How to choose your electric scooter

Buying an electric scooter can be a bit like buying a car, so you need to pay attention to certain points and details to make sure you don't make a mistake.

#1 - Autonomy

It refers to the distance an electric scooter can travel before running out of battery. A prudent rule of thumb is to take the range advertised by the manufacturer and divide by two. Some surveys of electric scooters show that most manufacturers overestimate their range claims by 30%. Like all batteries, over time your battery capacity will decrease. Take this into account when calculating your trips and the distance you travel on a typical day. Remember that when your scooter runs out of power, you can still give it a good push.

#2 - The weight

Weight can be an important factor if you need to fold and carry your electric scooter. Think about your commute: will you have to climb stairs? When you get to your destination, do you have an elevator? If you have to get home late or if it's raining, is your scooter light enough to carpool with your friends? Most electric scooters with a reasonable range (about 24 km) weigh about 11 kg. Anything over 13 kg will be quite difficult to carry for long periods of time. Having a handle or shoulder strap will help, and some scooters have extra wheels or a folded configuration that allows them to roll, but they will still need to be carried up stairs or lifted when putting them in the trunk of a vehicle.

#3 - Engine power

Motor power generally starts at 200 watts and goes up to 6270 watts on some scooters. For adults, we don't recommend anything less than 250 watts for everyday riding. This will work for flat surfaces and very small hills. If you live in an area with steeper hills, consider upgrading to 350 or 500 watts. Even with 500 watts, your scooter will slow down on medium-sized hills. The larger motors will not only help you accelerate up hills, but they will also get you to top speed faster.

Top speed

Speed is no longer a relevant criterion to consider if you want to buy a scooter. You just need to make sure that the scooter can reach 25 km/h. Indeed, since the decree n° 2019-1082, the maximum speed to circulate with a scooter has been limited to 25 km/h. In case of exceeding the authorized speed, the fine incurred is 1500 euros.

#4 - The suspension

The car-like suspension will allow you to easily tackle bumps and indentations in the road. With a bad suspension, you'll feel every bump you cross. If your trip is longer or over rough terrain, consider a scooter with suspension. The suspension can be attached to the front, rear, or both wheels.

#5 - Lighting

Scooters, like bikes, can have a white front light and a red rear light. If you ride after dark, both a front and rear light are required. Because of the design of electric scooters, they usually do not have highly visible tail lights. If you are going to be riding at night, consider adding red flashing tail lights to your helmet or backpack.

What about three-wheel electric scooters?

Three-wheeled scooters are very stable and therefore safer than two-wheeled ones. The platform is also much wider, which allows for better balance for the user. The three-wheeled scooter can also support a greater load and is more durable.

Three-wheeled scooters can be foldable, all-terrain or equipped with large wheels. So you can find any of the three types of electric scooters in a three-wheel version. A version that can be more robust, more powerful and especially more comfortable to use.

The biggest disadvantage of three-wheeled scooters is that they are bulkier than other versions, especially the more powerful ones (three-wheeled all-terrain scooters for example). They are also heavier and can be more difficult to maneuver in certain situations: for example, in the city, in traffic jams. Finally, they are much more expensive than their traditional counterparts.

The different types of electric scooters

Owning an electric scooter can be very beneficial for several reasons: it's easy to use, easy to learn and offers great mobility. But it depends on each type, there are three: the folding scooter, the scooter with big wheels and the all-terrain scooter. Each type of scooter has its own specificities and its efficiency (or not) depends on the use you make of it.

Foldable electric scooter

The folding electric scooter is a very popular variant of the scooter. It is generally suitable for city use: it is fast, can easily weave between cars during traffic jams and does not pose any particular problems for parking.

Advantages :

  • No parking problems: The folding electric scooter will not pose any parking problems, its compact design will allow you to take it almost anywhere, even to your office.
  • Compact: Its design makes it particularly easy to store, it does not take up much space. It will fit in a closet, or behind a door, etc.
  • Transportable: Since it is compact, transportability will not be a problem. However, if your scooter weighs more than 12 kg, even when folded, it will not be practical to transport.
  • Unbeatable in traffic: The tires on a folding scooter are usually small, as is the platform. This makes it easier to squeeze between cars in traffic jams.

