a flow rate of 15 min 3 s/min is largely sufficient. A room with an average surface area of 30 m² requires an airflow of about 150 m3/min while 350 to 400 m3/min is highly recommended for a large workshop.

#6 - Noise level

Whatever type of fan you choose, it will always emit noise. Of course, there is no true silent fan to date, but you can still find a model that is less noisy than another. The average noise level is 50 dB, but some brands such as Dyson or Rowenta have developed models that can be almost inaudible, from 33 to 35 dB.

The sound level in decibels

Sound is barely audible below 20 dB. Up to 40 dB, it is considered weak. From 75 dB, it starts to be annoying and from 85 dB, it is dangerous.

How does a fan work?

Contrary to what you might think, fans do not really cool a room or a house. They actually only create a wind chill effect. All fans work by moving the air in the fan area. This air movement creates a cool breeze and makes the room feel cooler. While this breeze isn't really cool, it does have a nice cooling effect that then allows your skin to evaporate perspiration faster.

Of course, the fan only has an effect on bare skin just like the fan. Leaving it on to ventilate the room as you leave is not totally useless. On the contrary, the device will continue to stir the air while renewing it, which will be more effective if you have an open window.

Do not sleep with the fan on

As much as possible, don't leave your fan on all night, as this could have harmful effects on your health. Indeed, the nice cool breeze that helps you fall asleep in a not too sweaty sleep circulates all the dust and pollen in the room, causing an accumulation of dirt in your sinuses and thus can trigger asthma or similar allergies.

The different types of fans

There are mainly four types of fans: desk fans, tower fans, ceiling fans and misting fans.

The desk fan

Desktop fans are compact models that maximize space. Since they're not fixed units like ceiling fans, you can place your fan almost anywhere for targeted cooling. Easily transportable, you can place them in any room and move it around as you move through your home. Some desk fans come with special features that can be as simple as a few speed settings or as advanced as programmable timers. Other models even come with a remote control so you can change the speed and direction of your breeze from afar. In addition, your energy consumption will be lower than that of an air conditioner. An air conditioner consumes about 900 W while a standard desk fan consumes only 50 to 100 W. The cleaning process is often complex. Indeed, dust and dirt accumulate on the blades which are difficult to access. The power cable limits mobility and can cause unpleasant accidents. If children put their hands between the grilles while the fan is running, the blades can injure their hands, even seriously. This type of fan is suitable for fairly small rooms. They are also suitable for people who are not looking for a particularly elaborate design.

The tower fan

Tower fans or column fans provide a cost-effective increase in airflow to the stuffiest rooms in your home. They improve air circulation in rooms where air conditioning is not effective. Tower fans have a long, slender shape and are mounted at a height of about 1 m above the floor. These fans usually have a long casing that keeps the blades out of reach, especially for children. If you are concerned about the appearance of your fan, you will not be disappointed with these. They come in a variety of sleek and discreet designs. The most efficient models have built-in ionizers that purify the air and extract dust, pollen and animal dander, a great feature if you have allergies.Because tower fans have smaller blades, they work hard in large spaces and take longer to deliver cool air than desktop fans, which is why this type of fan is suitable for people who are looking for a compact, space-saving unit that still provides enough cool air to cool a room. In fact, today, manufacturers are becoming more and more ingenious in offering users more comfort by marketing quiet column fans.

The ceiling fan

Ceiling fans create a "downdraft" by pushing warm rising air downward. Downdrafts reverse the typical direction of air movement. Instead of rising in heat, it pushes back. Then cool air rushes in to fill the void created by the lack of warm air. They can help you reduce the actual feeling of heat and lower your room temperature by about four to five degrees, regardless of the circumstances. Some ceiling fans can also reverse this mechanism and warm the room during the winter months. The direction of rotation of this type of versatile fan is then reversed, so that cool air is pushed upwards while warm air is distributed in the room, thus downwards. This type of fan usually consumes about 100 W. For the features they offer, this will save you a lot of money. In addition, some ceiling fan models come with a built-in light source. Others come with a light kit included. Ceiling fans with lights are the most decorative of all.As fans age and get older, they lose their fat and become very loud. This can be irritating to some people. Sometimes these fans can pose a great challenge to your safety if they are installed at low heights. When installing them, it is very important to take into consideration the height of all the members of your family so that no one can get injured by getting a body part caught in the ceiling fan. Unlike desk fans or tower fans, they are suitable for people who have a large room to cool and at the same time are looking for a decorative accessory for their interior or terrace.

