How to choose your blender

In order to take advantage of your future blender and not have to spend money on features that will not serve you, here are the criteria to take into account before buying this type of device.

#1 - The capacity

If you're only going to make small batches, a 200 mL to 1 L blender will do the trick. However, if you have a large family and plan to use your blender daily, look for a blender with more than a 1.5L bowl. For smoothies on the go, choose a "ready-to-go" blender that is compact and convenient since its bowl also doubles as a water bottle.

#2 - The power and speed of the motor

The more powerful the appliance, the faster and more efficient the blending will be, but the electricity consumption will increase at the same time. If your ingredients are soft and of small quantity, opt for the blenders of entry of range of 250 W but if the preparation is denser, choose a blender which has a minimum power of 500 W. Finally, if you want fast and efficient blending on harder ingredients, turn to a power blender with a power of up to 1,500 W, at a rotation speed of 37,000 rpm. By the way, most blenders come with variable speed drives to match the blending intensity with the recipe.

#3 - The type of bowl

The material of its bowl also plays an important role in the quality of the blender. If you want a light and manageable material, opt for plastic but be aware that it scratches easily during use. Tritan, on the other hand, is a BPA-free thermoplastic that is resistant to thermal shock. Glass is more resistant to thermal shocks and scratches, but be careful not to drop it. Stainless steel has a high thermal and mechanical resistance but it is not transparent. Therefore, it will not allow you to observe the state of your preparations.

#4 - The convenience

If your work surface is slippery, make sure the blender has non-slip feet or suction cups under its base. The non-slip handle also offers a better grip on the bowl. Some brands even offer grout filters, a cord storage and various interchangeable blades as needed (serrated blades or dual-purpose blades). Also make sure that the blades of your blender are removable and dishwasher safe components.

A blender with a graduated bowl will also allow you to properly measure out your ingredients. Some bowls have a pouring spout and notches that limit the vortex effect and send the liquid directly back to the blades for a smooth blend. The length of the cable should also be taken into account in case your power source is quite far away.

#5 - The features

If you want to prepare soups or velvets from time to time, thesteam option would be preferred but to make smoothies or cocktails, you should turn to thecrushed ice option. Some blenders even have preset programs, a fast blending option, a timer, a manual mode, an automatic cleaning option or a keep warm function. Your choice will depend on how you will use it.

How to make delicious smoothies with a blender

  • For a smoothie.

Add small amounts of water, milk or juice. Turn your machine on to its highest speed and blend for 10-20 seconds.

  • For a thicker smoothie.

Use or add frozen fruit (especially bananas), add ice or frozen yogurt. Turn your machine on to its highest speed and let it run for 20-30 seconds.

  • For a less bitter smoothie.

Pineapple and oranges add a lot of fruity sweetness. Bananas, in addition to being sweet, seem to neutralize the bitter flavors. Strawberries are also good choices for sweetening the taste of green smoothies. Also try adding a little vanilla bean or vanilla extract.

  • For a really sweet smoothie.

Add honey, agave syrup, maple syrup, stevia, dates, raisins or a little sugar. Using watermelon instead of water will sweeten a smoothie. Turn your machine on to its highest speed and let it run for 10 to 20 seconds.

  • For a creamy smoothie.

Avocado is ideal for adding creaminess to smoothies. Its mild flavour conceals its rich nutritional content. After removing the skin and pit, you can add a whole avocado to your smoothie. Alternatively, add ice cream, frozen yogurt or vanilla yogurt for extra creaminess. Turn your machine on to its highest speed and wait 10-20 seconds.

Important

Never get the motor block, power cord or blender plug wet. When the bowl is on the motor block, never put your hands or any utensils other than the blender inside.

The different types of blenders

Depending on the preparations (soups, cake batter, smoothies, etc.) and the power of the device, there are different types of blenders, namely the blender, the power blender, the vacuum blender, the heated blender and the mini blender.

The blender

A blender is a standard blender that is nothing more than a food processor with a bowl whose motor turns the blades sharpened at its base. This type of blender is of limited power and is ideal for making smoothies, coulis or sauce quickly and in quantity. However, it lacks sturdiness compared to other types of blenders and its maintenance is rather difficult due to the fact that its components are not all removable. However, it is important to note that this type of blender can prepare soups very well when you put cooked vegetables in it. You just have to make sure that you can put hot food in it.

The power blender

The power blender is a powerful device capable of blending hard ingredients like nuts, frozen fruits or ice cubes thanks to its tritan bowl. It usually consumes 1200W of energy but other power blenders offer higher power combined with a higher rotation speed capable of heating up the mixture when preparing sauces, soups or broths. This type of blender is also the most robust of all and therefore rarely breaks down. Finally, thanks to its versatility, it can be used to prepare a variety of recipes in large quantities for a large family.

The vacuum blender

The vacuum blender works by sucking the air out of the blending bowl before blending the ingredients. This preserves the nature of the vitamins, color and taste of the food because the air, rotating with the ingredients, tends to denature the mixture. Thus, your preparation will be healthy and ultra rich in nutrients. Indeed, the possibility of vacuuming before blending the ingredients gives them an incomparable texture.

The heated blender or soupmaker

The soupmaker has the particularity of having a double function since it is able to heat and cook the ingredients before blending the mixture in its tank. This allows to obtain at the end, a ground soup, a smooth soup or compote. Some models can even prepare steamed vegetables or baby food. Besides soups and other hot preparations, the soupmaker can also prepare smoothies, both hot and cold. Most of the heated blenders are equipped with a "keep warm" function. This allows you to enjoy your preparations always hot. Note however that a heated blender is less robust than a power blender.