Disadvantages:

  • Can only ride efficiently on flat, smooth surfaces. It is therefore mainly suitable for use in the city, as long as the road is in good condition.
  • The absence or weakness of the suspension can make it unstable when the road is not very smooth.

Who is it for?

The folding scooter is suitable for people who move a lot in the city, or who need a practical means of locomotion to go to the office.

Electric scooter with big wheels

The big wheel scooter differs from the traditional scooter by its more imposing design. The wheels are obviously larger, but also the platform. This type of scooter can be equipped with a seat. Electric scooters with the largest wheels (the ultra-fat) are somewhat reminiscent of American chopper motorcycles, minus the power. But in general, those equipped with tires of about 25 cm (10 inches) can already be considered large wheels.

Advantages:

  • Stable: The big tires help keep the scooter perfectly balanced.
  • Convenient: If you buy the model with a removable bike seat, you'll have several options when it comes to riding.
  • Sturdy: Thanks to the size of its tires, as well as the size of its platform and frame, the big wheel electric scooter has a greater weight limit. It is therefore suitable for all weight categories.
  • Solid suspension: The suspension on this type of scooter is more robust than on the folding scooter alone. It can therefore tackle more difficult surfaces (not very smooth, more uneven, with more climbs, etc.)

Disadvantages :

  • More difficult to maneuver: In heavy traffic, the size of the tires and platform can be a problem. Not always easy to navigate between cars.
  • May not be suitable for paved areas: Large wheels can be difficult to maneuver on paved areas.

Who is it for?

This type of scooter is for those looking for a durable scooter that is easy to maneuver on rough surfaces. The size of the tires increases grip on the ground, providing better traction.

All-terrain electric scooter

At first glance, the all-terrain electric scooter may look just like any other traditional scooter, but it stands out because of its power and strength. The all-terrain scooter is more powerful and can run on different types of surfaces (smooth and flat, sloping, rough, etc.). The all-terrain scooter, like the cars of the same kind, can circulate as much in town as on the roads.

Advantages :

  • Powerful and sturdy: It must be equipped with a powerful motor to be able to tackle the most uneven and difficult terrain, climb a hill, etc. Some scooters are equipped with two batteries to support the power of the machine. The frame must be made of a sturdy material to support this power. This type of scooter can support up to 180 kg, sometimes even more.
  • An efficient braking system: It is equipped with a reliable braking system, for example a hydraulic disc brake front and rear that offers you a good, but reliable braking.
  • A good suspension system: It has a good suspension system, usually one in the front and one in the back, offering a smooth and comfortable ride, even on really bad terrain.
  • Good size tires: Large enough to provide good grip on all types of terrain (smooth or rough).
  • Good riding ability: Its power combined with its stability makes it easy to maneuver in the woods, on a dirt road, or wherever you choose to ride.

Disadvantages:

  • Heavy: Its powerful motor, batteries, sturdy frame, braking and suspension system mean that this kind of scooter can weigh a lot. Up to forty kilos or more.
  • Can be difficult to maneuver in congestion: Its weight can make it difficult to handle in congestion. And its large tires may not make it easy to move around on paved surfaces.
  • Expensive: This type of scooter can be a serious investment compared to other scooters.

Who is it for?

The all-terrain scooter is for those who love the outdoors and want to tackle rough and difficult terrain, so they need a rugged machine.

Why buy an adult folding electric scooter?

Owning an electric scooter has a lot of advantages, the first being that you can easily get around with it. And even though scooter regulations have tightened up a bit since the 2019-1082 decree, the benefits are still considerable.

It is affordable

An electric scooter certainly costs a lot less than a motorcycle or a car. You can get a top of the range scooter for just a few hundred euros. Some manufacturers are investing heavily in reducing manufacturing costs while improving quality.

It's electric

This is a huge advantage. An electric scooter is cheaper to run than traditional fuel vehicles. The energy it consumes does not weigh as much on the budget.