Some

fans have been designed to be real decorative items. This is the case with some tower fans(Dyson), but especially with ceiling fans, whose different styles and finishes can complement your unique interior style.

The misting fan

Misting fans combine the airflow of a traditional fan with the cooling effect of a soft mist, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors in ultimate comfort. This type of device consists of a traditional fan and a water tank. When you turn it on, the water in the tank is pumped up through a system that compresses the water at high pressure through solid nozzles. With its high cooling capacity, the temperature will drop to 3 to 5°C after a short time when the fan is turned on. It has enough capacity for it to run at ¼ of that of an air conditioner, so it saves the maximum household power. From the mist spray function, the fan helps to balance the humidity of your home space, increasing the humidity of your skin, without causing respiratory diseases. If you have an air conditioner in your home, combine it with a misting fan, because the fan can overcome the dehumidification of the air conditioner very well. Also, the new generation misting fans are equipped with an anti-mosquito mode, which can help you sleep much better. On the other hand, the cooling capacity of a misting fan is not as fast as that of an air conditioner or even a desk fan. So when you turn on the fan, you won't feel cool immediately.Just like the other types of fans we've reviewed here, the misting fan can only cover a fairly limited space. The angle of operation is 180 ° C, so it is a little more limited than the air conditioner, but the fan can compensate. Note that this type of fan is suitable for people who need a humidifier to make the atmosphere of their home more pleasant.

The Bladeless FanThe

Dyson brand was the forerunner of this type of fan and continues to dominate the market to this day. Dyson fans incorporate complex technologies that make them quiet, efficient and safe. Their blades are invisible, but they're actually inside.

Fan or air conditioner?

The fan and the air conditioner have the same objective: to cool the interior of a room. However, they differ in many areas such as the mode of operation, price, design, efficiency, energy consumption ... If you hesitate between the 2, here are some essential points that will surely help you decide.

Fan

The fan stirs the air, which means that it only affects your body temperature and gives you a cooler feeling. It can be equipped with other functions such as a misting device or an ionizer. The device can immediately take its functions once taken out of its packaging. Moreover, if you choose a reversible fan, you will be able to use it all year round, even outside the hot season, so it will be a very profitable investment.

The fan is also much quieter than the air conditioner. Less bulky and more easily transportable (except for some models), the fan is also less energy consuming.

Air conditioner

The air conditioner literally renews the air in the room. After having sucked out the hot air, it replaces it with fresh air. However, it requires a waiting time of 24 hours after purchase before it is turned on, because the refrigerant gas needs to stabilize. An opening to the outside is imperative to pass the exhaust pipe in the case of a mobile air conditioner. As for the fixed model, installation work by professionals is mandatory.

An air conditioner is much more efficient than a simple fan, whether for cooling or heating your home. However, this also means that it is much more energy consuming. Not to mention that it is obviously much more cumbersome and difficult to install (except for the mobile models).

Verdict

Although a fan cannot lower the temperature of a room like an air conditioner, by creating a draft, it makes the room cooler. This allows you to raise your thermostat, which means reducing your energy costs by 30-40%.

Fans are available in a wide variety of styles. A model that complements your home's decor is a more attractive option than an air conditioner. Many fans, especially ceiling fans, also come with lights. They can light up a room in addition to circulating air.

Like reversible air conditioners, some fans work in both summer and winter. During the colder months, a ceiling fan can push warm air down from the ceiling and circulate it through the space to make it more comfortable.

In short, it's ideal to have both, as a fan will accentuate and optimize the effects of your air conditioner. But if you only need to cool down occasionally, a fan will suffice.

