The lithium-ion or lithium-polymer battery of a high-end electric bicycle is characterized by a high capacity, at least 500 Wh. To get a better idea of the range, refer to the capacity in ampere-hours, 11 or 14 Ah. The higher the capacity, the higher the autonomy, although this rule is not 100% reliable. The autonomy also depends on other parameters: the weight of the cyclist, the slopes, the direction and speed of the wind, the condition of the tires, the load carried... And over time, an EV battery will eventually become dull. However, big brand batteries last for several hundred charge and discharge cycles.
Bosch, Brose or Yamaha , the ideal remains a motor placed in the crankset. This type of motor is the most common on the market. If necessary, opt for a motor in the rear hub. The main advantages of a motor in the crankset are excellent weight distribution and assistance adapted to the effort involved. The lower center of gravity of the bike due to the balance provided by the motor in the crankset also makes it easier to ride. Finally, the electric bike will have more autonomy, as proven bythe tests opposing VAE with rear motor and VAE with motor in the crankset. Count 80 Nm of torque at least.
You will not see fixed assistance called "all or nothing" on a high-end electric bike. Although much appreciated for the boost it gives at startup, this technology provides unrealistic riding sensations. This is why manufacturers prefer progressive or evolving assistance. Its operation is simple. Force sensors located in the motor adjust the assistance provided according to the pedaling speed. This dosage offers a bluffing realism to the piloting, which makes the top-of-the-range electric bike more comfortable and increases the autonomy of the battery.
High-end or cheap, the weight remains the big weak point of the electric bike. Except for electric road bikes, the weight is generally between 20 and 25 kg. When the bike is running, we don't take it into account. But lifting an EAB to climb stairs or pedaling without electric assistance quickly becomes an ordeal. And when transporting it in a car, it is impossible to mount it on the roof.
EABs ride fast. They easily reach 25 km/h, at which point the electronic throttle comes into play. Given the weight of over 20 kg, powerful and comfortable brakes are required. The braking system should be activated by a simple touch of the fingers, which is why V-brakes are not recommended. A high-end electric bike is usually equipped with hydraulic disc brakes. Despite the fact that maintenance is quite delicate, especially to remove air bubbles, this type of brake stops an EAB quickly, regardless of its speed. Replace the linings once or twice a year, especially if you ride in the city, where the brakes are very solicited.
Simano Nexus, XT, SRAM, Deore... These models require little maintenance. Perfect for city riding, Shimano Nexus hub gears never blow the chain. In all cases, prefer a transmission with continuous shifting to one that shifts only when stopped.
Ona city bike, favor the typical Dutchupright riding position. An open frame will make it easier to straddle, stop, and carry a child. The wheels should not be too wide. If possible, replace the supplied tires with puncture-resistant ones. And consider the frame size, always provided by the seller. Suitable for city and country riding, the VTC or mountain bike has a different frame profile than the Dutch bike, with a crossbar for more stability. For the mountain bike, you will have the choice between the semi-rigid frame and the full suspension frame. Finally, the frame will be aluminum or carbon, preferably with an integrated battery.
Fixed to the handlebars, the console is sort of the on-board computer of the electric bike. It informs on the level of assistance, the remaining load, the distance traveled... Some even act as a GPS, not to mention the Bluetooth and USB connection. The console of a high-end EAB should be touch-sensitive and removable.
Just like with a mechanical bike, you should perform periodic maintenance on the chain, cassette and brake pads, not to mention the wheels. However, be more careful because the motorization encourages you to ride at higher speeds.
As a result, several parts will wear out more quickly, especially the brakes and the chain. The chain is the most fragile part of the electric bike, so check it every time you have to ride a long distance. This will avoid the inconvenience of having to push or carry your vehicle. It is advisable to have a regular check-up with a retailer authorized by the bike manufacturer.
The main advantage offered by the electric bicycle is the presence of a motor which allows to reduce the efforts made. This aspect is very important when climbing hills or on a long distance trip. This type of bike is however heavier and more expensive.
The mechanical bike is what you might call a "normal bike". It doesn't have a motor, so it works your muscles more than the electric model. Moreover, it seems easier to maintain (unless you find a high-end mechanical road bike) and costs less.
If you can afford it and don't want to arrive at work or appointments dripping with sweat, an electric bike is the perfect choice. For the purists, the overachievers and those who lack the means, a mechanical bike is the ideal choice. It's up to you to decide what you need.
The 2.0 revolution of the small queen is underway. France will have 1 million EVs in circulation by 2024-2025. Far from being a simple fashion effect, this means of transport offers comfort and practicality. Even more so if it is top of the range!
12 times less polluting than the car!
Safety and health benefits are not everything. The craze for the electric bike also has its origins in ecology. Indeed, an EAB emits 22 g/km of CO2, compared to 21 g/km for a conventional bicycle and 271 g/km for a car. Moreover, 60% of home-to-work journeys are less than 1 km long. Reserve the car for long journeys.
Suitable for all ages.
Ever more versatile, ever more comfortable and ever more modern, the electric bicycle is breaking down prejudices. Every year, it attracts more and more young people, in search of practical transportation tools or thrills. And according to statistics, 9 out of 10 EAB users are under 70 years old.
Safe and healthy
Riding a bike is safer than riding a car or scooter. The statistics on road accidents prove this every year. On average, a person is 20 times less likely to die on a bicycle than on the other two means of transport mentioned. As a sport in its own right, cycling adds 3.7 years to life expectancy, compared to 3.2 years for walking.
Designed to last for years
High-end means that the electric bike has been manufactured using premium quality parts. In other words, the EAB is robust, capable of withstanding intensive, even extreme use. Although expensive, the high-end electric bike is a long-term investment.
Perfect for city riding or sports
For city dwellers, the EAB allows them to arrive at work and appointments on time, without breaking a sweat. The top-of-the-range EAB also offers a comfort that the cheaper models do not. Less physical and with an autonomy exceeding 100 km, it extends the recreational or sports outings.
in the UK, 90% of stolen bicycles have not been properly secured. And one out of two bicycle thefts occurs in a courtyard or building corridor. Top-of-the-range bicycles, especially electric ones, are the most affected by this scourge. However, there are solutions: remove the battery if the bike is left outside, always attach the bike to a fixed point with a quality lock, use several locks at once, install a geolocation system, mark the bike, etc. In addition, it is advisable to insure a high-end electric bike to cover theft and breakage in the event of an accident. Most insurers offer a choice of both options.
The diagram below will help you to get an idea of the typical prices for each price range (entry-level, mid-range and high-end).
However, more expensive does not necessarily mean better.
We therefore advise you to always consult our ranking before deciding, rather than blindly relying on price ranges.