The cost of maintenance

An electric scooter is cheaper to maintain than a motorcycle or car. For example, some scooters have a revolutionary airless, honeycomb-style rear tire: goodbye flat tires.

It's easily portable

An electric scooter is usually light enough to be carried with you on the bus, train or subway. And some can even be easily folded up to be stored in compact spaces.

Saving time

Because a scooter is small and easy to use, you can navigate traffic more easily. You'll get where you're going faster, while sparing yourself the stress of long waits.

No need for a driver's license

If you don't have a driver's license yet, the electric scooter will make your life easier: because of its limited speed, you will be able to ride it freely, even without a license. But be careful, this does not exempt you from knowing the rules of the road so as not to put yourself or others in danger.

The best brands of electric scooters

In our opinion, the best brands of electric scooters in 2022 are :

E-Twow
Xiaomi
NANROBOT
Ninebot
Speedway

The E-Twow (Electric Two Wheels) brand is part of a large international concept based in China. It is focused on offering a new era in urban mobility through ingenious electric vehicles. The brand offers excellent quality machines for a fairly affordable price. In 2017, the E-Twow portable and foldable electric scooter won a gold medal for best invention at the 45th Geneva International Invention Exhibition.

Although it is best known for its smartphones, Xiaomi has managed to create a strong position for itself in the personal mobility device market. The Chinese brand is known for offering very competitive prices, but without sacrificing quality.

NANROBOT was founded with the vision of making high quality, practical and affordable electric scooters. This brand wants to offer a practical, solid and fun way of transportation at the same time.

Ninebot is another Chinese brand that has been around for almost 10 years now. It is known for the quality of its products, and it has a pretty good brand image. Enhanced by its close connection with Xiaomi and the 2015 acquisition of rival American brand Segway.

Speedway is a brand of the Korean company Minimotor. With 20 years of experience now, Minimotor launched the Speedway brand in 2014. A brand that has remarkable capabilities thanks to its proven expertise.

Tips

Wear standard safety equipment.

Always wear a helmet to protect your head and, if necessary, a mouth guard. Elbow and knee straps protect these areas from scratches and bumps in case of a fall. Gloves help improve your grip on the handlebars. Electric scooters are, for the most part, safe, but it's best to be well prepared.

Check the tires.

Always

check the scooter's tires before using it. A quick check before an outing or short run can be very helpful to ensure your safety on the ride.

Be aware of possible obstacles.

Always watch out for obstacles, even small ones like potholes, bumps and crevices. These obstacles are some of the main reasons scooter accidents happen. Stay focused, carefully avoid the obstacle or slow down and stop if necessary.

Avoid slippery surfaces.

Be

even more careful when riding a scooter on slippery, wet surfaces such as marble tiles, metal surfaces, wet asphalt and muddy sidewalks. Water reduces the grip of the tires, which affects the balance of the scooter and can cause accidents. Always ride at a slow speed on wet ground.

Do not use your scooter in stormy weather.

Although

wet weather can make riding a scooter very unsafe, with practice and a lot of dexterity, it is still possible to maneuver it on fairly overcast days without too much danger. However, it is absolutely not recommended to go out with it in case of storm. In this case, indeed, the risk of being struck by lightning is high, so it is better to be very careful.

FAQ

Which electric scooter to choose?

In our opinion, the best electric scooter for most people is the E-Twow S2 Booster. This product has the best value for money on the market. However, depending on your needs, this product may not be right for you. To find the best mascara for you, we invite you to read the relevant section in our buying guide.

This is probably the number one question most people ask. Electric scooters are reliable because they are more stable than they look. That being said, there is always a risk. The key is to have proper safety provisions in place when using them.

Do I need safety equipment?

Always make sure you wear your safety equipment, including gloves, helmet and other protective gear. These can provide additional protection against accidents.

Do I need a driver's license for an electric scooter?

No. As with bicycles, you can drive your electric scooter on cycle paths. And as with bicycles, you don't need a license or a helmet to ride an electric scooter.

Do I need insurance for my electric scooter?

Since October 2019, civil insurance is mandatory for electric scooters. People who rent their scooters are also required to check their rental agreement for this, or to take out insurance.
