How to choose your ceiling fan

An integral part of interior design, the ceiling fan is becoming more modern. It invites itself in the living rooms, and brings an appreciable note of freshness during the summer days. Discover some criteria to take into account, to choose your ventilation device.

#1 - The diameter of the fan

The force of air movement and the efficiency of your ceiling fan will depend on the size of the blades. For a room of 9 to 21 m², choose a diameter between 70 and 110 cm. If your room is between 21 and 37 m², you will need to install a larger device, with a diameter between 110 and 145 cm. For very large rooms, it is best to install several fans, keeping a distance of 3 to 4 m between the units.

#2 - The height of the stem

To properly evaluate the height of your fan, remember that the safety height between the floor and the fan blades is at least 2.13 meters. The length of the rod will depend on the height of your ceiling. For a low or normal ceiling, choose a flat or rodless fan. Ceilings higher than 3 meters can be equipped with a fan with an extension rod. If your ceiling is sloped, there are specially adapted models that can be installed on a slope.

#3 - Lighting options

Many models are equipped with LED lighting, a solution that remains very practical for small rooms. The lighting can be turned on independently of the ventilation. The light sources offer a wide range of colors, for an appreciable aesthetic effect.

#4 - The features

The adjustment of the rotation speed: in some models, it is possible to adjust the rotation speed of the blades. This option can be useful in case of high temperatures, or when the room is occupied by many people. Reversible blade rotation: If you want to use your fan all year round, choose a model with a winter mode. When this feature is activated, the blades rotate counter-clockwise, resulting in an even temperature in the room. It should be noted, however, that winter mode limits the removal of moisture. Before using this option, check that your home has a controlled mechanical ventilation system, or CMV.

#5 - The ignition control

A simple form of installation is to install the fan in place of the ceiling light: it is turned on by a switch. Most efficient fans are controlled by a remote control. In the case of high-end models, it is possible to program the operating mode according to time slots. Some units are equipped with an automatic start system, connected to a presence or temperature sensor.

Cleaning a ceiling fan

  • Before working on the fan, turn off the power at the main breaker.
  • Wait for the blades to come to a complete stop before cleaning.
  • Start by checking the fasteners of the backing plate and fixture components. Reinforce the fasteners of all screws and nuts.
  • Gently dust the blades with a microfiber cloth. Avoid the use of aggressive products that could damage the blades' coating. Instead, use a vacuum cleaner to reach hard-to-reach areas.
  • If you are using a ceiling fan, replace old bulbs and clean the light globe with a soft cloth.

Lubricating a ceiling fan

  • Start by looking at the top of the motor, near the bottom shaft, to determine where the oil hole is located.
  • Pour enough WD-40 oil into the hole to rid the bearings of dust and dirt.
  • Wait one to two minutes to give the WD-40 time to dry and evaporate properly.
  • Fill the oil tank with 30 to 60 cc of oil.
  • Rotate the rotor by twisting or gently pushing one of the blades. Let the paddles take several turns.
  • Fill the tank completely with WD-40. Make sure the oil does not spill over the motor.
  • Wipe off the excess oil with a dry cloth.

Some tips for optimal ceiling fan efficiency

  • Set your ceiling fan to run counter-clockwise when it is extremely hot. This way, cool air will be pushed down.
  • Always remember to turn off your ceiling fan when you leave the room.
  • Turn on your bathroom and kitchen fans whenever you feel the air is humid.

Steps to balancing a ceiling fan

  • Start the unit.
  • Increase the speed without skipping a beat to determine how much the fan oscillates.
  • Purchase a blade balancing kit from a hardware store or home improvement center. In this kit, you will find a blade clip and several adhesive weights.
  • Place a clip on one of the blades of the ceiling fan, making sure to position it near the center of the unit.
  • Turn on the fan.
  • See if there is less oscillation.
  • Repeat the above steps until stability is achieved.

The different types of ceiling fans

Ceiling fans come in many different types. Let's review them.

Standard ceiling fans

A standard ceiling fan is a versatile addition to your home. It is available in a variety of styles to fit any decor. Typically, standard ceiling fans have five blades and often have a built-in lighting feature. On some models, the lights can be customized to fit both the decor and functionality of your living space. You'll also find that they come with a variety of great accessories: remote control, different lighting kits, customizable blades, etc.

Low ceiling fan

Also known as hugger ceiling fans or recessed ceiling fans, low profile ceiling fans are attached to a mounting bracket. This makes them different from standard ceiling fans, which are usually mounted on a suspension rod. A low profile ceiling fan works best if the ceiling in the rooms of your home is no more than 8 feet high. Instead of using a suspension rod, the recessed fan, as the name suggests, is installed directly on the mounting bracket. This keeps the unit at about 2.1 meters from the ground. This way, without the clearance between the ceiling and the blades, the air movement is not as great as with a standard ceiling fan. But it can still be enough to help you run your HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system more efficiently.

