See priceThe Ikra ILH 3000 A is a powerhouse, as evidenced by its 3,000 W. Its shredding system accepts plants up to 44 mm in diameter without any problems. And in case of a blockage, you can activate the return function, which pulls the material out by itself. The same applies to the automatic branch feed function, which also works by itself. The collection container of this electric shredder has a capacity of 60 L. Among the accessories, there is a pusher, which is always useful to avoid getting your fingers caught in the gears!
Einhell delivers this inexpensive electric shredder. A simple model, but still capable of shredding plants of 40 mm in diameter, with a large funnel that facilitates the shredding.
See priceEinhlell is probably one of the most underrated brands of garden tools. Yet, the German manufacturer offers great deals for small budgets. With a power of 2,000 W, the Einhell GC-RS 2845 CB has a maximum cutting diameter of 400 mm. Add to this the 50 L waste collection container and the 40 rpm rotation speed of the cylinder shredding system. In case of a jam, you don't have to worry about it because this tool has a direction of rotation switch. However, like all electric shredders, the noise level remains excessive (93 dB).
If you don't want to compromise on quality and power, the Bosch AXT 25 TC is undoubtedly one of the best electric shredders available today! Its shredding capacity is up to 230 kg/h.
351 £ on CdiscountThe Bosch AXT 25 TC is no slouch. Thanks to its 2500 W output, this electric shredder easily shreds branches and shrubs up to 45 mm in diameter. The torque of the shredding system is extremely high, around 650 Nm. You can easily reach a throughput of 230 kg/h, which is good to know if you have a huge amount of shrubs and vines to shred. Accessories include a green waste pusher and a 53 L collection container. The Block Release system solves blockage problems without dismantling the funnel.
This very simple shredder will save you time. Its power allows it to shred the hardest branches, up to 45 mm in diameter. Note the overload protection.
238 £ on DartyAt the editors', we have a soft spot for Ryobi. But it's hard to be indifferent when you see the quality of all the DIY and gardening tools the Japanese brand has produced. And for this comparison, we recommend the Ryobi RSH3045U, an excellent electric shredder. The 3,000 W motor, 55 L container, 45 mm cutting diameter and 40 rpm rotation speed are all on its business card. Let's not forget the overload protection, the reverse rotation and the classic transport features (wheels, handles...).

The best power depends on the cutting system, the type of shredding and the diameter of your branches. To help you decide, choose a powerful machine if your plants are large and thick. This way, you won't have to worry about blockages. If the diameter of the branches is about 35 mm, you should get a 2000 W machine. Between 38 mm and 45 mm, a 2200 W device will be useful, and at 50 mm, you will need at least 2500 W.
The weight of the electric shredder should be considered because this element influences the comfort of use. A lightweight device weighing 15 kg, for example, is easy to transport. However, the more powerful the device is, the heavier it becomes. When you have to choose between two models with identical characteristics, always prefer a model with wheels.
The noise level is expressed in decibels (dB) and varies between 85 and 105 dB. While the electric grinder is generally quieter, the motor with the rotary cutting system is quieter. Because of its lower speed than other systems, it emits 88 decibels at most. Fortunately, most of the models in our selection are quiet. Still, protect your ears when using them.
Before any maintenance, turn off (and then unplug the shredder if it is electric) and wait until the shredder has finished shredding.
The
electric shredder is easier to use when you start it up, as it requires no adjustment. As for the convenience of the cutting systems, a pusher (available as an option) must be used for the cutting systems with disc and rotary knife holder to push the branches into the chipper.
Considering the size of the mulcher, if it folds up, it's better, because with the hedge trimmer, pole pruner and lawn mower, you'll quickly fill your garage or garden shed! If it's hard for you to choose among the folding shredders, simply turn to a space-saving or small device.
Even though manufacturers guarantee the safety of their electric shredders, as a precautionary measure, wear personal protective equipment:
If you encounter a blockage, turn the shredder off and wait until it has finished shredding and the cutting attachment has stopped before removing the blockage using gloves and a brush.
Avoid chipping conifers if possible to extend the life of your cutting equipment. Keep animals and children away from the chipping area, especially from where the chipped material is disposed of.
The blade holder is mainly located on electric shredders. It is equipped with knives mounted on a rotating holder. This type of shredder offers a speed of almost 2,000 rpm. With this cutting system, small branches and leaves can be shredded quickly. However, this tool is suitable for small plants up to 35 mm in diameter. It is suitable for occasional use in a limited area of 300 m². Finally, note that it is a low-powered machine.
The
rotor is an integral part of both electric and thermal models. It is particularly quiet and can shred branches of about 50 mm in diameter. It is then more powerful and is suitable for gardens of nearly 500 m². This device is especially suitable for coniferous shrubs (soft wood), hedges and branches. It shreds plants much more gently than the blade disc shredder. It operates at only about 40 revolutions per minute, resulting in a very thick shredded material that is perfect for composting.
The
operation of the turbine mill is almost similar to that of a rotor mill. However, it is much more powerful, but it is also suitable for branches up to 50 mm in diameter. This device is not very sensitive to clogging. It is recommended for professional use in a garden larger than 500 m². If you have an orchard and a lot of hardwood to shred, you should invest in a turbine shredder. Here too, the result of the shredding is a thick shred. Finally, you can also turn your green waste into compost.
The edge of the shredder blade is sharpened when it is no longer cutting.
The most common type of shredder is the electric shredder. It is inexpensive and for this reason it is very popular with gardeners. It is also appreciated for its manoeuvrability and flexibility of use. Its small size and the wide variety of models make this type of device even more interesting. However, its power is reduced compared to that of thermal shredders.
Thanks to their high engine power, thermal shredders can use blade technology on the rotary tables or on the rotor, while maintaining a high output rate and a great capacity to process the most complex branches. This allows for quick turnaround of fine or thick chippings and the convenience of blade replacement and sharpening. However, many users do not appreciate the low speed of their thermal unit.
Electric shredders are generally sufficient for a medium-sized garden (less than 500 m2) and are rarely used. They are less expensive and yet they do their job well.
Save time
When purchasing, make sure you have read and understood the instructions for operating the tool. While some grinders are almost ready to use, others require tools to set up the unit. The number of parts to assemble, the need for tools, the time required... all of these will help you get your new machine up and running more or less quickly.
Reduce the footprint
It
is sometimes possible to remove the chute (in a simple way) so that the shredder is space-saving and can be stored under the work surface
.
Use the shredder at the right time
In
deference to your neighbors, you should use your thermal shredder only during permitted hours during the week
.
Wintering
In
winter, get rid of the vegetation inside your shredder and clean the outlet. Remember to unplug the shredder and wrap it in a protective cover. Finally, place it in the garage or garden shed.
Increase the life of the shredder
To
maximize the life of your shredder, try to avoid softwoods
.

The lightness, maneuverability and small size of electric shredders are the main reasons why gardeners prefer this type of shredder.
On the mechanical side, oil the wheels, axles and metal parts.
The chute is located on top of the machine and is a feed hopper into which the branches are fed. The shape of the hopper (funnel-shaped) facilitates the loading of the chipper and increases the feed rate.
Specifically, the turbine is a rotating cone on which the cutting blades are shaped around their entire circumference. It is not possible to replace the blades of the turbine.