Why buy a fan?

pourquoi acheter ventilateur

The fan is the equipment of choice to enjoy coolness at an affordable price. Apart from its many advantages, it can be useful to everyone for various reasons.

To preserve your health

The main purpose of this device is to move fresh air in the room where it is located. At night, it saves you from feeling hot when you sleep. It also contributes to your productivity and gives you a better feeling of well-being, whether at home or at the office. Advantageous, it limits the risks of colds, reduces the proliferation of bacteria and molds while retaining effectively the fine particles.

A decorative object in its own right

Available in various designs, the fan is an original decorative element. With its all-purpose color such as black, gray or white combined with its avant-garde style, it fits perfectly into any decor without having to distort it.

Considerable energy savings

The fan consumes very little energy, which is very satisfying. But did you know that it can also be used as a kind of auxiliary heater in winter? The device emits warm air and can distribute it evenly throughout the room. To do this, you just need to install it near a heat source like a radiator(electric, inertia).

An equipment which ensures you a great comfort

Equipped with a fan, your home will be constantly supplied with fresh air. It automatically eliminates humidity, bad odors and smoke. The comfort of use varies according to the model. However, a simple pressure on a button (on the body of the device or via a remote control) and it will start, turn off, change speed, tilt...

Great mobility

Besides the ceiling fan, all fan models are exceptionally mobile. All you need to do is find a good location for it and it's ready to go. For example, the USB fan is highly recommended if you are looking for a mobile model.

Tips

Keeping a ceiling fan from flickering

A ceiling fan usually oscillates due to slight differences in weight between the blades. However, most come with a balancing kit that contains weights you can attach to the blades to adjust their weight and ensure they balance properly.

Use your fan at night

To cool your home more efficiently, don't turn the fan off at night. This will allow you to bring more cool air inside and push warm air outside more easily during the day.

Point the fan at the opposite wall.

Position the fan so that it points toward the opposite wall. Make sure there is no furniture or objects between the unit and the wall. In this way, the cool air will be pushed towards the wall, where it will bounce back into the room. When this cool air mixes with the warmer room air, it will cool the room.

Keep the sun out

About 30% of unwanted heat in the house comes from the windows. So pull down blinds and draw curtains to keep sunlight out of your home during the hottest part of the day. This will avoid creating a mini greenhouse effect inside.

Keep moisture out

Humid heat is more unbearable than dry heat. Humidity is one of the reasons you feel hot and sticky in the summer. To keep humidity at a comfortable level (50-60%), invest in an air dehumidifier. Buy one that turns off automatically when it reaches the desired humidity level to save energy. Use the water from the dehumidifier to water your plants.

FAQ

Do five blades provide better airflow than three?

For the most part, yes. The more blades an oscillating floor fan has, the more efficient it will be at moving air. However, performance also depends on a number of other factors, including the power of the motor, the speed at which it operates and the design of the blade itself. If these factors are up to snuff, additional blades will certainly offer superior airflow.

Should I buy two desk fans for a very hot room?

If the room is that hot, it's unlikely that several desk fans will cool you down. They will create a breeze, but for the most part, they will just blow around the warm air. To change the overall room temperature, consider investing in a portable or window air conditioner instead.

Are there safety issues associated with tower fans?

Safety is one of the main concerns of tower fan manufacturers. You can be sure that your pets or children will be safe around the fan while it is in use. The blades of these fans are difficult to access, unlike the conventional fans of yesteryear.

How do misting fans help keep cool?

Mist fans do not cool you by getting you wet. Instead, they work by evaporative cooling. The fan sends out tiny droplets of water that absorb heat from the air and then evaporate. This, coupled with the fan's airflow, helps reduce the temperature of the surrounding area.

What should I look for in a ceiling fan that I plan to use outdoors?

Outdoor use of a fan requires a special protection system. Because of this, to ensure that the fan is highly resistant to moisture, consider carefully checking its manufacturing materials and screen the motor protection system. Finally, choose a fan model that has at least an IP44 rating.