Multi-motor ceiling fans

This type of fan offers a central housing with multiple rods (2, 3 or a bit more), each with its own adjustable fan. This fan is a great choice for people who value aesthetics. Multi-motor ceiling fans can be set so that each blade has its own speed. They are usually installed in a large room or public area because of their excellent ability to circulate air over larger areas than a standard ceiling fan.

Ceiling fans for outdoor use

An outdoor ceiling fan is your best bet for outdoor use. This type of equipment has an ultra-humidity-resistant motor. It's equipped with all-weather blades that are extremely robust against warping. When it comes to the best location for an outdoor ceiling fan, look for areas that don't receive a lot of direct rainfall. These include covered porches, covered patios or sunrooms. In short, outdoor ceiling fans are designed to be used in more industrial conditions that expose them to the elements. In fact, they can withstand rain and snow and are good options for outdoor spaces near the beach, for example.

Industrial or commercial ceiling fans

Industrial ceiling fans are primarily intended for cooling very large areas. Their motor is ultra-powerful, so they are perfect for providing considerable airflow to cover a spacious area. Industrial ceiling fans are best installed in warehouses, gyms and other large spaces. They can sometimes be reversed to raise the air to the exhaust fans to prevent condensation on the ceiling.

Ceiling fan or air conditioner?

Ceiling fan

The ceiling fan is a device (with or without blades) that adapts very well to the whims of the seasons to provide the occupants of a house all the thermal comfort they need. During hot weather, the unit can be combined with an air conditioner to bring a cooler feeling to a room and will help lower the set temperature of your air conditioner. During the winter season, the ceiling fan can be combined with your heating system (preferably wood burning) to even out the temperature in the room. This system will allow you to considerably reduce your consumption. In addition, the "winter" mode of the ceiling fan is a very interesting and useful option in winter.

The bladeless ceiling fan draws in the air directly from below and then diffuses it from the sides in all directions. The air is circulated throughout the room, creating a pleasant breeze effect. The absence of friction between the blades and the air makes this model extremely quiet. Economical, this type of fan is both affordable and consumes less energy than the bladed version, and can be equipped with an adjustable LED lighting system. As for noise, like most fans, the ceiling fan is quiet (no more than 65 dB) compared to an air conditioner. However, there are some fans that are quieter than others.

In addition, you can install your own ceiling fan and the fact that it can be used as a light fixture is also a big plus. Not to mention the fact that it can be used as a decorative object in its own right. As for the industrial models, they are capable of cooling spacious areas such as the interior of an open office or a large hangar.

Air conditioner

The air conditioner is an equipment that allows you to enjoy a light breeze when it is very hot by literally renewing the air in the room. After sucking out the hot air, it replaces it with fresh air. However, it requires a waiting time of 24 hours after purchase before it can be started, because the refrigerant gas needs to stabilize. In the case of a mobile air conditioner, an opening to the outside is imperative in order to pass the exhaust hose.

As for the fixed model, the installation imperatively requires the services of a professional. This is very costly when combined with the price of the unit. In all, plan on a budget of between 2000 and 3000 euros for the purchase and installation of an air conditioner. High-performance models such as Dyson air conditioners are very expensive.

Whether it is a mobile air conditioner(monobloc, split, without evacuation) or a fixed air conditioner (wall-mounted), this type of device is generally noisy with an average sound level of 50 to 75 dB. Although there are models of silent air conditioners, they are not the same as ceiling fans.

Verdict

In conclusion, the ceiling fan far outweighs the air conditioner. It is therefore better to invest in a ceiling fan, especially if you have a limited budget. With a hundred euros, you can get a high-end model that acts as both a light and a fan. And you can also install it yourself unlike an air conditioner. On the other hand, if you already have an air conditioner at home, there is nothing to stop you from investing in both pieces of equipment if your budget allows it, in order to enjoy optimal thermal comfort in all seasons. In combination with the air conditioner, the ceiling fan brings up the warm air in summer, and conversely, in winter, it brings it down.

Why buy a ceiling fan?

Energy efficiency

They can significantly reduce energy costs. Ceiling fans can help create a draft, which makes the room cooler and allows you to turn up the thermostat. The most powerful ceiling fans consume 50 to 75 W and typically 20 to 30 W at reduced power. They are energy efficient compared to a room air conditioner with a minimum of 1000W of power consumption, making it 30 to 50 times more energy efficient on your bill.

Style and beauty

These fans are also available in a wide variety of sizes and styles, with finishes that complement your unique interior style. Choose from traditional models with finishes ranging from wood to bronze, modern brushed metal units, or even tropical fans with banana leaf-like blades.

Strong focal point

Combine several striking ceiling fans in an open-concept main room to create a welcoming, comforting space. Some models have innovative canopy systems that can be installed over vaulted ceilings, making them an ideal choice for the great room in your luxury home.