The mini portable blender

As its name suggests, it is a miniature blender that can accompany us without hindrance in our travels and is equipped with a rechargeable lithium battery. It is very practical for concocting small quantities of preparations such as a smoothie for one person, a small salad dressing, etc. However, it is not as powerful as other types of blenders and the ingredients must be cut up before being put into it. It is also not suitable for intensive use as its motor may overheat.

Blender or juicer?

Blender

With a blender, all the nutritional values of the food, including the fiber, will be preserved. Thus, the chewing stage which is necessary to start the activity of our digestive system (production of digestive juices, stirring of the stomach, etc.) will be favored. Depending on the type of blender, it is capable of making ice cream, sorbets, flour, vegetable purees, cake batter, etc., but not juice.

Juice extractor

The juice extractor is a machine that extracts the essence of fruits and vegetables to make juice. It then removes the fibers that are not well assimilated by the body. Some juicers like Kuvings or Green Star Elite can make ice cream or sorbet at the same time, but you will need to invest in an extra kit. The absence of fiber in drinks prepared with a juicer facilitates the digestion and assimilation of vitamins by the body.

Verdict

In conclusion, both juicers and blenders allow you to prepare nutrient-rich and vitamin-rich foods. However, the choice between the two will depend on your profile. If you have a sensitive stomach, pay attention to your fiber intake, while if you have problems with your intestinal flora, prioritize fiber-rich foods.

The advantages and importance of a blender in the kitchen

Facilitates the extraction of juice

The first and most common use of a blender is to make fruit juice. All you have to do is cut up the fruit you like and put it in the blender. Give them a good mix and your juice is ready.

Vegetable Cocktail

In our busy lives, it's not always possible to have a plate full of traditional salad every day. But don't worry. Blenders are here for you. You can chop up all your favorite vegetables and blend them all together. This way, you can get all the nutrition of the vegetables in one go. It will also save you a lot of time.

Maintain the nutritional intake

Using a blender to juice instead of a juicer has additional benefits. The juicer extracts the juice from the fruit, leaving all the pulp behind. This way, you simply waste all the fiber and calcium present in the fruit. On the other hand, if you use a blender instead of a juicer, you can have the whole fruit without wasting any fiber. This will keep all the nutrition of the food well balanced.

A time saver

The blender is, literally, the fastest kitchen tool around. All you have to do is press the button. It can help you make juice, salad and smoothies in much less time than any manual procedure.

Keep the sugar level down

The blender helps to balance the sugar level in our blood. Since it does not waste the fiber of the ingredient, the sugar is also well balanced in the drinks prepared in the blender. This helps to maintain your sugar level properly.

Tips

Make sure your blender is clean after each use

The best thing to do is to clean the blender after each use to prevent the dirt from drying and sticking to the walls of the machine. Before cleaning the blender, first unplug the machine and then rinse it immediately. Then add hot water to its bowl and pour in a few drops of dishwashing liquid and a tablespoon of white vinegar. Run the machine for 30-40 seconds and finish by rinsing and drying the blender. To clean the outer part, wipe it with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.

How to change the plastic coupling piece on the bottom of the blender bowl

To change the plastic coupling part that drives the blender's propeller, take a large flat screwdriver and insert it between the part to be changed and the metal housing. Gently lift the screwdriver and hold it in this position. Turn the coupling part a quarter turn and repeat three or four times until the part comes off. Clean off any residue and then insert the new part. Screw it in clockwise and make sure that it tightens automatically when it is driven by the motor rotation.

How to maintain a blender

To

extend the life of your blender, some precautions should be taken. To this end, do not keep it in a humid place or near a heat source. Also, avoid running the machine too long in "manual" or "pulse" mode.

How to change the blender belt

Unplug

your machine and disassemble all its accessories. After that, unscrew all the screws that are attached to the base of the machine. After exposing the base and the belt, also unscrew the screw from the bracket without removing the screw off. Then take the defective belt. Take it to an appliance parts store to get a new one. All you have to do is install the new part.

How to unblock a stuck base

The

easiest solution is to put it back on the blender and then unscrew it counterclockwise. If the problem persists, place the stuck base in a solution of cold water and ice for a few minutes before maneuvering with two people. One person holds the base and another tries to unscrew.

FAQ

What is the best blender?

The best blender depends on your needs and your budget. Read our buying guide for the best products out there.

The propeller of my blender doesn't turn anymore, what can I do?

If

the propeller of your blender doesn't turn while you hear the motor noise, the malfunction is probably caused by the plastic part underneath the bowl that serves as a coupling to drive the blades. The defective part must be replaced. This will cost you about ten euros.

How to get rid of stubborn particles stuck to the walls of the blender?

If

you forgot to rinse your machine after use, the particles can dry and stick to the walls of the bowl. In this case, pour a solution of hot water, a few drops of washing-up liquid and a tablespoon of white vinegar into the bowl. Leave the mixture to act for a few hours or overnight, depending on the tenacity of the particles. Then empty the bowl and pour in the same solution, rinsing after shaking. If some dirt persists, use a brush that is sometimes supplied with the appliance.

My blender seems to slow down, why?

If

your blender doesn't spin properly, rotates discontinuously, or runs intermittently, it's likely that its belt is defective or that the inside of the motor is contaminated with dirt
