How to choose your Electric mountain bike

Regardless of price, electric mountain bikes use the same operating principle. While pedaling, the rider activates the electric motor, which increases pedaling power and reduces physical effort. There are different criteria to consider when choosing a bike.

#1 - The framework

You can choose between 2 types of frames: rigid and suspension.

  • The length of the frame's down tube varies depending on the intended use. A longer down tube is ideal for cross-country riding.
  • Downhill, freeride, and enduro require a faster ride. In this case, a shorter down tube is better.

The material of the frame is also very important.

  • Most of the time, manufacturers offer electric mountain bike frames made of aluminum or carbon fiber.
  • Steel, which has long been shunned, has recently come back into favor.
  • Titanium alloy is a very rare material, very difficult to work with and very expensive.

The choice of frame material will therefore be primarily a matter of budget. On average, electric mountain bikes with carbon frames are more expensive than aluminum models. However, the advantages of a carbon frame in terms of riding performance are minimal. Carbon gives manufacturers more freedom in frame design, allowing them to create a more beautiful bike.

#2 - The engine

Regulations limit the motor power of electric bikes to 250W. This restriction also applies to electric mountain bikes. But when it comes to motorization, torque, expressed in Newton-meters, abbreviated Nm, matters more than power. At the very least, an electric mountain bike suitable for a variety of uses will have a torque of 50-60 Nm.

There are mainly two types of motors when it comes to electric ATVs: mid-drive motors and hub drive motors.

  • Intermediate drive motors are located on the bottom bracket (the place where the pedals attach to the ATV frame). Most electric ATVs are equipped with this type of motor for various reasons. But the main reason is that having the weight of the motor centered and low helps keep the ride stable and balanced.
  • Hub drive motors are located inside the hub of the rear wheel. Hub drive motors send the power from the pedal directly to the rear wheel, giving you the feeling of being pushed. Front hub drive motors behave much like front wheel drive cars. They also allow you to use a standard bicycle drivetrain at the rear of the bike.

#3 - Battery life

Almost all ATV batteries are lithium batteries. In addition to their more reasonable weight, they charge faster and last longer. The more amp hours (Ah) or watt hours (Wh), the more miles the battery can travel.

It is difficult to establish an acceptable average range when it comes to electric ATVs. This is because many factors affect range, including speed, outdoor conditions, and assistance used. The lowest assist level, often called eco mode, will use less battery power. The highest assist level, usually called turbo, will draw heavily on the battery, decreasing its charge the fastest. The control screen usually placed on the handlebars always displays how much battery power you have left while riding.

#4 - The weight

As with cars, electric ATVs have a maximum weight limit. This weight is specified by the manufacturer of the mountain bike and ensures that all components of the bike are capable of carrying the maximum load specified. A bike, regardless of type, is always limited by the weakest component. Thus, the total allowable weight is calculated from the weight of the bike plus the weight of the rider including all equipment (helmet, backpack, clothing, etc.).

We still see bikes with very low weight ratings, where a rider weighing as little as 90 kg may already be too heavy. Legally, the total weight limit for any bike must be at least 120 kg. All the electric mountain bikes we present in this selection have a rating between 100 kg and 160 kg. At first, that may seem like a lot, but subtract 20 kg to 25 kg for the weight of the bike and you're often left with only 100 kg for the rider, clothing, gear, and other accessories.

#5 - The derailleur

At present, almost all of the best mountain bikes ride with 29" wheels with rims up to 2.6" wide or have a mix of narrower 29" front wheels and a wider 27.5" rear wheel. This configuration has its advantages. However, disadvantages arise with breakdowns and carrying spare parts, as you will always need to carry two different sizes and you will not be able to swap front and rear tires.

In the end, of course, it's the integration of the wheels into the overall design of the electric mountain bike that matters here as well, not whether a bike has 27.5″, 29″ or mixed wheels! The tread is even more important than the width or size of the tires.

#6 - The brakes

Besides the frame, motor or battery, there are also other elements that could influence your choice of electric mountain bike:

  • Pedal Assist Activation and Pedal Feel : The more performance-oriented the mountain bike, the smoother and more responsive its pedal assist will be.
  • Pedal Assist Levels: Most electric bikes offer 3 or 4 levels of assistance, allowing you to conserve battery power (eco mode) or get more speed and torque (turbo or boost mode).
  • Built-in accessories: Many electric ATVs now come with a range of built-in accessories, including a lighting system, a luggage rack, a control screen, a safety system, etc.

Which electric mountain bike for which use?

Hiking

Do you like to ride your bike and are you looking for an electric mountain bike to limit your efforts? Choose a semi-rigid model, which will limit the weight of the bike. A semi-suspended electric mountain bike is preferable for greater comfort.

The motor will most often have 40 to 50 Nm of torque and the battery will develop 400 W. Choose 27.5 or 29 inch wheels, or the 27.5+ hybrid format. The latter is perfect for electric bikes in terms of comfort, stability, traction and versatility.