Versatility for different rooms

Perfect for a large master bathroom, other compact ceiling fan models can wick away moisture. A smaller fan adds the perfect touch to a child's room or a family room in the basement. An industrial-inspired fan can work well in a home gym, helping you cool down during workouts.

Functional illumination

Ceiling fans with lighting allow you to contribute to the layered lighting design of your room. Many ceiling fans also include dimming features, ideal for reading in bed at night. Consider choosing a lighting kit that coordinates with fixtures and appliances in other areas of your home.

The best brands of ceiling fans

In our opinion, the best brands of ceiling fans in 2022 are :

Mellerware
Westinghouse
Hykiss
Eglo
Faro

It is an online brand whose key words are quality and transparency. Indeed, it offers quality devices and an innovative design at honest prices. And for good reason, from the supplier to the customer, there is no intermediary who could inflate the cost of the product. Offering better value than traditional stores, Mellerware puts itself in the shoes of its customers to make their shopping experience easy.

Westinghouse is an American firm that has been around for over a century. The fans designed by this prestigious brand have a reputation for being convenient to use and ultra efficient. And for good reason, they are able to cool large areas thanks to their great ventilation power and their tiltable design. Not to mention the fact that these units can be controlled remotely via a remote control, and have optimal lighting.

HYKISS is a company that is committed to providing its customers with quality fans and lights, compiled into one product to optimally cool a room while allowing the occupants of the room to enjoy good lighting. Constantly listening to its customers, Eglo improves its products accordingly and sells them at an excellent value.

For over half a century, the Eglo brand has been part of one of the leading international manufacturers of decorative lighting for the home. Standing out from the crowd, Eglo makes high-end ceiling fans. The brand keeps a close eye on the quality of its products: the manufacturing materials are carefully selected, the finishes are meticulous, and performance-wise, its ceiling fans have nothing to be ashamed of in front of its competitors.

This is a Spanish brand that has been able to combine technical strengths and aesthetic requirements in its fans. Too bad their products are not accessible to everyone. Indeed, they are more expensive than most other devices on the market. But in the end, the cost is amply justified by the high quality of Faro fans.

Tips

Preventing ceiling fan oscillation problems

To prevent your ceiling fan from wobbling, make sure that the fan is properly installed and that all blades are screwed into the blade holder. Also, make sure the blade holder is firmly screwed into the fan's flywheel. Next, clean the fan blades with a household cleaner and make sure they are properly aligned. Then turn the fan on.

How to program your ceiling fan according to the season

Program your ceiling fan so that in the summer, its operation is counterclockwise. This will create a downdraft that will generate a direct, cooling breeze. On the other hand, in the winter, reprogram the fan to run clockwise to create an updraft and circulate the warm air in the room.

Adapt the fasteners to the weight of the fan

The weight of a large fan can easily reach a dozen kilos, which requires a solid installation. Because of this, be sure to check the type of mounting for your unit, especially if it is to be mounted on a double ceiling. Other than that, the fan's fasteners can loosen as the unit operates, so remember to periodically tighten the fastening screws and nuts.

Addition of a ceiling fan extension rod

You can add a "post" or drop rod to your ceiling fan if needed. These drop rods are available at hardware stores in various lengths (18, 24 and up to 36 inches) and in various finishes, such as brass, white, etc.

Place your ceiling fan at the ideal height

The blades of your fan should be at least 18 inches from the nearest walls. Fans should never be suspended less than 213 cm from the floor. If your room is less than 243 cm, consider a low profile fan designed to be flush with the ceiling.

FAQ

Do I need to lubricate my ceiling fan?

Like any machine with moving parts, ceiling fans need proper lubrication to function properly. Some newer fan models are self-lubricating and don't need much maintenance on your part, while others require fresh oil to be added every year. If you live in an older or dusty building, your fans will probably need to be lubricated every year.

How often should I clean my fan?

It is important that you clean your ceiling fan at least once a month. This will help prevent dust and dirt from accumulating on the blades as much as possible. Also, since the unit is quite flashy, the dirt and grime that sticks to it makes it visually unattractive.

What is the best location for my ceiling fan?

Once you've determined that your fan is the right size for your space, placement is the key to its effectiveness. If you're not sure where or how high to hang the fan, place it as close to the center of the room as possible. If you have an irregular space such as an L-shaped room, consider mentally dividing the room and hanging two fans sized for each space. All that's left is to place the unit at the ideal height.

My ceiling fan is oscillating. What can I do to solve the problem?

Start by carefully cleaning the blades of your fan. Once this is done, turn the unit on. If the problem no longer occurs, it means that the malfunction was caused by dirt that got lodged in the mechanism of the unit. If the problem persists, purchase a blade balancing kit from a hardware store or home improvement center. This kit contains blade clips and several adhesive weights to helpbalance the blades of your fan.
