How to choose your corkscrew

A bottle of wine, whatever its age, can only be opened with one instrument: the corkscrew. However, there is a wide variety of them. Choosing the right model is sometimes complex. To make your task easier, here are the criteria to take into account:
choisir tire-bouchon

#1 - The type of corkscrew

If there is only one electric corkscrew, the manual models are quite numerous:

  • The lever corkscrew: also called travel corkscrew, this accessory shows an unequalled mobility. Its use requires a little elbow grease.
  • The corkscrew sommelier or double lever : it offers more precision while being easy to handle. However, it is not suitable for a novice.
  • The corkscrew with wings, butterfly or Charles de Gaulle : although it has several names, this model makes use of the lever effect so that you do not have to make much effort. It is quite bulky compared to the double lever model.
  • The T-shaped corkscrew : extracting the cork requires more strength and skill than the other models. Without support, you risk damaging the cork.
  • The screw or bell corkscrew : perfectly adapted to beginners, it offers an unparalleled stability to the bottle.
  • The corkscrew with blades or butler's corkscrew : the extracted cork remains intact. It requires dexterity and a lot of skill.
  • The compressed air corkscrew : even if it is very practical, it is rarely used. It introduces air into your wine bottle, which often alters its properties.
  • The electric corkscrew : last but not least, it meets all the needs for cork extraction. Battery operated, it can be heavy.

#2 - The ease of use

A good corkscrew must be both elegant, practical and adapted to your needs. If you are still a neophyte, prefer an electric model or one with a non-slip handle. The grip will be easy. On the other hand, a corkscrew with complex features is better suited to a regular or an expert in the field.

#3 - The size

As is the case with all kitchen utensils, considering the size of the corkscrew is very important. In case you lack space for storage or rarely use it, favor a small-sized model. On the contrary, a larger model, made of sturdy and durable material, will accompany you for many years in all your special events.

#4 - The material

A corkscrew designed with quality materials displays a better lifespan. In this sense, you have the choice between wood, steel and aluminum. So make sure the propeller is made of stainless steel. With a non-slip handle, you will enjoy an excellent operating experience. The combination of several materials can also be advantageous (wood and stainless steel, silicone and stainless steel...).

#5 - The length of the worm

With a wick that is too short, the removal of the stopper becomes more laborious. On the other hand, if the wick is too long, you will pierce the cork, breaking it in the process. In order to find the good compromise, we advise you to choose a corkscrew with a long worm of 4,5 cm at least.

How to use a corkscrew?

The use of a corkscrew varies from one type to another. In order to give you a precise idea, let's discover how the most popular models work:

The corkscrew: push the worm into the cork. Put the metal support on the bottle and pull upwards to remove it. Once you are 2/3 of the way through, lever the cork out through the lower support.

The butterfly corkscrew: you only have to press on the base of the neck of your bottle. As you turn the handle of the corkscrew (introducing the whole worm), the wings go up and open. You just have to lower them to extract the cork.

The"T"corkscrew: penetrate the cork with the worm and then pull it out by holding the neck firmly.

The corkscrew in the shape of a bell or a screw: integrate the spiral in the cork. Make sure that the blades are well introduced by the sides of the neck and turn until complete extraction.

The electric corkscrew: the easiest to use, requires no special knowledge. Simply place it on the neck, press the appropriate button and let it do the rest.

The air corkscrew: insert the needle into the cork so that the air can get in. Pump the corkscrew 3 to 6 times until it is removed.

The different types of corkscrews

It is not possible to choose the right corkscrew without knowing the different types of models that exist. To make it simple, we have classified them in 2 categories: manual and electric.

Manual corkscrew

Tire-bouchon manuel

This is the classic version. You will need elbow grease to extract the cork from the bottle. The manual corkscrew is equipped with a full worm and generally weighs less and is less expensive than the electric one. Some models offer additional features such as a cap cutter or bottle opener. Included in the category of manual corkscrews are T-shaped, worm, Charles-de-Gaulle, limonadier, sommelier, professional, lever (single or double), wall-mounted and bimetal models.

Electric corkscrew

Tire-bouchon électrique

As a general rule, the electric corkscrew or automatic bottle opener is in the form of a long vertical cylinder composed of a motor (battery-operated), 2 buttons used to push the worm and extract the cork. It is the most appropriate for those who suffer from hand pain such as arthritis. The drill bit punctures the cork when the button is pressed. Many models are equipped with an LED light indicating the direction of rotation of its spirals.

The air corkscrew

Instead of the worm, the air corkscrew includes a needle. Every 2 hollows, its cylindrical handle is used as air tank while the point is used as syringe. It is also equipped with a ring expeller and a protective bell.

Charles de Gaulle or wall-mounted corkscrew?

Charles de Gaulle corkscrew

Just like the classic models, the Charles de Gaulle corkscrew has a worm, a handle and a lever. It is distinguished by its shape and its style since the rod with rack is prolonged by a worm in the shape of propeller while being topped with a handle which takes place of bottle opener. All of these components are integrated into a bell assisted by arms called wings or levers. Most of them are made of metal, but some can be embellished with an ABS plastic bell. Its simplicity of use, but especially its versatility is one of its greatest assets.

Wall mounted corkscrew

The name of this type of corkscrew is very revealing. It is literally fixed to the wall without which you cannot guarantee its good functioning. The device has a wall support and a vertical lever as heavy as solid which acts on the stem provided with spiral worm sharpened by the concave column and the corkscrew. It works in the same way as a lever corkscrew and is effortless to use. To place in a kitchen or a living room, this corkscrew can be a decorative object in its own right.

Verdict

If you are looking for a corkscrew that is easy to handle and carry, the Charles de Gaulle, although not a French invention, is the ideal solution. It requires very little effort to operate it thanks to the lever effect. It is also suitable for lovers of old-fashioned aesthetics, but it remains timeless. On the other hand, the wall-mounted corkscrew will surely impress your guests. It serves as an original decorative object, whether in the kitchen or in a barbecue area. Able to open many bottles in a row, this model will save you a lot of time!

Tips

Open your bottle without a corkscrew

If you don't have a corkscrew, you can use a screw, a screwdriver or pliers to remove the cork. You can also push the cork into the bottle instead of pulling it out. This method is only recommended as a last resort due to the fact that the cork is in direct contact with your wine.

And if the cork crumbles...

The most common cause of poor storage condition, the cork can dry out and crumble. Try adhering the tendril to the cork by reinforcing it. If that doesn't work, use a small knife to cut it along the length. Gently twist it and then pull the cork out with the help of the tendril.

Use a dishtowel if the cork sinks in

The cork can sink if it is too wet. To avoid this, use a clean cloth. Twist it, making sure to insert it into your wine bottle. As soon as it reaches the bottom of the cork, pull it up. If the available space between the neck and the cork is too narrow, a string or a small rope can do the trick.

Catch the blow by saving the broken cork in 2

A fairly common situation, it is recommended to insert the wick on the less dry side of the cork instead. Twist and pull. In case a few pieces still fall into the bottle, lean it over the sink to squirt out the first few drops of nectar.

Heat the neck of your wine bottle to dislodge the cork

You can get rid of the cork by putting the neck of the bottle into boiling water. You'll see that it will come out on its own.