Cross-country

Preferably, opt for a semi-rigid mountain bike with an aluminum frame. Choose 29-inch wheels with forks between 80 and 120 mm. This way, you will have more speed on the rolling parts and in the brittle. Carbon fiber models, very high end, are still rare for cross-country.

For the engine, favour a big torque. You will need it a lot during sudden and lively accelerations. It will also be useful on linear courses, offering a riding sensation close to that of a classic bike.

All-Mountain

All-suspension electric bikes are highly recommended, if possible with 130 to 150 mm of travel. Concerning the wheels, the 27,5+ knows an important development for a few years because of the versatility, the comfort and the stability which they get.

As far as the battery is concerned, a large autonomy will be necessary to avoid breakdowns during the ride. Nowadays, manufacturers are increasingly including 500W batteries, making them more affordable. If you can't find one, take a second battery with you.

Enduro

All-suspended is the standard for electric enduro mountain bikes. Because of the constraints, you will hardly find a carbon fibre frame suitable for this purpose. A 500 W motor with a lot of torque is the best choice.

The choice of wheels will depend on your riding style. Do you prefer speed and precise piloting? Or do you prefer to combine comfort and stability? 27.5" wheels will satisfy thrill seekers while 27.5+ will offer more riding comfort.

Downhill or freeride

Freeride and downhill give very little importance to weight and pedaling efficiency. In fact, you will spend most of your time riding downhill! The interest of the electric motor lies then in the possibility of linking the runs without getting tired on the links.

To take the shocks well, opt for an all-suspended aluminium frame with 200 mm of travel and 27.5 inch wheels. Because of the rather short distances, a 400 Wh battery will suffice. But the motor should have enough torque so that you don't feel the weight of the bike.

EAB or speedbike?

Finally, there are two types of electric mountain bikes: electrically assisted mountain bikes or EABVs and speedbikes. The VTTAE is the kind of electric mountain bike you can find everywhere, with a 250 W motor and an assistance up to 25 km/h only activated by pedaling.

The speedbike offers assistance up to 45 km/h. Its rarity comes from the very strict legislation that governs its use. In addition to being prohibited on cycle paths, it is necessary to have a vehicle registration document and a number plate. In addition, the speedbike must be insured and require motorcycle protections.

How to maintain an electric mountain bike?

The electric mountain bike is made for runs in the woods or in the mud. After each ride, a thorough cleaning should be done, taking into account the warnings related to the electronic components.

Cleaning and drying the electric ATV

Before cleaning, disassemble all electrical components. This includes the control panel, the battery and other equipment such as the GPS. These components should be washed separately with the utmost care.

Once you have finished removing the electronics, rinse the bike with a hose. Keep a distance, so that the water falls like rain to avoid damaging the most sensitive parts.

Once you have removed the larger dirt and mud, the electric mountain bike can be cleaned with a sponge and soapy water. Try to get into every nook and cranny and use a toothbrush to degrease the chainrings, derailleur, cassette and chain.

After cleaning, dry all parts that may collect or retain water. Pay particular attention to drying the drivetrain, screws, computer mounts and battery mounts. In general, sunlight, a rag and a clean towel should be sufficient to dry an electric ATV.

Cleaning the electronic components

Give priority to a wet cloth for cleaning the battery, dashboard and other electronic components. Be careful not to touch the plug when passing by. Take the opportunity to service the cleaned parts. And make sure the battery and console are dry before reinstalling them.

Lubrication

Lubricating the chain allows you to ride smoothly and avoid rust. To do this, pour a few steady drops of WD-40 or other lubricant over the chain as you turn the pedal back. Continue until the chain is completely lubricated.

Gear and brake cables also require special treatment with a fine spray lubricant. Apply the product to the affected parts. Avoid using a lubricant. It will take a long time to dry and will collect dust and residue.

Once lubrication is complete, visually inspect your electric ATV, including the wheels, tire pressure, rims, brakes, clamps, steering and spokes.

The different types of Electric mountain bikes

Whether it's a semi-rigid or full suspension model, there are three distinct categories of electric ATVs. Lightweight models, full power models and multipurpose models.

This segment blurs the lines between electric mountain bikes and conventional mountain bikes, offering an enhanced riding experience with much lighter handling on steep trails, while being easier to pick up and throw in the back of your van. New electric mountain bike models in this category are starting to appear rapidly.

Benefits: Lightweight electric ATVs offer a more natural ride quality and feel. Assistance levels are quite high. With a light electric ATV, you will be able to handle technical and difficult uphill sections better.

Disadvantages: On straight, fast sections of a trail, they are noticeably slower than a full-powered electric ATV.

Who is it for? Lightweight electric ATVs are perfect for anyone who enjoys a very natural riding experience, needs little support, and often rides with friends who ride non-motorized ATVs.

If you're looking for the most powerful motor found on an electric ATV, look to the full-power models. Many models in this category are equipped with the TQ motor. This popular motor offers a maximum torque of 120 Nm.

Advantages: Full power electric ATVs really shine on the downhill. The extra weight of the frame and motor helps the suspension react better to small bumps. And even on climbs, there's very little feeling of slowing down.

Disadvantages: An electric mountain bike certainly offers more power, but that comes at a cost; the bike is heavier.

Who is it for? Full power mountain bikes are primarily intended for seasoned riders, even professionals, and certainly not for amateurs or those who are riding for the first time.

Electric or mechanical ATV ?

Electric mountain bike

An electric mountain bike is a mountain bike with an electric motor that assists the rider. An eMTB is a mountain bike with a built-in motor that assists the rider when pedaling. It has no throttle, so if you are not pedaling, the motor does not support you. In most countries, electric mountain bikes, also known as power-assisted mountain bikes, only provide motor assistance up to a certain speed limit in order to remain classified as bicycles. This limit is 25 km/h in Europe and 32 km/h in the United States.

On the other hand, the electric ATV makes riding more accessible. Your riding frequency and distances will increase. If you are tired after a long day at work, it is easier to get out of the house knowing that the motor will help you cope with the climbs.

In addition to being a lot of fun, you'll also find that you're using your electric ATV for your daily commute, as a family tool. Having a motor opens up a new and unlimited potential that electric ATVs cannot match.

Mechanical ATV

A mechanical ATV is an ATV without a motor. It is the good old classic ATV, which moves forward only by the power of your legs. For many people, climbing is just a way to finish the descent, and if that's the case, an electric ATV will take the fun out of climbing a rough hill by leg power alone.

In addition, a mechanical ATV will be much less expensive than an electric ATV of the same category. A motorized ATV will also require more regular maintenance and the increased torque will consume transmission parts more quickly than a non-motorized bike covering the same distance.

Finally, with a mechanical mountain bike, you can spend as much time as you want on your bike, unlike an electric mountain bike where the autonomy will be limited by the battery.

Verdict

What's the point of having the best electric ATV if you don't have anyone to ride with? Ultimately, this is the factor that can most influence your decision.

With an electric ATV, you'll ride farther, get more downhill in the same amount of time, and ride uphill without too much difficulty. However, if your friends don't have an electric mountain bike, you'll be on your own. Or, instead, you'll pedal slowly on group rides while your companions put in more effort.

Why buy an electric ATV?

Yes, the electric mountain bike is still a bike. You will have to pedal to get assistance from the battery-powered motor. However, it has many advantages.

For comfortable rides and easy climbs

With an electric mountain bike, you can reach the end of your ride without breaking a sweat! Moreover, the effort expended with maximum assistance on a flat course is equivalent to walking. Older athletes, people with joint pain or those who cannot afford to expend a lot of energy will be delighted.

To go fast and far

Electric assistance allows you to cover a longer distance without getting tired. In addition to going far, the electric mountain bike will make you go faster, regardless of your age or level of experience. In fact, many people use their electric mountain bikes to get to work.

To discover or rediscover the pleasures of mountain biking

To gradually get back into mountain biking after a period of convalescence or years without riding, the electric ATV is ideal. People with diabetes, heart disease, cancer or joint disease are particularly concerned. It is also an excellent way to stay in shape.

The best brands of Electric mountain bikes

In our opinion, the best brands of Electric mountain bikes in 2022 are :

BH

Tips

Make sure the battery is fully charged.

It may not seem like a big deal. But it's easy to forget to charge a battery after a hard day's work or when you've got too much on your plate. Establish a routine to plug in your battery the night before each off-road ride.

Pedal harder at the right time.

Accelerating from a standstill or near-standstill wastes a lot of energy. Pedaling hard as the ATV picks up speed will save your strength as well as the battery charge. Also, pedal harder to get over hills and go easy on flat surfaces.

Relax and enjoy a slow drive.

Wind resistance will force you to put in a lot of physical effort and drain the battery. To go farther and longer, reduce your pace. This way you reduce wind drag.

Carry a second battery.

If

you have a long ride, you will need more range, often beyond what a battery alone can provide. Logically, you'll need 1 or 2 extra batteries to avoid running out of power and finishing on leg power alone.

Check your tire pressure.

Don't over-inflate your tires to avoid overly physical driving. Also, under inflated tires tend to slow down the electric ATV. Before each ride, check your tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge. If necessary, take one along for your ride.

The first thing you really need to adjust to before your electric ATV getaway is braking. Stopping distances are longer and the later you brake, the quicker you'll find yourself in trouble. You soon realize that, just like on a downhill bike, a little extra weight can be a lifesaver, though.

Whatever way you planned your electric mountain bike tour, one thing is certain: you need to be able to get your bearings. If you planned the tour with a book or map, you'll probably take them with you and consult them while riding. Most of these routes are based on existing signage, so they can be followed without the need to constantly check the map or study the route.

If something goes wrong, don't get angry, deal with the situation with a smile. Always be prepared for accidents and expect that things will not go as you planned. This will put you in the right frame of mind and help you prepare yourself psychologically in case something goes wrong. Sometimes the silliest situations or mishaps can lead to exciting encounters. If you are riding in a group, remember that your bad mood, your bad attitude will end up ruining the mood for everyone.
